Dog Food Explained!
So how did the Senate's provision forcing members of Congress to buy health insurance through the exchange end up in the final bill? A reader emails to explain:
The provision in the health care bill was added by Sen. Chuck Grassley. He originally wanted it to cover all federal workers — not just the Congressional ones — and obviously that created a bit of a stir. Baucus tried to placate him by adding language to say that federal employees may enter the exchanges, but that didn't work. So then Grassley offered his amendment saying, members of Congress and their staffs must use the exchanges. Perhaps he thought this would lead to an embarrasing fight, but Baucus said, "fine," and then that was that. As far as I know, the House version just says, members of Congress may enter the exchanges if they want to.
So there you have it. More here.

So, why shouldn't all
So, why shouldn't all federal workers be required to be on the exchange if everyone else is? Otherwise, the set up doesn't seem fair. Nor does it speak well of the quality of the exchange. Thank you.
Look, nobody is being
Look, nobody is being "forced" into health care exchanges...that's the language used by the opponents of HCR to scare people into "government takeover" BS. As far as I understand the present legislation...80% of us who are covered in employer based health plans will still be in those plans. Stop falling for this crap. It's the GOP that are suggesting these schemes..what do you think their aim is??? Scare tactics that's all. I wish it was true universal HCR, and we were all "forced" into it..but it's not.
If you don't pay for
If you don't pay for coverage now, (your 20%) you will be forced to buy via the exchanges. 20% is 1 in 5 people. It only seems fair to require government employees to be in the same system as the people they serve and the people that are paying their government employee salaries with their working class wages.
Not requiring obviously suggests the set up is a bad one. Thank you for being civil. I do not believe I am falling for crap, merely keeping an open mind.
Wow
