...in the Media-Government Complex.

Every bit as worrisome and threatening to a free country as the Military-Industrial Complex Eisenhower had the foresight to warn us about decades ago.

Look Back Farther - the News is just part of the bigger picture.

It makes me weary to see, day after day, our so-called journalism portraying the fiscal failure of newspapers as caused by "economic woes" or "internet competition." Those and other excuses have a part in the sad decline of newspapers, but the most obvious cause is the one not mentioned. Like most of America's producers of real things, our leading media outlets were looted. They were bought and sold like any other commodity and the media traffickers stripped them bare to gain short-term profit and to "leverage" their next targets. They dumped real journalism, especially foreign coverage and investigative reporting, and they substituted cheaper stuff like celebrity gossip. In the years that this was developing, the media companies, including the now-bankrupt newspapers, were showing profits in the 7-12% range. Now they are broke. Obviously there is more involved here than "cost-cutting" necessity for "cash-strapped" media. Print newspapers are leading the way, but all news media are full of the rot. Cable news is profitable, but it has the same dearth of news content. It's what happened to the housing and banking sectors. They were exposed only after they crashed. That won't happen to the media, though, because nobody is left to report the story.

Culture

The offer was so fundamentally corrupt, and so openly proposed, that it suggests a Post subsumed by the corruption and hubris it is supposed to be exposing. More clearly than a series of articles about how our government's "pay-to-play" and insider benefit system works, this both shows Washington at its worst, and demonstrates that the Post is unfit to cover it.
