A woman seven months pregnant had piss poured on her from a plastic milk jug as she left for work one morning. That's all it took to be an enemy of the squatters -- you didn't have to be rich or interested in gentrifying the area-- you just went to work every day and did your best to feed your family.</p> <p>In the years since I left the rotten core that was once the big apple, I have observed the city's steady decline from two thousand miles away.
