Range Voting is better than IRV for single-winner elections.

A good way to combat Gerrymandering, though, is to have proportional representation. The STV method (IRV is just STV with a single winner) is pretty good getting proportionality when picking more than one candidate. But newer methods like Reweighted Range Voting and Asset Voting are simpler and better.

Also, Warren Smith's shortest splitline algorithm is a way to draw districts to eliminate Gerrymandering cold.

Check out http://rangevoting.org/

Be careful in supporting Instant Runoff; as I understand it often results in the least unfavored candidate being selected, not most favored. Range voting is a better solution, where voters can rate as many candidates with a rank from 0 to 9, and the candidate with the highest average rating is selected as the representative. The selection error is much lower than with instant runoff. (check out rangevoting.org for more info, I'm shaky on the details)
