Evangelical Leader: "Vote for Romney is Vote for Satan"

| Fri May. 11, 2007 1:52 PM PDT

Yikes. Take a look at what an evangelical leader is saying about Mormon presidential candidate Mitt Romney. His name is Bill Keller, host of the Florida-based Live Prayer TV, and he writes in his daily devotional (which reaches 2.4 million people):

"If you vote for Mitt Romney, you are voting for Satan! ... Romney is an unashamed and proud member of the Mormon cult founded by a murdering polygamist pedophile named Joseph Smith nearly 200 years ago. The teachings of the Mormon cult are doctrinally and theologically in complete opposition to the Absolute Truth of God's Word. There is no common ground. If Mormonism is true, then the Christian faith is a complete lie. There has never been any question from the moment Smith's cult began that it was a work of Satan and those who follow their false teachings will die and spend eternity in hell."

I particularly like this crazy paranoid line, which betrays a deep insecurity:

"Romney getting elected president will ultimately lead millions of souls to the eternal flames of hell!"

I think it's important to condemn this sort of bigotry and ignorance. I know it's fun to watch a party with a problematic history with race relations -- and that is sometimes openly hostile to minority voters -- turn its prejudice in on its own, but liberal bloggers have an obligation to stay consistent. We would condemn this sort of nonsense if the angry reverend was attacking Muslim legislator Keith Ellison (D-MN), so we have a responsibility to condemn it when he attacks a Republican. Even if that Republican has no principles and is in the process of saying whatever he has to in order to be elected.

Man, this is fun, isn't it?

I've been waiting for this to happen. Al Sharpton and now this guy. I've said here and on other forums that when the rubber meets the road, evangelical will not vote for or endorse a mormon. Ever. Mitt should abandon his far right pandering and move to the center...which is what he'll do when (if) he gets the nomination.

It is funny to hear the goobers and bubbas. It is good to lightened up and laugh sometimes, even at ourselves. Then again, they do say that I have a perverse sense of humor. Oh well, time for another Jack Daniels.

Keller's message may be hateful, but it doesn't change the fact that the Mormon church is a cult, as well as a Fortune 500 company. Have you ever read the Book of Mormon? I have, and it is ridiculously, laughably, batsh*t insane. I wouldn't vote for a Mormon anymore than I would an Evangelical Christian.

seriously? this from the guy who made the Mormons eat each other joke?

Have you ever read the New Testament? (Or the Old.) It's equally batsh&t insane. Anyone who quotes it (like Romney - link below) doesn't have my vote.

Austin: "Have you ever read the New Testament? (Or the Old.) It's equally batsh&t insane."

Yeah, but it's well-written batshit insanity.

The mormon church is a cult.

There is only one true church.

I would not vote for a Zionist either. Look at the two California Zionist Senators and how they support the state of Israel's occupation of third world people. Israel promotes NOT a vision of a inclusive "multi-cultural," "multi-ethnic" society (like we do in America) for Israel, but instead a racist exclusionary "Jewish state." It is racist because a Jew is defined as coming from a Jewish mother(genes). That state is openly dedicated to the advancement of the Jewish religion, culture, and even the genetic preservation of the Jewish people. It vigorously opposes intermarriage of Jews with non-Jews. Israel's Parliament has passed a law preventing Palestinians who marry Israelis from living in Israel. The move was denounced by international human rights organizations as racist, undemocratic and discriminatory. Israel uses racial profiling. Israel values Judaism above other religions. Israel should seek to be welcoming and inclusive and respect all religions, or even those with no religion. .
Israeli ethnocentric, chauvinism and xenophobic values are just too extreme. Israel does not share American values and let us therefore not share American taxpayer money with them. Israel needs to advance to the 21st century in its values. The days of racism should be a thing of the past.

You people posting here have some serious problems!

This totally ANONYMOUS Keller guy is a LEADING evangelical like Vanilla Ice is a LEADING Rapper.

LOL!!!!

Mr. Stein's observation is amiss. Keller's views are completely in line with traditional evangelical teaching among many denominations such as Assembly of God, Baptist, Nazarene, Church of God, various Pentecostals and quite a few of Methodist and Presbyterian offshoots.

Even though many of these folks may not speak up, that does not mean that Keller (whomever he is) in incorrect with his interpretation of traditional Protestant, Evangelical teachings.

Stein, et al is now on notice to do further research even if one or two did grow up in the back pews of one or more of these denominations! Because it (the Keller view) sounds new or strange to some does not mean that people so commenting are informed. They are not!

when are we stopping of mixing religion with politics. I guess we are still in the mid evil times here in the USA.(only a couple 100 years behind the rest of the westernized world!

I always thought a vote for a Republican was a vote for Satan. Especially the last seven years.

It's this type of name-calling by "religious leaders" that makes being an atheist seem attractive. There's plenty of reasons not to like Romney besides his religion and taste in underwear.

"It has served us well this myth of Christ" -- Pope Leo X

This doesn't surprise me. As soon as I heard that Romney was a Mormon, I knew it would only be a matter of time before the some evangelical Christian would attack him for being a Mormon. I was raised as a Southern Baptist: Baptist hate everyone and think that anyone who is not a Baptist is in a cult. The Baptist still think Catholicism is a form of paganism.

It is my guess that God thinks they are all cults. Oh, you don't believe in God? God likely thinks you are a member of a cult as well, known as the conservative fundamentalist batsh*t insane cult of self-organizing processes.

It keeps getting harder and harder to know who to feel the most sorry for, conservative religionists who imagine they speak for God or liberals, who can't grasp the concept that there just might be a difference between God and religon, nor comprehend the fact that the sky is very, very, very big while we in fact, are far, far, far, smaller than a microscopic organisim in the intestinines of a knat on a fly's ass, by comparison to only the known universe (God only knows what lies beyond).

Pity the myopic liberal who becomes a victim of Jerry Falwell by refusing to believe in God because of idiots like him.

I think that it is great that we make such a big deal about one's religion. I know that I would not vote for a Zionist like Percy. Let us spend a lot of time talking about the Zionists, and the Christians and etc. and not about money issues like the rich not paying their taxes and Senator Clinton not wanting to disclose her tax return so we can see how she cheats on her taxes and their $100 million income. You people remind me of the people in the middle east who live in a mud hut and just have their Koran. Stop being manipulated like these middle eastern people and follow the money trail.

I'm waiting for some intrepid reporter to ask Romney how he feels about Baptism for the Dead. Though it is buried quite deep in the doctrines of the Mormons, it is still the fundamental basis for their belief in the afterlife and their plan to populate heaven with Mormons only. Ever looked up your family tree through the folks in Salt Lake City? Ever wonder why records of your family tree were even there, be you Jew, Catholic, Sunni? Ask Mitt Romney. Then tell me you'd vote for him no more than you would vote for a guy holding a sign reading "The End is Near!"

As for the rest of the fundamental true believers - the voice of God has not been heard by anyone in a very long time and the reporting of the those events was just as skewed as political reporting today. The words of Men!

You should ask Senator Feinstein what the Talmud says about the goyim and the Shiksa and the Jews ruling over them. We should ask our Jewish Senators and Congress persons about what the Talmud says concerning things of interest to the goyim.

On Wednesday, March 1st, 2006, in Annapolis at a hearing on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at American University, was requested to testify. At the end of his
testimony, Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs said: 'Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that? Raskin replied: 'Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the
Bible.'

Seems people keep forgetting this basic concept!

[Amendment I: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF;]

I think the framers got it exactly right, and the right reverend Keller can go pound sand up his ass, if someone else's "free exercise thereof" gives him heartburn.

Just because some idiot can get himself on television in Florida doesn't mean everyone in the country has to take him seriously. After all, didn't Jeb Bush get on television? And if we got worried at every possibility of Satan getting elected we wouldn't have a president...or a vice president....or an attorney general....or a secretary of defense....or state......or white house counsel....or a supreme court......or a house on K Street....or the Weekly Standard.....or the Fox News Network......Ooouuuuchhhhh!

Karl! psssssst, Karl! ...Get that fork out my ass, will ya?

You have to remember that these are the very same evangelicals who blithely ignore on a weekly basis at least a hundred Levitical scriptures while condemning gays on the one that condemns gays. These clowns have supported drug prohibition - despite the total absence of scripture supporting such a position. If these clowns would only follow their own teachings they would be less problematic.
Jesus stated: tell the truth. Mao stated: the truth is only relevant when it serves the greater public good. On the lies surrounding the War on Drugs [notably the one where the lack of studies prior to bans are NEVER mentioned in curriculums or news items] they have shown a huge tolerance for public deceit. Why would anyone trust the judgment of someone who defines truth with Mao over truth with Jesus?

As an acknowledged Christian, I appear to have many individuals speaking on my behalf, Christian and non-Christian alike, presumptuosly declaring what I purportedly believe. Well, for the record, here is a small representation of what Fred London, a Christian man, truly believes. To whatever extent you may agree or disagree with my views, they are at least, my views, and therefore, make myself legitimately accountable.

I recognize that America was founded to a large extent on Biblical principles. Many, if not most, of our founding father were either Christians, Deists, or at least had some moral, spiritual compass.

That said, contrary to some, America is not a theocracy, nor was it ever called to be. In all of history, only Israel can make that claim, but that issue is for another time. I do not expect our president to be an executive senior pastor. Granted, if we can have a godly person who is also a competent and effective leader, that would be the total package as far as I am concerned. It also must be noted that in many instances in recorded Biblical history, God in fact used pagan kings to accomplish his divine purposes. In other words, situations can not always be reduced to mere black and white issues. I am also keenly aware of God's dealings in the invisible, spiritual realm, and acknowledge the sovereignty of God in the affairs of men.

However, on the surface, if I must choose between a godly person lacking the necessary leadership qualities and a person who does not share what we might consider as a Biblically defined Christian, unless the Holy Spirit clearly leads otherwise, I go with the competence, along with fundamental core values as decency and integrety, coupled with much prayer on behalf of this individual, which we are Scripturally exhorted to do for all of our leaders, regardless of their beliefs.

More specifically, my voting for Mitt Romney or not will be determined by my perceptions as to his competence for that position, along with a reasonable and acceptable degree of character, while seeking much discernemnt through prayer. This is my standard and approach to all who seek public office and will especially be applied to all seeking the most powerful office in all the world, the Presidency of the United States.

This is my story and I'm sticling to it!

Fred London

Wow, no wonder the conservatives think we're nuts. Let's try not to offend everyone now, okay? Romney's not the only LDS (Mormon) politician. Most of us seem to forget that there are members of that church in both parties... like Senator Reid, the (hello!) Senate Majority Leader (a Democrat). And progressive liberals like myself who also happen to be religious (and, in my case, LDS). Religious teachings are (for the most part) fundamentally good (love your neighbor, take care of the Earth, etc). The interpretations thereof, however, are often culturally and incorrectly interpreted and applied. Let's leave the bigotry at home, shall we?

Consiousness begets reality. Think of it, it will happen.

"Let's leave the bigotry at home, shall we?"

Agreed, and let's also leave the religious beliefs at home, too. This round of comments goes to show that among liberals there's a wide variety of belief systems. I wouldn't expect us all to agree on theology (or lack thereof). But I would expect us to agree on 2 things:
1 - bigotry is just an ugly distraction
2 - religious beliefs shouldn't even be a part of the political discussion

You right Kathy. Bigotry is universal in human nature, unfortunately. As you can see, some liberals believe that bigotry is neither good nor bad, it just depends who the target is.

i would vote for romney. Why? he is one of the few who has any MORALS.

This Keller guy has caused a casm between my Father and I. My Father (nearly 80 now) gives him his money and listens to this nut bag. "To obey is better than sacrifice." Then he goes on to ask for money in this article on his site. I volunter with NFP's and believe that *helping* those who cannot help themselves is how one should live their life. According to Keller, and now my Father..."obeying" by giving a "gift" of money to Keller's bank account is. This has nothing to do with *any* sort of religion. It's a bad human being taking advantage of those easily led or less fortunate and that's all. However, if whatever God one believes in *is* omnipitent, He would be watching...now wouldn't He Mr. Keller? He's a sad man.

Disgusted, you can get back at Keller by giving to Romney's campaign and you will feel so much better. I know, I did.

"..you can get back at Keller by giving to Romney's campaign.."

Better yet, I'll write Keller and tell him I'm so disgusted with him about this that I'm going to send the large donation I was Going to send HIM (Keller) to Romney instead.

Then I'll send my money to Ron Paul, because I'm a big fan of Government by the Constitution.

First of all he racist guy and he goes to israel he call himself jew and than he come back USA he call himself christian.
Basiclly he is this busines for money and i will never trust a jew.

Personally, I'll never believe a racist word that comes from the keyboard of anybody who might commonly be called "Randy".

Randall, be patient, your meds will arrive in the mail soon. The Holiday held them up.
