It appears that if you are rich enough, it is possible to buy a guilt free conscience and keep producing the same amount of CO2. Is this really equal?

One thing that most people don't realize when they attack and demonize SUVs and condemn them to the junk pile is that tne majority of the SUVs are built on a pickup truck fame and motor. Should all pickups be banned also?

This seems like a "pyrimid scam" to me. There are questions that come to mind,
Do all the passengers on a plane get to claim the offset?
Why is there no standard set for these offsets?
How do I set myself up to receive money from these people willing to pay for my emissions of CO2?
My swimming pool emits CO2, do I count this in my offset needs?
It's a scam for the rich.

What happen to the energy consumption when you lower the thermostat in Florida?
First on the agenda is to get rid of the SUV garbage truck for commuting to work and shopping.Don't pay for ways to improve fuel economy in SUVs and Trucks. We already have commuter cars available that will, without the environmentally devastating battery production, that will do better than 50 miles to the US gallon/0.5 l/100km. Don't forget that Ethanol, Methane and so on, all produces CO2. The most effective solution and available right now is to reduce the consumtion.

Depending on individual guilt and a readiness to reach for the plastic is not going to make a real difference. Perhaps the ticket price of all flights should have a carbon offset fee built in with the funds going toward well planned and regulated projects certified as bona fide.

Carbon offsets should not be a "last resort" for reducing your carbon footprint. Those funds are doing more than keeping greenhouse gasses out of the air; they are paying for the construction of renewable energy power plants, evolving the technology, making it easier to implement, making it more efficient. They also offset the operating costs so a wind turbine can produce electricity at the same cost as a traditional power plant. Without that subsidy, we might have to rely on market forces to drive renewable energy into the mainstream--probably too late for the damage to be undone.
