From the air the tiny islets

From the air the tiny islets of Funafuti atoll appear as a broken pearl necklace scattered on the blue throat of the tropical sea. No other land is in sight, only an ocean without end and its own billowy breath rising as cumulus clouds that seem far more substantive than the tiny landforms below.

Delusional People

I've heard these bizarre arguments a lot lately. Yeah, the oceans aren't rising... the islands are sinking. See, if the water rises, that means that sea level is higher. And if the sea level is higher, then the island can't claim to be at the same sea level as it used to be. Just look at the numbers. If the island used to be 15 feet above sea level and now it's 14.75 feet below sea level, it's clearly the island that's sinking, not the ocean rising, since everything is relative to sea level, yes?

Holy crap. There are grown people who believe this crap, who'll be lashed to a pole when the Outer Banks of North Carolina are under water, still spouting that mankind had nothing to do with it, and that it's not like we could fix any it anyway. Might as well put on your swim trunks and make the most of it. These are the same idiots who were clawing at the door of Noah's Ark as the waters were rising. Some things never change.

I'm sorry but, although I would like to see a future free of oil addiction (due to polution, political extortion and increased terrorism threat caused by it) global warming is not man-made nor may it be countered by our puny actions.

An atoll is formed by the island sinking. This is why the reefs are often so far from the main island core. These reefs mark the base of where the island was. The water may be rising, but some islands are sinking faster than the water rises. Now you don’t need to be an earth scientist to figure these things out. All you need are a couple reliable facts and a huge amount of common sense, logic and ability to put pieces of a puzzle together.

Has anyone ever considered that the island is sinking? All atols are cause by the island sinking. The effect is the reefs distanced from the main island.
