As a member of the lost

As a member of the lost generation who graduated from high school in the late 1970's, I always think of our group as more of the "Dazed and Confused" generation.

I was born in 1962 and never felt like a Bomer or an Xer, so I've been glad that our lost generation finally has a name. But not "cuspers"! Ecch. After all these years of being denied a collective name, the last thing we should get is name that defines us by our neighbors, ie. we should be defined by who we are, not who we aren't.

Moot point, since cuspers has never caught on at all, while Generation Jones has already established itself as very popular with a national following. I'm proud of our generation and of the name that emerged for us: Generation Jones.

Google cuspers and you'll see that virtually nobody uses that term for the generation between the Boomers and Xers. Cuspers was proposed as a name for this generation 10 years ago when Boomers and Xers were the two dominant generations, but it never caught on at all, and anyway, doesn't even make sense at this point, since now people between GenX and GenY, and those born between GenY and GenZ, are called cuspers.

By contrast, google the term Generation Jones, and you'll see that it's gained a big national following...it's gotten a ton of media attention, and many top commentators from numerous top publications and networks (New York Times, Time magazine, NBC, Newsweek, ABC, etc.) are specifically referring to Obama, born in 1961, as part of Generation Jones.

The largest postwar cohort is the 1957 cohort (live births = 4.31 millon), followed by 1959, 1961, 1960 and 1958 (live births = 4.25 million). So Charlie don't surf and Kevin and whoever else was born in 1958 - you are actually part of the 5th largest U.S. population cohort of all time. I was 29 in 1978, and listening to Fleetwood Mac and punk. What stupid bag are you going to try and stuff me into?

I suspect that this stupid conversation only takes place on political websites. On an arts-related website that I participate in, people in their 70's, teenagers, and everyone in between shares ideas and constructive comments. There are arguments, of course, but people aren't taking sides based on the accident of birth year.

'54 is way too early to be on the BB/Gen X cusp. '58 is the earliest edge: if you were 20 in 1978 and listened to Fleetwood Mac or Disco, you're Boomer. If you were into punk, you're cusp.
Blargh. As someone who was 18 in 1978, I have to say that I'd rather be forced to listen to disco than call myself a "cusper". I belong to the Blank Generation, goddamnit!

I was born in 1963, I've never identified with "boomer" culture, I grew up in the 70s. Musically, I identify with punk and new wave (aka "gen X"), not the 60s (although I love 60s era music).

Whether the "cuspers" moniker is good, at least we are recognizing the absurdity of the 20 year "boomer" category.
