They also use plenty of "positive" methods like rewarding students for doing well. They collect copious amounts of data on the children they serve and it a particular procedure is not effective, punishment or reward the procedure is discontinued.

Every single person uses aversive stimulation from time to time. The difference between JRC and the classroom teacher is that they are effective in their use of it.

I'm probably going to be slaughtered for what I'm about to say, but I'll say it anyway because its the truth.

As a former student who was on the GED, I can honestly attest that JRC is not the horror house the media portrays it to be. I can also attest that Dr. Israel is not the psycho people make him out to be. There are several things about JRC that I disagree with. But in all honesty, JRC gave me my life back. Before JRC, I was in and out of all kinds of placements and I was doped up on meds to the point of oblivion. Once I started at JRC and after the GED was implemented, I began living as normal a life as my disability would allow. The placements I was at prior to JRC told my parents that me graduating from high school and living a normal adult life would be nothing short of a miracle. Once I got to JRC, they told me and my parents that graduating from high school isn't a miracle, its a reality. And they were right, I did wind of graduating and with high honors I might add. It took a little longer and a little more effort that it would most people, but in the end I did it.

As far as the program itself is concerned, there are some things that I disagree with, especially when it comes to how the GED is used. However, if the GED were removed, the results would be nothing short of catastrophic. I do believe that JRC treats some behaviors with the GED that are unnecessary and I do believe that the approval process should a little more rigorous that it currently is. I truly don't believe that the GED is for everyone and I truly don't believe that it should be a common option in treating problem behaviors. However, when the alternative is self inflicted death, being warehoused in hospitals or jails, or being doped up on meds to the point where you can't even recognize your own mother, there is a place for the GED.

What really boils me about this article is that the writer exaggerates all the negatives while downplaying the overwhelming positives to the point of next to nonexistence. I can attest to some of the claims made by Rob Santana and I have experienced some of the things Rob has experienced, but unlike Rob, I recognize the true benefits that JRC has to offer and I choose to focus primarily on the good times I had at JRC. The writer of this article is clearly bias and deliberately wrote this article with the intention of angering people and casting negative aspirations about JRC. A good journalist like Ms. Gonnerman could make Disney World seem like a horror show if she really put her mind to it! So to those of you who have already passed harsh judgment or intend to pass harsh judgment, you should consider both sides before doing so. If you have time to read this incredibly long and biased article but don't have the time to give equal consideration to what the supporters of this school have to say, than you don't have the time to pass a fair judgment.

(fair judgment doesn't necessarily mean speaking favorably about JRC, but what it does mean is giving what the supporters have to say equal weight as you would give to what the opponents of this treatment have to say and if you still oppose JRC after doing that, than that's perfectly OK, just so longs you at least made an attempt to be objective.)

I must point out that this article by Jennifer Gonnerman is a one sided hatchet job that gives great emphasis to just about anything negative you can think of about JRC and Matthew Israel and gives zero emphasis on all of the positives that far outweigh all the negatives. Ms. Gonnerman deliberately designed this article so that it would anger the readers. She set the tone of the article right from the first sentence, opening with “Rob Santana awoke terrified.” In response to this unfair article, many people lashed out at the school. The very few parents and former student whom had the courage to come on here and tell their story were quickly greeted with snide remarks and viewed in the least favorable light possible. Early on, a former student had the courage to come on here and tell his story. In return, several people made snide remarks towards him, made fun of him because his spelling wasn’t perfect, and one person even assertively suggested that this former student was really a staff person hired by Matthew Israel to pose as a former student whom benefitted from the treatment. If I were to read this article with no previous knowledge of JRC or Matthew Israel, I would lash out at the school and I would certainly waist no time in lashing out at those who dare say anything positive about JRC or Matthew Israel. In June of 2006, Geraldo Rivera, host of the FOX newscast, Geraldo at Large, did a story on JRC, and although in his closing summation, Mr. Rivera expressed his displeasure for the treatment, he equally presented both sides of the issue, which is what Ms. Gonnerman should have done, but did not. I believe that both Rob Santana and Antwone both deserve a fair amount of attention, however, those who support and benefitted from the treatment deserved equal amount of attention, and that did not happen. Those who so intently oppose this treatment either do not have the ability to have an open mind or have established their unwillingness to have an open mind. I am so heartbroken to think that the country I am so proud to be a part of could allow this type of child abuse. I have a sick family member that had the same type of discipline ideas as this so-called doctor Isreal. She tried similar physically and mentally abusive mindgame/pain sick reward and punishment tactics on me as a child. I am now 38 and she is 91. I am a good grandchild to her, but hate her for her internal demons. I fear she will simply rot in hell for eternity. I want to cry for these helpless and abused children. Parents, please realize what you have done. I never forgave my mother for putting me in my abusive grandmothers care. She is a sick (I can compare her actions to Hitler) and confused individual.
