Apples to Orgasms
An odd tidbit from our British friends across the pond:
A National Health Service leaflet is advising school pupils that they have a "right" to an enjoyable sex life and that regular intercourse can be good for their cardiovascular health.
The advice appears in guidance circulated to parents, teachers and youth workers, and is intended to update sex education by telling pupils about the benefits of sexual pleasure. For too long, say its authors, experts have concentrated on the need for “safe sex” and loving relationships while ignoring the main reason that many people have sex, that is, for enjoyment.
The document, called Pleasure, has been drawn up by NHS Sheffield, although it is also being circulated outside the city.
Alongside the slogan "an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away", it says: "Health promotion experts advocate five portions of fruit and veg a day and 30 minutes’ physical activity three times a week. What about sex or masturbation twice a week?"
Very interesting. But could such a sexually enlightened controversial program ever work here in the United States?

But could such a sexually enlightened controversial program ever work here in the United States?
You know the answer: the Christianists, other fundies and conservative men will never allow it. No word on whether wireless providers will allow sexting content/bandwidth blocking by parents.
Best,
D
You know if we make it a
You know if we make it a 'right' we can get it added into the 'Public Option' of the national health insurance bill.
Heck just slip it into the 1,000 page bill, no one's going to read it anyway.
it will happen
This type of sex ed, will eventually get to the conservative american shores, it will just take a bit of time, as conservative religious groups do move forward and have to move forward, they just take a bit longer to catch up.
Some christians still believe the earth is 6000 years old..etc..but not for much longer, the scientific method and the truth it uncovers are undeniable be it in sex ed or geology.
Dumb idea
What a stupid idea. Teenagers still need time to mature, in the developed world. They know little of the responsibilty that comes with having sex. They've only recently quit playing with toys. Livespan increases and the current requirements of adulthood (and parenthood!!!!!) leaves plenty of time for the kiddies to be getting thier freak on a little further down the line. What do they know about the responsiblity of sexual relationships? NTM: the possible outcome. What they should be taught is masturbation. Ya, sex is great fun but they should be taught how to pleasure themselves until they are old enough to handle adult relationships and possible parenthood. And, this is especially good for girls since let's face it...teenage boys ARE in it for the fun/score. A girl should learn that she can take care of herself without relying on a teenage youth who has no interest in her future, may be only out to get laid, and might do damage to her self-esteem and future relatioinships. Dare I say, I'm not surprised this was written by a male. Nix on teenage sex. Yay for teenagers mastering the art of masturbation.
You make a great point.
You make a great point.
M***ur**tion?
"What they should be taught is masturbation" ????
Really now! That's like Breathing 101, at least for boys. Don't fetal males touch themselves in utero? By the time puberty strikes, there is a clearly beaten (sic) path between the palm and the p*en*s that needs no further instruction, at least for the 98% of males who confess to doing the deed.
That includes all descendants of the Abrahamic religions, the Wiccans, the Brahmins and the Untouchables, the Shitoists, and the godless, atheistic naturalistic Humanists. And the navel-gazing guru-hermits living atop the highest peaks of the Himalayas. You get the idea. Wankers all until something better comes (sic) along.
I am told that little girls don't transition as seamlessly into adult masturbators. So maybe Masturbation 101 should be subsumed by Girl's PE, but I wouldn't try it in one of the Red States. Until that happens, let's pray something better comes along for them too.
P.S. Think Bristol and Levi ... paraphrasing Sen. McCain, "Erections have consequences"!
Thumbs ups for the NHS
"But could such a sexually enlightened controversial program ever work here in the United States?"
Not if the twisted Bible Thumpers (guardians of our morals, LOL) stick their noses in this matter and of course, they will.
There is no doubt that sex
There is no doubt that sex is indeed fun. What concerns me is the apparent emphasis on fun without any corresponding emphasis on responsibility. Driving a car is fun too but we have age limits to prevent immaturity behind the wheel. I love to smoke cigars, I think it is fun and it is engaged in purely for fun, but I would be remiss to offer a smoke to school pupils.
If we are going to enlighten then I recommend shining the light on the entire subject. The pursuit of sexual pleasure without the corresponding side called responsibility is to fail our school pupils by withholding vital and important information.
An orgasm a day!
We, unfortunatelly, are puritans and this program would never work! Our arteries are not as important as our morals...Oh! God! How naive you made us! Marx said "it is the opium of the ignorant and poor! Have we all become so dumb?
I think it is a great idea!
Mainly because the good ol Christians will die earlier due to less sex , especially since we are telling them more is better. They already do not have any until married, right? If we could only get them to post phone marriage too. But I digress.
In addition their blood pressure will go even higher knowing that others are having fun and they now have another issue to hate and rant about.
Other than that, it only confirms what most of us knew in the first place. Sex improves lives.
Gonna get healthier tonight!
Religion is not the main issue here
"But could such a sexually enlightened controversial program ever work here in the United States?"
A great conversation for a debate.
I feel the stereotyping of religious and other groups and the expectation of certain behaviors and characteristics is prejudiced. Wikipedia seems to agree http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prejudice. This prejudiced mindset towards religion exists, and unlike racism and feminism has not been thrust into the public sphere for examination. I don't believe that we have yet eradicated the isms that are out there, but we are working on it.
I feel that being religious does not necessarily mean that someone would oppose this type of program. An example of a religious group that would oppose it could likely be matched with a group that would argue it's merits. Let's look at the issue and its pros and cons instead of assuming what groups would decide. Remember in-school when there were in class debates? You didn't always get the side you agreed with...
Since you may be wondering-
I am a very spiritual person who also is very progressive in my beliefs and actions.
Personally, I would want to know more about the program before thinking about whether it would work or not. The information provided is not sufficient for me as a former teacher/ administrator to judge it's eligibility for the classroom. I also think it is possible that there are schools in the US that are already doing something like this, but that it would take more research than I am willing to do to find out.
Kirsten- What a beautiful
Kirsten-
What a beautiful point and I couldn't agree more. Yes, there are religious nuts out there who would condemn taking a life, yet shoot an abortion doctor and feel no regret. Unfortunately, religion (like politics) is in the hands of humanity, which is imperfect and downright beastly at times. But they are a minority, much like Muslim extremists do not necessarily represent Islamic values.
But I fear that these handful of 'Jesus jumpers' are making people shy away from their spirituality. I know many people in my own humble community who attend church regularly and are beautiful and giving people. They do not condemn those who believe differently from them. They do not spew hate from the pulpit every Sunday morning. What they do might not seem like all that much to the untrained eye, but they do it in the face of great ridicule because of the popular myth that if you attend church, you must hate Mexicans and gays and abortion. Nothing could be further from the truth.
My progressive friends, PLEASE direct your flexible and open minds to the individuals who believe that there are forces at work which are greater than we are able to comprehend. I profess myself to be one of them. I fight for the environment, I believe in abortion so much that I've had one myself, I pray every chance I get, I go to church almost every Sunday, I have total faith in science over creationism, and I do not feel conflicted or hypocritical about any of it.
Certainly teens should be
Certainly teens should be taught the advantageous pleasures of sex, mainly masturbation. That is the safest sex for adolescents. You're right that religion has stood in the way of sex education of any kind. I used to be a Christian, but I've totally rejected that belief system, and their negative attitude toward sex is one main reason. There is good sex education in Europe, and they have only a small fraction of the teen pregnancy there is in this country. I am now a happy old agnostic, and I long for the day when religion no longer has any influence in this country.
sex a fun to health.
no doubt sex is the best reliver of tensions, assist in gaining happymood, works as safe
tranqualiser,so it is the best idea of daily sex, accordingly would suggest for making
provision of sex rooms in offices, schools, universities, businesses, railway stations, airports parks,
as we have rest rooms, retiring rooms in many public places.
Irresponsible not immoral
I am with te writer of "Dumb Idea". While I am not opposed to the health benefits of healthy sex being taught in sex ed classes, we must keep in mind that it is well documented that the teenage brain and mindset, no matter how mature the individual may seem, do not correspond to that of their 20+ adult counterparts. Teenagers are impulsive, emotion driven, live very much in the moment, and do not have the same record on rational decision making as slightly older young adults. Therefore, it seems to me that Britain's new addition to the sex ed curriculum is irresponsible and could encourage teenagers to make decisions that could end up being emotiannaly and psychologically damaging. I am only recently out of my teen years so I still have a fairly recent understanding of the teen mind. This is not about what is moral, it is about what it age and developmentally appropriate. Please stop looking at this through a lens of hate directed at religion, and look at it through the lens of child and adolescent development.
just do it
No need to pass a bill to make it legal. Just do it. On the internet, tell everybody you know: just do it. Then everyone will find out about it. Those who wish to will do it.
Progressivism, Spirituality and Diversity of Beauty
Functionally I am in the space that dialectical materialism makes a lot of sense to me, but am married to a Christian progressive. We have conversations like this all the time, and I truly do hope progressive factions gain more of a hold in spiritual organizations, so that religion comes to be something other than what Marx described of it. By the way, what I read from Marx's "heart of a heartless world" is that he saw religion dominated by corollaries to oppression. What that means to me is that communists should see outlawing religion as a waste of time and unnecessary, because if they do their job right the worst aspects of religion would fail to maintain a hold on anyone. The only stumbling block to this is that I wonder how people can be pro-democracy for Earth while being celestial monarchists.
One way that I would hope the NHS would extend this idea is to teach children about diversity of beauty. This is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to enjoyable sex especially for youth, who are all too often and all too soon entrained in the various fascisms of appearance-ranking. One has to feel sexy, to see oneself as deserving of healthy sex, to have any appreciable probability of effectively learning with whom one is likely to negotiate a beautiful intercourse.
