Like a Swiss Watch
LIKE A SWISS WATCH....Let's summarize the past couple of days: (a) Politico reports that La Palin has spent $150,000 on campaign outfits, (b) John McCain's brother calls 911 to complain about a traffic jam and then curses at the operator for telling him to get off the line, (c) the New York Times reports that Palin also spent $30,000 or so on hair and makeup over a period of two weeks, and (d) a white woman who claimed she was attacked by a black Obama supporter admits that the whole thing was a hoax.
But I guess this is no big deal because the McCain campaign was running so smoothly it could afford a few minor glitches like this, right?

here's another one for ya'
Randy Scheunemann, McCain's chief foreign policy adviser, sends Atlantic blogger Marc Ambinder an e-mail:
This is cleared by HQ. It is a fact that Barack Obama was palling around with terrorists. It was a fact before Governor Palin said it in a fully vetted speech and it is fact today. It is bullshit to claim or write anything else.

I just HOPE that the Obama campaign and its supporters (which include me) are not seduced by this string of horrible McCain campaign stories. None of this has any relevance to whether McCain's latest economic folderol could actually help him win this race.
We should stop gloating and start campaigning like we're behind.
Can't wait to see what Conservapedia adds to its Palin description. Here's the Conservapedia money quotes for John Edwards:
"In the spring of 2007, Edwards was ridiculed for getting $400 haircuts and charging his political campaign for them. He later said that he reimbursed his campaign $800.[6]"
"Critics also cite Edwards lack of government experience. One often heard criticism is that, other than the fact he has a full head of hair, there is little else to qualify him as a candidate."
Will she be reimbursing the campaign?
At least a broken Swiss watch is right twice a day... though I am too pessimistic to feel too excited. I'm not going to relax until November 5, and even then, I'm not sure I'll be able to do so.
I read that there is a question on that 150K. Some of the listed expenses (like baby clothes for a 2 year old, or cloths from a small trendy men's shop that has no record of the purchase) are suspicious. That makes it even more strange. Either $150K was spent on clothes, or $150K was lost or laundered.
We should stop gloating and start campaigning like we're behind.
I'd say we should enjoy watching McPalin self destruct while we campaign like we're going for a landslide.
In the words of Max Bialystok "Flaunt it, baby. Flaunt it."
I, for one, can both gloat and campaign at the same time. I'll be out canvassing door-to-door tomorrow and Sunday. I suggest that all Obama supporters who would like to see an Obama victory (or even a landslide) do the same. Get-out-the-vote is crucial.
Oh, and as for the gloating--McCain's campaign is the worst since Mondale. He will go down in flames on Nov. 4. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
But Kevin, you've repeatedly told us how bad it is of the media to discuss things like this when they should be focussing on serious policy issues.
Whatever could be different this time?
Nothing is different. These kinds of stories are still stupid distractions from real issues. The narrative may be (mostly) going our way this time but the fact that there is a narrative of this sort at all is still terrible. Still, it's OK to gloat now and then when things are going so badly for your political foes.
Also, RE: the hoax story. The McCain campaign and parts of the right-wing noise machine pushed this non-story hard before they knew it was a hoax. That makes the fact that it's a hoax a pretty legitimate story at this point.

So, will they suffer the same ignominous departure from the mainstream media as Dan Rather, post-TANG reporting?
I almost feel sorry for the McCain of 2000. Eight years will do a lot to a man. Eight years ago, I ran 20 miles a week, bicycled 50 and did a lot of dancing. Now I walk 20 miles a week, still dance but not as fast. McCain has certainly aged a great deal in 8 years. His ineptness and lack of discipline are his age.
Clearly, this is all good news for the Republicans.
Bruce is on the right track. By honing in on these trivialities, the Dems look pickyune and desperate. Have you any idea how much Pelosi spends a year on clothes? Or Obama's $1500 suits. Actually the desperate look for trash looks just like that. It's the policies, stupid. I figure everytime a Dem is stupid enough to attack Palin on a non issue, she gets another 1000 sympathy votes.
McCain is just turning out to be a despicable man and his family is too. I don't give a shit if he spent 100 years in a Vietnamese prison camp, this guy is a self-serving reptile who has no business being anywhere near the levers of government.
Finding myself giving in to the sleep deprived situation brought on by campaign obsession I now wish that McShame's campaign would get into a circular firing squad position and give us all a break...another week might just send us all into la la land...
makeup, hair and clothes may be frivolous relative to what's at issue here but i'm ready for a little levity.
anyone else notice that since the revelations of this spending spree that la palin seems to have lost her hairdresser?
that "policy" speech she gave? her hair looks like she got caught in the rain, and in video of a recent rally her "up-do" is measurably less polished.
i'm enjoying this very much.
Not to get too meta about
Not to get too meta about this, but shouldn't there be some sort of law that outgoing regimes a la BushCo can't lock us into deals extending more than a few months beyond their longevity?
