Jesse Jackson

Quixotic is one word. Spoiler is another. Both of these words usually come somewhere between "Jesse Jackson" and "1996" in newspapers and magazines. Butas Bill Clinton moves to the center to win back the "Reagan Democrats," he opens up space for Jesse to run to his left.

Jackson has said that he won't run for the Democratic nomination, but he has not ruled out an independent bid, keeping Bill on a tightrope. Clinton will have to prove that he will defend the rights of the "Rainbow Coalition," without alienating the Reagan Democrats.

Even as the clintonites shiver over the possibilitiy of a Jackson bid, some Congressional Democrats think that it would boost their chances of winning back the House and Senate. According to their logic, minorities, who would be likely to turn out to vote for Jesse, traditionally vote Democratic.
