Let us not forget that Dr. Stiglitz points out that oil futures were $25/bbl for 10 years going forward before the invasion of Iraq.

Record gas prices, record profits for Exxon, all our top level administration figures associated with the oil 'bidness', a coincidence, right?

- I'm more than dissapointed that Bush didn't do his homework and think occupation of Iraq & its consequences through thoroughly. He took direction from highly influential, moneyed Jewish think tanks, like the Washington Institute, hegemonic neo-cons & right wing Christians. What plans/advice did these provocateurs supply him with as they pushed? The administration/its provacateurs imagined that any U.S. presence in Iraq would benefit Israel. Just shaking up the "ad-mix" without understanding is "sinful", unethical- 100's of thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths later. (and those on the Christian Right dare to speak of a right to life!)
The administration's focus should have been on the United States! We need to put our oxygen mask on first before we assist our "child"/Israel. Our infrastructure is rotting. Iran “reflexed” right back to pre-moderate times as a result of our occupation of Iraq. Revolution could have and should come from within. I resent the huge portion of the Jewish vote now going to Senator Mc Cain forever speaking with a grinning Jo leiberman standing behind him prodding him to bomb Iran to help Israel. The American people should say "Never Again."

Koshlan Mayer-Blackwell and Mother Jones have done a splendid service to the American public by this revealing, yet troubling, interview with a brillant economist, Joseph Stiglitz.

How can we get the vast number of Americans, especially Republicans, Neocons, and the extreme religous right in this country to understand what George Bush, Cheney, the corporations and the corrupt Mainstream Media are doing devasting damage to our country, our instituitions, our way of life, nearly unalterable damage to the middle class and those who aspire to join the middle class?

Many heartfelt thanks to Mother Jones and brave scholars like Joseph Stiglitz for speaking out.

Bullsht. How can you all ignore the attacks on innocent people throughout the world by Islamic extremists?? You're living in a a fairytale where the good thing happens without sacrifice. You're right, it costs a lot of money. My two daughter's education cost a lot of money too, but it was worth it. Again, my question is, how can you ignore the attacks on people like yourself, for having beliefs that you have.

I am still waiting for impeachment and imprisonment of war criminals, Bush, Cheney, et al. It's all about oil and nothing about freedom for anyone, except profiteers to enrich themselves at the expense of thousands of innocent lives. Time for the people to take back our government from corporate greedy evildoers running it now.

I agree with Stiglitz that a democracy goes to war with the support and participation of all its people. This means that a draft Army is desirable to a volunteer/mercenary (mercenary, the Blackwaters, etc.). Without this degree of commitment we allow leaders like Bush a free hand with the dying down by the poor and less well educated. How many members of his administrative family have sons or daughters in Iraq or Afganistan in the fighting forces. Could this be why there was foot dragging on body armor and well-armored vehicles?

Two answer two of the above questions:
1. War cost to individual taxpayers- about $6600 each, so around $27,000 for a family of four.
2. Who profits? A good website is:
http://www.corpwatch.org/section.php?id=176

I recently heard that just undemocratic, China holds $1 trillion in U.S. Savings Bonds. How much of our total debt and interest on our debt might be related to the immediate and long term costs of the Iraq war?

Thank you so much for this informative interview. While 1 to 2 trillion dollars is a staggering number for the US to pay for the war, my question is: what does that mean to the individual tax payer??? Please put the burden that all of us--individually--will have to bear for this misadventure.
