GOP Meltdown Watch

| Wed Feb. 18, 2009 9:15 AM PST
The Republican leader in the California state senate is one of only two GOP senators who's agreed to back a budget compromise that includes both spending cuts and tax increases.  Last night, Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) taunted the holdouts, telling them, "You ought to follow your leader or choose a new one."  It turns out they agreed:

Around 11 p.m., a group of GOP senators, unhappy with the higher taxes that Senate leader Dave Cogdill of Modesto agreed to as part of a deal with the governor and Democrats, voted to replace him in a private caucus meeting in Cogdill's office.

They chose Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth, a staunchly antitax lawmaker from Murrieta, as their new leader.

....Hollingsworth said he does not want to see a tax increase passed, but he offered no plan for resolving the budget crisis.

So it's back to square one with the flat earthers determined to wreck the state.  A friend of mine emailed to say that my post the other day comparing California Republicans to lemmings and neanderthals was unfair to both lemmings and neanderthals, and I guess he had a point.  So what do we compare them to now?

Imbeciles and morons? I

Imbeciles and morons? I really have no dog in this fight, and obviously California's been heading down this road for decades. Here in Colorado, we're doing a little better because the adults (Democrats) are in control (although in a few years when the state pension fund is insolvent, the shit will hit the fan). But I must ask, given the furloughs, and the cancellations of state projects, have the governor and the state legislature offered to forgo pay, or take a pay cut? These are all very wealthy people; they certainly could afford it. Will they share the pain?

Governor Schwarzenegger does

Governor Schwarzenegger does not take his salary, and never has.

ballot propositions?

California got into this fix through ballot propositions, can't they get out of it through ballot propositions?

Microbes do this thing

Microbes do this thing called chemotaxing where they move from areas of lower to nutrient concentration to areas of higher nutrient concentration. I think an analogy could be made with the GOP and tax cuts.

Limbaughs. Make it fail,

Limbaughs. Make it fail, then blame the other guy.

The only good thing...

...that might come out of this is that a majority in the legislature finally realizes that things are so FUBAR that radical surgery is required. How about redistricting *before* the timeline required by the last ballot initiative? How about no salaries for lawmakers if the budget process extends beyond the initial deadline, and no back pay? Obviously these measures will cause lawmakers much pain--but they're already in a lot of pain, so maybe the once-unthinkable becomes thinkable.

Experiment time: Cut

Experiment time: Cut government spending in the neanderthal districts by 50-100%. Enact the proposed compromise budget as much as possible in the other districts. See what happens.

Exactly! If they don't want

Exactly! If they don't want to raise taxes then they can cut spending in their districts. No more schools, roads, fire fighters, in the red districts. See how OC likes it when there's a fire but no one to put it out.

A better term for State Senate Republicans

Perhaps rather than insult lemmings and Neanderthals, it would be better just to compare them with Congressional Republicans.

Precisely - They're the Taliban.

Scary old men? Check. Fundamentalists? Check. Can't be reasoned with? Check. Cowardly? Check. Would sneak up on you and kill you if they had the chance? Check. Ladies and gentlemen, your Republican party, AKA the Taliban.

Bury Head In Sand, Wait for Danger to Pass

Honestly. I voted with the Republican party, for years, but the past decade and I half I have no idea who these people are who call themselves Republicans. They're mean and selfish people who will resort to the lowest tactics to win, then in office will do all they can to look out for themselves and their close friends. This isn't the GOP of my earlier years or of my father. They are a cruel lot who set government up for failure, loot treasuries for their mates and then pin the blame on the Democrats when things to tits up, screaming 'Tax and spend!' and 'Liberal'. I can plainly see the New GOP has no vision and no clues. People need to rise up and vote them out of office.

Banana Republicans

The GOP will not be happy until the California and the rest of the states enjoy a third-world standard of living. Low taxes and cheap labor, non-existent or incompetent government services. Did I mention government corruption? It's a feature, not a bug.

I don't know why Americans

I don't know why Americans get so upset over California. Ain't that part of Mexico?

No, California is a

No, California is a continent.

Starving the beast

This strikes me as the endgame for the "starving the beast" strategy - it appears the republicans really do beleive everyone will be better off if the government shuts down. It may be awful, but maybe it's better to have it happen to California first before they can inflict the same damage on the federal government. Sort of an "unleash the beast" strategy - let the real effects of this moronic position play out so we can shut it down once and for all. Pity it will cause so much suffering in the process, but I'm not sure how else you get these crazies out of office.

Let them live their insane dreams

felinecannonball has THE BEST idea which mirrors my own thinking. Let each group & their supporters experience their dream reality. Kevin Drum >"...So what do we compare them to now?" I`ll go with J.M. Keynes on this one. "...Madmen in authority, who hear voices in the air, are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back.” - John Maynard Keynes

How about . . .

Paramecia and amoebas?

So what do we compare them

So what do we compare them to now? Yeast.

Recalls?

Does California's recall law apply to the legislators? Are the citizens of these districts really happy that they have representatives who don't care what happens to the state?

Cali republican legislators

are like the Taliban -- zealots who would rather destroy society than let people live in some way the zealots do not agree with. As an appointed-by-case public defender in the California Court of Appeal, I (and several hundred like me) are not getting paid money we are owed until there is a budget. People are losing homes and on the edge of bankruptcy because of these zealots.

Cut spending...

I agree with felixcannonball, if these guys are so adamantly opposed to raising taxes and staunchly in favor of cutting spending, let the Governor order CHiPs not to patrol in these guys' district. When a forest fire starts there, tough luck! How about firing state employees only from these districts. Pretty harsh on everybody given the fact that possibly 40% of electors voted against these morons in their districts, but we are getting to a point where someone has to lead and the rest can either follow or become a roadkill.

republican identity cards?

How about we make it a requirement that all Republicans must carry Republican identity cards? The benefit of this for them would be that will be able to live in a world all their own. Everyone will treat them and deal with them in accord with the Republican fantasy world. They will have to pay no taxes at all for anything, but they will likewise be able to receive no social services taxes pay for. When they use the highway they will have to pay a special per-use fee or buy card like a bus card. They will not be eligible to run for office or participate in public life in any way. When they commit a crime they will just be shot, guilty or not, and if a crime is committed against them they will have to take matters into their own hands, whereupon they will be presumed guilty. They are among us, but not of us. I think it is the ideal solution. It will satisfy everyone.

Psycho killers

Not sure everyone is getting just how asinine and how difficult a corner Californians have painted themselves into by their successive ballot initiatives. These GOP legislators who are thwarting every attempt to prevent the apocalypse have already been so marginalized by voters that they are BARELY OVER A THIRD OF THE LEGISLATURE. You'll hardly find any remotely two-party states in the US where the minority party is smaller. YET THEY'RE ABLE TO COMPLETELY DESTROY THE STATE'S FINANCIAL SYSTEM, and so far no means has been found to prevent this. And to make it all the sweeter, this catastrophe is the more or less foreseeable outcome of a long succession of voter-approved initiatives over the last 30 years, each appealing to voters' very short-term, very UNenlightened self-interest, all pointing in the same direction and all irreversible. It represents a definitive demonstration that the voter initiative and referendum, in our society, is nothing more than a tool for mass suicide.

GOP meltdown???

The "dim"ocrats that post here should consider that the U.S. Census Bureau has estimated that the cost of the social services that are doled out to illegal immigrants by your bleeding hearts (bleeding my blood through the tax dollars you steal from me under protest) easily makes up the $15 billion that these new taxes will raise. Stop the spending you dimwits. This does not even account for the cost of keeping illegal immigrant prisoners incarcerated instead of deporting them. Let's take away the emergency services from the "blue" districts until the social services for these crimainal invaders of our nation are paid for by the "dim"ocrats.

GOP or Dem Meltdown?

How many of you have read the 2008-2009 California state budget? Have you examined the increases in staff across various departments and asked why? Have you asked where the largest buckets of money are going and what can be done to shave dollars instead of just asking for more? Sophomoric ideas as noted above offer no real solutions. The various propositions you mention indicate the people do not want liberal social solutions to every problem, especially when it hits their pocket books. Apparently the state legislature is out of touch with its constituency or too influenced by LA and SFO. Additionally, basing a significant part of your state revenue on sales taxes is a real killer when a recession occurs, which they do about every seven to ten years, regardless of who is in power. Regarding which political party is in decline and which is rising... check out the following reference at Rasmussen's Reports... http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/...

Bring it home

Why not do the obvious and cut state services in Republican districts only? Keep them closed until they agree to vote for the new budget...

Compare them to...

> So what do we compare them to now? Mindless robots programmed by Rush Limbaugh. This is the entirety of their programming: if (proposal.contains(:tax_increase)) { vote(:nay) }

Wait a minute!

My district is (un)represented by those jerks. We've tried and tried to get a Democrat into office, but due to the gerrymandered condition of our district, it just ain't happening. I write them letters, I send them emails, and still they refuse to budge. Don't close my schools. Help me get rid of them! Redraw those lines!

Boycott Republicans!

Boycott Republicans!

Here's a question - the crux

tagged as:
Here's a question - the crux of the issue is that it takes a 2/3rds majority to increase taxes. Can a ballot proposition change that? And if so, I realize that won't be in time to solve the current crisis, but after the GOP runs the state into the ground it seems like the best opportunity to change such a silly but reflexively popular system.

Yes, Barry, some of us have

Yes, Barry, some of us have read and analyzed the budget. The largest growth areas over the past twenty years are in Criminal Justice, and Health. The former is driven by mandatory sentencing initiatives, "three-strikes" and drug arrests. It is now about 13% of the budget, a doubling over the last couple of decades. Health care is, of course, driven by the rising costs of health care overall. It has risen from 16% of the budget to 22% of the budget. Most of health care seems to be in direct payments to needy, not something that drives up staff disproportionately in government itself. Also, the various propositions, as well as polling, shows that people actually do want more spending.
