Speaker Pelosi and her lieutenants did not meet even once with the House Republicans to discuss the bill, let alone accept any proposals or amendments from them. President Obama, to his credit, did listen to the Republicans before telling them to "suck it in, mate," and accept the Democratic bill without changes.

The Democrats have the power to pass any damn bill they want without any Republican support. So that's what they should just do, and stop all this pretending.

Nationwide support for the Spending Plan has decreased…see http://www.rasmussenreports.com... to less than 42%. Rasmussen has proven one of the best political polsters…so when he talks, I listen. He also shows that Obama's approval ratings are down and Congress as a whole gets around 27% approval rating.

My prediction is that not much will change in Washington DC. Pork barrel politics will continue until we get serious about term limits for representatives and senators.

Obama should pull a Reagan and go directly to the people on national television in prime time and tell them exactly why this stimulus package is so important to the economic revival. Then he should urge them to contact their representatives by email or by phone or fax and simply deluge them with requests to pass this bill. Stop considering working with the GOP! We gave a pretty resounding mandate to Obama and the Democrats to change Washington--let's do it!

Obama should declare the Republican party to be illegal and send them all to GITMO. Problem solved.

carbar must be less than 21 years old, or another one with selective hearing, reading, and seeing disorder. Reagan's tax cut's filled congress's coffers and lowered interest rates for consumers across the board from the Carter administration. Recently, even Bush's tax credits for married people contributed to how many quarters of positive growth before the real estate bubble popped?

My point is: Engage brain before you run your mouth. Now you may interpret my comments as being a Bush supporter. Not so. Bush failed to use the bully pulpit to forewarn the public of the impending doom that was the credit market. Then again, so did the whole Democrat Congress. Selective griping equals revisionist history...

funny I didn't hear GOP ideas other than whining what was in. What were their ideas? Tax cut is not definitive. What taxes and to whom?

No data I've seen in the last 20 yrs ever stimulted the economy with tax cuts, thus the bad bridges, water mainlines etc in our local cities and towns.

All ideas were great but in wrong package.

Obama is slick as a fox. Make GOP whine, trim bill, but what will be remembered? Them being cry babies! LOL

Michael Barrick proclaims: The Republicans are heading for 40 years in the wilderness...

I clearly recall hearing (and even MAKING) such gleeful predictions as this after Agnew and then Nixon both had to resign in disgrace. The Republican party is FINISHED as a political power in American politics for the forseeable future!!
Wonderous insights like that...

What happened was, the Republicans spent maybe two, but certainly no more than FOUR years "in the wilderness"(Dems lost 15 House seats and 3 Senate seats in the '78 mid-terms).

After just four years of Top-To-Bottom Democrat control of federal gov't, a whole lot of life-long Democrats turned into REAGAN Democrats.

It's usually a good idea to wait at least until the eggs have been laid before you start to tally up your chickens.

Hey all you Libs!

It is a TRILLION BUCKS!!

Why can't the Congress (and it's 9% approval rating) take their time to look over the bill?

What happens if GM, Citibank and everyone else that had a prior BAILOUT, comes back a THIRD time?

Pretend, just for a minute, that it is YOUR money.

Jon Stewart came up with a great alternative to funding banks that don't lend...

Jon poses the question, "Why not just hit the RESET button on all of the credit card debt owed to banks by using TARP 'bank loans' to pay citizens to pay their credit card debts." This would eliminate a lot of credit card debt and allow demand to return to many markets. ;)

To George Hanshaw, USA

Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae did NOT create the derivatives market, that is a right wing talking point myth. While they certainly did participate, they actually entered the market two years later than anyone else. They entered the market because so many people were making so much money, they felt it was their responsibility to enter the market to get the rewards for their investors.

It's the deregulation, lack of regulation enforcement and trickle down economics that the Republicans forced upon our economy that has caused the problem. In fact, it has been shown that the Bush tax cuts are the most responsible for the soaring US debt.

re: don burton

Really?!? NAFTA is our problem? Explain to me how decreasing the amount of tax charged by three governments on items imported and exported causes problems, unless you consider more choices and lower prices for consumers, or more markets for American goods and services, problems.

1. There was a bipartisan vote against the bill so spare us the BS of this post.

2. Putting the bill together without R input for alternatives/amendments at outset is not bipartisan.

3. Ending the fairness rule that gives the minority party at chance to give substantive input into new legislation is not bipartisan.

4. How can you be so blind at the lack of bipartisanship on the behalf of Congressional Dems? Do you have ANY sense of objectivity?

5. Reiterate that there was a bipartisan vote against the bill.

6. Do have ANY shame or principles? Mother Jones should have been humiliated by the lying and small mindedness or ignorance of this bill and calling their D leaders to say stop making fools of us all:

     a. $335,000,000 for STD prevention -- does this stimulate the economy or is this an insult to include in a "stimulus" package?

     b. Milions for the arts.

     c. Billions to state govs who have not been managing their budgets.

     d. it goes on and on--perhaps 10% of this relates to stimulus....

So this bill is a farce, a lie and if I was a D I'd be ashamed calling leaders telling them to focus on stimulus instead of a dream come true liberal social engineering spending bill of grand proportions. If MOther Jones wants to do that type of spending--then introduce it in a bill--separately. It's called integrity.

SOARING APPROVAL RATINGS--NOT! 65% is not soaring. The extremist D leadership who lies straight into America's face and says billions for contraception or ACORN stimulates the economy is bringing down the Bama's ratings fast.

No wonder Mother Jones is small time--no objectivity to call it like it is--just liberal spin that most thinking Americans can see through. Please MJ, spare us the bullcrap and quit insulting us w/ spin--give us some journalism, not PR or kool aid. Demand more from your lefties on the hill--especially bipartisanship that walked--not talked out of I can 't feel my face Pelosi's mouth. Oh yeah, she didn't come here to be bipartisan according to her Hill interview yesterday.

That's fine--it's not her job to be bipartisan. Yet she spoke in the previous year that Congress needed to be bipartisan? She was lying the whole time and now her true colors are out there. Why wasn't she just honest in the 1st place? No integrity. Hypocrisy.

Anyway, MJ, surely you can give us a better piece next time without making a fool or yourself.

j

If the Republicans won't play, Obama should take his ball and go home. At least now he can pursue prosecutions of crimes committed by the previous administration without worrying about losing bipartisan support.
