Quote of the Day #2
From Mark Shields, on President Obama's long process of trying to figure out what to do in Afghanistan:
It makes me nostalgic for those days when we had a manly man in the White House who could say, “Let’s kick some tail and ask questions afterwards” you know? That’s what we really need instead of any reflection.
You know, it's not that I don't sympathize at all with Shields here. It's true that Obama really has drawn out this process for an awfully long time. And who wouldn't want to just kick some tail if that was all it took to finish things up and bring the troops home? But it's time to grow up. Kicking tail is the easy part. It's figuring out what to do afterwards that's the problem. That's what Obama is trying to do.
UPDATE: Uncle! I admit it: I just read the quote online. I didn't watch the video and I didn't read any of the comments at ThinkProgress. Now that I have, yes, it's pretty obvious that Shields was being sarcastic. Sorry about that.

The delay, such as it is, along with last week's leaks, are probably part of the plan. The idea is to replicate the Surge strategy (Extra Soldiers and Marines + Negotiations/Payoffs to Select Militia Leaders + Central Government Focused by Threat of US Withdrawal).
Takes a while to get all three legs of the stool in place. Soldiers and Marines have to be repositioned from Iraq. Local leaders willing to play along need to be identified and contacted. The Central Gov't needs to be convinced the US presence is indeed temporary.
I'm guessing that Shields, a
I'm guessing that Shields, a liberal, was being sarcastic.
Mark Shields is wishing some
Mark Shields is wishing some ass-kicker like George W. Bush was back in charge.
And Mark Shields is ridiculous.

'Afterwards' is now.
What Mark Shields similar critics don't get is this IS 'afterwards.' It's been 'afterwards' for years now. But we never got around to the 'ask questions' part. This in-depth review is long overdue.
It was totally obvious to me
It was totally obvious to me that Shields was being sarcastic. All the fuss about this makes me despair for the liberal sense of humor.
Watch the tape. Shields is
Watch the tape. Shields is being sarcastic. Amazing how many of the comments on the Think Progress site missed it -- explains why sarcasm is a dangerous form of communication.
I didn't see this, but the
I didn't see this, but the views of others who did jibes with my instinct about what was going on. Shields was being sarcastic, and needling Krauthammer and/or Brooks at the same time. I think it's probably an unfair rap, though some seem to think Shields was clumsy in the way he did it.
Cripes, Kevin, can't you at
Cripes, Kevin, can't you at least read the comments at the sites you steal this stuff from??? Seems pretty clear Shields was being sarcastic, and lots of people said that.
Oops. Didn't mean to go
Oops. Didn't mean to go twice. Thought the first comment had vanished into the vortex.
Oh come on Kevin. If you
Oh come on Kevin. If you couldn't figure out that Shields was being sarcastic (even switching to a pseudo-untinking-macho voice when he spoke these words) then really, I'm worried about other things I read here. Those around him could tell right away, and joked along ("Bring it on!" said one -- I think the moderator). Krauthammer was also present.
But you should really be able to tell this even without watching the tape -- or you are out of touch with what's happening.
Also of note, in the same show, was Nina Totenberg (not exactly a conservative stalwart, and rather female, right?) dumping on the Democrats who complained about passing Stupak. She even called it the Deocrats' "Rush Limbaughism". Her position was: pass the health care bill -- abortion coverage will follow in time. Don't kill the bill for Stupak.
I know there are many here who disagree. It's worth watching that show for both of the above.
Harvard Study says up to
Harvard Study says up to 45,000 Americans die every year from lack of health care insurance.
Modern Feminists say, why do you always make it about you!
I'm guessing any decision
I'm guessing any decision now about troop levels couldn't be implemented until next March or April--same difference if decision is made in January.
I'm almost positive he's
I'm almost positive he's being sarcastic - of course with inside-the-beltway dumbassedness its so hard to tell.
This is why I can't stand
This is why I can't stand ThinkProgress. They've done this shit before and worse. Bunch of fucking ignorant moralistic prigs whose main worldview is they are liberal and so their first take on any issue is correct and you're just a goddamned fascist if you disagree.
In this issue they showed the smallest clip necessary to convey their point, not allowing anyone to see the actual context.
And then look how their regular commentators all buy into Mark Shields being a conservative further showing what a bunch of fucking idiots we like to hang out with.
And then look who bought into it, hook line and sinker: Duncan Black, because it fits his worldview so nicely, regardless of it being completely atypical for Shields.
If you had any guts Kevin, you'd of titled this post, Wanker of the Day, Duncan Black and Think Progress.
should be modified to: "is
should be modified to:
"is they define what liberal means and so their first take on any issue is correct and you're just a goddamned fascist if you disagree."
He's not doing to for this
He's not doing to for this reason but something Sully said made me think. We live in the culture of 24-hour news cycles and instant gratification. This kind of lengthy deliberation is totally foreign to the entire country right now. We can't stand it, it drives us crazy.
So I wonder how much of it is Obama trying to get people to break out of that culture? That was certainly his strategy in the campaign.
I don't know if it will work, I continue to believe his campaign strategy in that respect had failed. But I guess we'll see.
It's a tough call. The
It's a tough call. The Republicans have long had an advantage in being perceived as stronger in national security and defense, so what is the minimum number of troops that can be dispatched to Afghanistan without looking wimpy politically.
It's like taking prunes...is one enough, are two too many...
bad Internets!
This is troublesome. What makes the current wingnut whirlitzer so entertaining/bathetic is their Pavlovian literalism. This characteristic makes the Tbogg, the Poor Man, Sadly No! etc., snark the only pleasurable aspect of my otherwise miserable existence. I can revel in conservatives' complete lack of irony or self-awareness. The right's self-victimization and eagerness to punish their own also provides its share of chuckles.
Now think progress is engaging in the same type of oppo research perfected by the Bush campaign: utilize a literal reading of a nuanced statement as a cudgel. "Al Gore invented the Internet!", "Tire gauges!" ad nauseam.
The right wing noise machine displays a disconcerting ability inject the "stupid" into our national discourse. Their effectiveness would be admirable if it wasn't paralyzing our nation. But I worry that those who sympathize with my politics are taking on the worst of their attributes. This country does not need a left wing Fox News/ or a left wing NewsMax. It needs media/political institutions that can explain the grave problems facing our society in a coherent fashion.
That and a pony. Maybe I am naive, but I prefer our meme generators to act like adults, or better yet, convey adult concepts in a childish way.
Think Progress does good work countering canards, but they should do their homework before posting. Anyone who watches Mark Shields on PBS Newshour sees his sarcasm every Friday. Even David Brooks is sophisticated enough to recognize it.
Face it, a Tbogg entry on this episode almost writes itself: Literalist, accusatory, knee jerk links. Then a Balloon-Juice screen cap from memeorandum. ( Does it exist already?) Fortunately, the irony deprived wingnut base does not seem to have anyone who can exploit it.
You've been a bad Internets and you need to go to your room and think about what you have done.
jeez, kevin, you're
jeez, kevin, you're slipping. even reading the excerpt you showed told me it was sarcasm. 'manly man' didn't tell you?
still love you, though.
your pal,
blake
