Quote of the Day

From Sarah Palin, after Bill O'Reilly asked her if she thinks she's qualified to handle "the most powerful job in the world":

I believe that I am because I have common sense, and I have, I believe, the values that are reflective of so many other American values. And I believe that what Americans are seeking is not the elitism, the kind of a spinelessness that perhaps is made up for that with some kind of elite Ivy League education and a fact resume that's based on anything but hard work and private sector, free enterprise principles. Americans could be seeking something like that in positive change in their leadership. I'm not saying that has to be me.

I've been waiting for this transcript to appear ever since I heard this segment last night.  I started laughing halfway through and couldn't stop, which probably just proves that I'm one of those sneering coastal libertines Palin is talking about.  But there you have it: Palin is qualified to be president because she's got American values and she isn't a spineless elitist.

And yes, I know that I should probably pay less attention to Palin.  Sorry.  I can't help myself.  Her word-salad-straight-from-the-limbic-system approach to life is just too fascinating.  But as long as we're on the subject of elitist condescension toward Palin, check out this part of the O'Reilly interview about Iran:

PALIN: Let's start considering the sanctions that we should have been applying already, especially in this past year. Let's start looking at cutting off their imports of refined petroleum products.

O'REILLY: Does that mean a blockade, a naval blockade?

PALIN: We need to at least be willing to do such a thing and discuss it with our allies. And we need to be working closely with France and Britain, or other allies whom we can count on even.

O'REILLY: But they're already onboard. The primary...

PALIN: They're on board with what though? What were...

O'REILLY: They're onboard with economic sanctions against Iran. Do you know the country that isn't onboard, that's causing all the trouble here?

PALIN: Well, we have to question Russia's commitment to all this also.

O'REILLY: Excellent. Russia is the problem.

Palin was apparently unaware that Britain and France are already on board within beefing up sanctions on Iran, but that's par for the course with her.  Hardly worth mentioning.  But notice O'Reilly's reaction: he starts quizzing her like a big brother.  When she manages to pluck the right answer out her mental note file, he beams and almost pats her on the knee.  "Excellent.  Russia is the problem."

If Charlie Gibson or Katie Couric had pulled something like that, the conservosphere would be apoplectic with rage over their patronizing, elitist treatment of Palin.  Do you think O'Reilly will get the same treatment?  Me neither.

(BTW, I actually give O'Reilly some points for the way he conducted the interview.  Sure, it was basically friendly, but it wasn't fawning, and he did ask some tough questions and then fight back a bit when she delivered mangled platitudes instead of answers.  Overall, pretty good for a Fox host.)

"Overall, pretty good for a Fox host."

As Kevin pats O'Reilly on the knee.

That is a pretty awesome quote. I'm not sure how long this phenomena will last.

It was a "no-holds-barred interview" according to Fox.

That's the subhead on the page where Fox Nation has the video clips.

No-holds-barred !!!

Wow, that Bill O'Reilly is one tough mo-fo, isn't he?

What private sector

What private sector experience does Palin have?

And shouldn't someone point out that government isn't the private sector and that experience in it isn't all that relevant? The purpose of private sector corporations is to make a profit, the purpose of government is something altogether different.

i still think Matt Damon had

i still think Matt Damon had the best take on all this. "It's like a really bad Disney movie..'I'm just a hockey mom from Alaska.' And she's the president. And it's like she's facing down Vladimir Putin and using the folksy stuff she learned at the hockey rink. It's absurd....she's going to have the nuclear codes."

What private sector

What private sector experience does Palin have?

Why, as the manager of Alaska's collectively owned gas and oil reserves, she negotiated the deal for the inhabitants of the state when private oil interests wanted to extract and buy the government-owned oil.

Annually, she oversaw the state apparatus that sent each Alaskan a royalty check for their portion of the people's oil that had been sold to private interests that year.

Golly gee, if that's not the opposite of socialism, I don't know what is!

Palin as President ...

Palin would be the "stupid is as stupid does" President - and boy does she do stupid!

She is, plain & simple, a MILF - that is what attracts the vast majority of Republicans to her & why her 15 minutes are almost up.

Because once the jowls (& everything else) start to sag a bit more, Rich Lowry & all his fellows will snap right out of it.

"Fact resumé"

The biggest laugher in the Palin-O'Reilly interview was her dismissive use of the phrase "fact resumé." WTF other kind of resumé is there than a "fact resumé"? Oh yeah, one made of the hot air and bullsh*t that has characterized La Palin's public life from start to (I hope) finish.

But I don't take her lightly. She's the most dangerous (and deranged) demagogue to come to prominence in our political culture since Huey Long. As a lifelong Democrat I should be applauding her progress, which will annihilate the Republican party. But I don't. We need two responsible political parties in this country, and Palin's GOP won't be one of them.

Clever, clever!

Or it would be, if she had actually said "fact" resume. She didn't. She said "fat" resume. Palin is frequently incoherent, but not nearly as incoherent as these rushed-out transcripts make her appear to be. (Read a posted transcript of an Obama interview sometime.)

How long is it going to take some of you people to finally realize that you cannot trust what *anybody* says about what somebody else says?

That's what you noticed?

You didn't notice that she wants to cut of IMPORTS OF PETROLEUM INTO Iran?

Iran is importing oil in her world?

Hey, moron

Iran imports *40 PERCENT* of its petroleum products. Go look it up.

So where's your world, hmmm?

30 seconds: That's about all I can take

I've tried and I can't do it. Listening to her screechy tone while she mangles folksy metaphors is like nails on a chalkboard inside an aluminum tube. ugh.

O'Reilly is

actually quite a decent interviewer when he does these high-profile things. His interview with Hillary back during the primaries was easily the best.

Kevin, you might want to notice a key word in your description-- "friendly." The problem with both Couric and to a lesser extent Gibson is that they made their distaste for her clearly visible from the outset. Couric was outright hostile, Gibson just condescending. Gee, I wonder why Palin reacted differently to O'Reilly..

Couric and Gibson?

So when confronted by the hostile or condescending she falls apart and babbles and then complains how mean people are to her? What would happen if she met Vladimir Putin? My god, Margaret Thatcher would have had her crying in the corner, apologizing for the Boston Tea Party.

O'Reilly's a blowhard, but

O'Reilly's a blowhard, but he's always been a surprisingly fair and probing interviewer of politicians.

Palin, well, she's smart enough, she's charismatic enough, but damn I've never seen a lazier candidate. She's making no effort at all. And even if she "boned up" that wouldn't make her ready to be President. She never demonstrated any sort of administrative skills or leadership skills. For all of Obama's faults, replacing his greenness with someone even greener doesn't strike me as a good idea.

Romney and Pawlenty at least have actual leadership accomplishments to brag about.

I wish a journalist would

I wish a journalist would ask Palin about her Native American roots.

So You Think It Won't Happen....

I still think she'll be elected President after we fail to rally behind Obama and work hard to combat the idiot right! It's obvious that we aren't respecting the best one we've had in 40 years! We get the leaders we deserve.

You don't have to see transcripts to know her speech is compromised to the point of psychosis at times! It is very scary, worse than Bush at the podium. Remember her debate with Biden when she TOLD us she would change the role of Vice President like Cheney had begun to do!

She will be President if we sit back in our "elitism" and think Americans are smart enough!

Listening to Sarah

I don't need a transcript of her words as they come shooting out of her mouth sans thought, contemplation or integrity. She really does speak in sound bites, and often (remembering her talk with Wolf Blitzer after the election) she seems to make so little sense it's like she's psychotic.

Like Steven Colbert says, she picks the phrases off the frig in no particular order.
