Money Bomb! Ron Paul Raises Almost $3 Million in a Single Day
It's called a money bomb, and it's the unique province of Ron Paul supporters. This is getting to be one of the most bizarre phenomenons American politics has seen in decades.
Update: An email from the Paul campaign makes it clear that they're still going.
Is it possible to comprehend what we've done today? Earth-shattering, jaw-dropping... No matter which way you phrase it, Ron Paul is for real.
Over $3,800,000 raised.
More than 35,000 total donations.
1 message - and 1 candidate - unlike any other.
Can we keep our momentum going? The most successful fundraising day ever is John Kerry's $5.7 million. And that was on the day he accepted the Democratic nomination.

As of this writing, Ron Paul has raised approximately $4 million.
Simply amazing!
Another nail in the warmongering, authoritarian neocon coffin, as Ron Paul is their worst enemy.
Bye bye Huckabee...Bye, bye McCain. Make room for Ron Paul.
Don't be fooled by this conservative soothsayer! Ron Paul just wants to get rid of the federal income tax (ie. letting huge corporations and the very rich of the hook pretty much completely), get rid of Social Security, Medicare, WHO, and a whole slew of other social programs and regulations. Also, most bizarre of all, he wants a return to the gold standard...yeah, because that sure worked in the 19th Century.
Please my fellow liberals! Don't be seduced by his bold yet lie-filled talk!
James has it all wrong. First, his plan of shutting down the American Empire is the only way to keep Social Security and Medicare from going bankrupt. Secondly, Ron Paul is the corporatists worst nightmare. He wants to eliminate corporate welfare and end the cozy relationship between the federal government and the corporations.
AND, when it comes to monetary policy, you really need to educate yourself - I'll get you started...
The Fed creates money out of thin air (presto!) then loans it to the Congress so they can do their deficit-spending. These private bankers then charge interest to the tax payers for this money that they created. Also, when this money is added to the money supply, it drives price inflation - destroying the
value of the dollar. So while your paycheck looks the same (or even increases), your buying power is going down.
All of this results in a transfer of wealth from the poor and middle class to the bankers, Wall Street, and the corporations (who get billions in corporate welfare).
It's an economic scam against the American people and Ron Paul is the only one talking seriously about ending it.
People think constant, rampant inflation is a normal part of the economy - it is not. It is engineered to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Ron Paul thinks it's criminal. He means to stop it.
Yeah, because we all know the value of gold is totally stable and unchanging, right?
I agree, we do need to end corporate welfare, but if we end the federal progressive income tax system as well, where the hell is our government going to get money to operate? I mean, Uncle Sam pisses me off sometimes same as the next guy, but still, I kind of like having an army to protect me as well as pensions for seniors and disabled, etc.
And Social Security really doesn't have anything serious wrong with it. That's just a stupid myth Bushies invented to try to privatize it. The only problem that it has is that it hasn't been adjusted for inflation enough, and that Bush keeps raiding it for tax cuts for the rich.
If a loon like Ron Paul took over our country and got what he wanted, the rich-poor gap we have now would expand to a chasm. It's ridiculous to even conceive.
As for Ron Paul's supporters, they remind me more of cult-members than anything else. Sorry if that offends, but that's how I feel about it.
"As for Ron Paul's supporters, they remind me more of cult-members than anything else. Sorry if that offends, but that's how I feel about it."
I agreee.
"The most successful fundraising day ever is John Kerry's $5.7 million."
Simply not true.
Facts are stupid things.
Paul now ranks only behind Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton, who raised nearly $6.2 million on June 30, and Barack Obama.
****
Ron Paul and his paulites have a little trouble with the facts.
James,
I may not change your mind, but I implore you to further your personal education with respect to our political realities.
(1) An end to the progressive income tax would leave the Federal Government with revenue at the level of the Year 2000. Yes, you read that correctly. Personal Income Tax largely if not fully pays interest on Federal Debt. A deconstructed military empire would more than make up for lost amounts. This is Ron Paul's carefully constructed plan for the future.
2) Most of your pet socialist programs ultimately lead the opposite of their intended ends. (read Mises) However, even if you believe they would work in theory, they are made worse by being federal, which makes them one-size fits all and subject to national compromises--the kind of compromises that render the programs useless and counterproductive. Local and state level programs (and private charity) by definition fit more with the principle of subsidiarity and allow for more carefully constructed, compassionate programs that actually tailor to people's wants or needs. Ron Paul's aim is to bring the Fed back to Constitutional levels. He is not a State-level politician, and thus has nothing to do with them. A core purpose of the American federation was to allow the states the right and ability to experiment in their legislation.
(3) The Fed is poison. Please visit www.mises.org for a new take. Regardless, Paul is not a Government Gold-Standard backer. He is far from it. He supports privately chose market money, which in today's Internet age, could be gold, silver, oil, baskets of stocks, baskets of other currencies by governments or frozen and concetrated orange juice. The Government monopoly on money, especially through the Fed, since 1913 has been the hidden current and hidden cause of much of the 20th centuries greatest problems in this country - wars, depressions, recessions, hyper-inflation and an ongoing process of de-civilization, whereby people grow poorer, more dependent and more focused on the present at the expense of the future.
The gold standard worked until 1972. Then you might remember there was a bit of stagflation after the dollar was sunk to pay for skyrocketing expenditures.
Common, it was 35 years ago, don't tell me your public school education hasn't wiped out your ability to think critically, even about things like currency?
oh, kewl!
capt is back with 'the facts' again!
capt, tell us 'the facts' about how Ron Paul voted for a 'ban on gay adoptions in D.C.' again?!?!
that was a good one!
and i loved the part where you documented your claim with all the detail about the bill that would have instituted the ban and all...
it was every bit as good as the documentation you just provided about who had 'the biggest' fund-raising day!
you know, i can't help but notice that hardly a month ago, all you Ron Paul detractors were making light of him, with lots of noise and laughter, calling him a 'fringe candidate'; 'at the bottom of the second tier' of contenders, 'going nowhere', repeating all of Sean Hannity's belittling phrases and whatever
today, you're reduced to splitting hairs over whether he had the Second, or the Third biggest fund-raising day EVER by a presidential contender!!
could last month's position by Ron Paul's detractors have been WRONG?!?!
wonder what positions you'll be reduced to taking a month from NOW?
"capt is back with 'the facts' again!"
As always, and I provided the source.
Seems some still have issues with facts. (darn facts)
OW
Ron Paul - Voted YES on banning gay adoptions in DC.
Vote on an amendment banning adoptions in District of Columbia by gays or other individuals who are not related by blood or marriage.

Those darn facts - they seem to confuse some people.
I can't imagine any thinking person that would even consider voting republican after the mess the GOP has us in thanks to Bush AND the rest of the GOP.
Ron Paul voters are still stuck in republican ideology even if Ron Paul decides to change to an Indy.
His racists comments are only what he says they are - either he is honest and the quotes were written by a ghost writer under Ron Paul's name or he is a liar and he wrote them himself. Either way he is using the Bush defense of "I was too stupid to have done something THAT stupid".
Assuming he did not write those offensive insults - he let someone publish the comments UNDER his name (Ron Paul) in HIS newsletter?
Nothing like taking responsibility for ones own actions or inactions.
His voting record exposes him as less than charitable to gays, blacks and other non-whites. (strike two)
Ron Paul has in those amazing numbers of supporters the white-supremacist and neo-nazis - no a ringing endorsement of cultural understanding. (strike three)
Ron Paul is not my choice for dog catcher or any other elected office.
Now I know the Paulites cannot understand that someone would not support their choice for candidate but THAT exposes them as lacking the tolerance to discuss political issues openly and honestly.
Bottom line, I know Ron Paul supporters think he walks on water - he does not. That kind of delusional devotion is why some see the Ron Paul supporters as more cult like and less than serious.
The lack of objective perspective and honesty makes taking them seriously very difficult.
james, i'm gonna go ahead and guess that you don't know the first thing about fiscal policy. i like a good argument as much as anyone, but do you think that you know more than a guy serving in the joint congressional economic committee?
wrong again, capt!!
that's the link i provided YOU, a couple days back, but you've neglected to include the TEXT i also provided, that clearly showed that what was at issue was FUNDING for adoptions!!
there was NO 'ban' in the text
actually GO TO the thomas, library of congress link you're alleging to quote, and you find this text of said amendment:
[H.R. 2587; H.AMDT.356
AMENDMENT PURPOSE:
An amendment no. 2 printed in H.Rept. 106-263 to Prohibit Any FUNDING for the joint adoption of a child between individuals who are not related by blood or marriage.]
again, i ask the question you didn't answer the last time i quoted the amendment for you:
where's the 'ban'?
show it to me.
www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d106:6:./temp/~bdMaLM::
refusing federal monet to FUND an action does not constitute a 'ban' on it, now does it?
deal with The Facts As They Are, rather than as you wish they were, for once in your life.
Here's an odd test of truth. What did Ron Paul say when asked about his racist comments from his political newsletter by a reporter at the Houston Chronicle?
******
"Texas congressional candidate Ron Paul's 1992 political newsletter highlighted portrayals of blacks as inclined toward crime and lacking sense about top political issues.
Under the headline of ""Terrorist Update," for instance, Paul reported on gang crime in Los Angeles and commented, ""If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be."
Paul, a Republican obstetrician from Surfside, said Wednesday he opposes racism and that his written commentaries about blacks came in the context of ""current events and statistical reports of the time."

I guess it took a few years to realize it wasn't HIM, it was that dastardly ghost writer.
Sure I believe it was Casper the friendly ghost.
Vote republican - it has worked so well so far. . .
Again - those pesky facts:

*******
The other problem that seems to infect the Paulites is a complete refusal to admit error. Just like Bush, never made a mistake no matter how many times proven wrong.
You see a restriction is a ban by other words.
Too funny.
cap, hang on... so you prefer our tax dollars go to funding abortions for the random skank down the street who can't afford it? there's free condoms at planned parenthood. how about a little pre-emptive strike?
and the gay marriage thing... i would just hope gay folks would be more rational than straights in not deciding to get the government all mixed up in their love life.
capt sez:
"His voting record exposes him as less than charitable to gays, blacks and other non-whites."
oh, you mean like his consistent votes against proposed constitutional amendments like this one?
[H J Res 88: Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to marriage.

capt sez:
"Ron Paul has in those amazing numbers of supporters the white-supremacist and neo-nazis - no a ringing endorsement of cultural understanding."
got anything to keep that claim afloat, besides your own hot air?
link to some data perhaps?
yeah capt, it IS TOO funny!
you can't seem to read your own references!!
they're all about Not FUNDING an adoption process with federal dollars, and YOU want to pass that off as a ban on the process.
then you claim others won't admit error!
that is TOO Funny!
@ Cap: "His voting record exposes him as less than charitable to gays, blacks and other non-whites. (strike two)"
Is this to imply that Gays, blacks and other Non-whites SHOULD be entitled (or by definition NEED) government sanctioned charity?
What you fail to see Capt, is that voting against federally sactioning some type of handout or redistribution of (forcibly obtained) tax dollars is in no way to say he is 'against' a particular person or group of people. It's just that he has the belief that it is not the business of the Government to stick it's nose into (and financially support) all these social agendas.
It is mental light weight simple mindedness that believes that only the Government can be charitable, and that charity should only come from Government. Please, read further clarification here.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul80.html
Typically, politicians do not conduct some particular activity because it's the correct or most moral decision, but rather base their agendas on things that have the highest potential to bring them personal reward (financial and vote-wise).
If you have any trouble understanding what having ethics and morals means, please read this article to be even further enlightened.

From: http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761564420/Miscegenation.html
Miscegenation, intermarriage or extramarital relations between people of different races (see Race). In modern times miscegenation has been regarded with strong disapproval in many nations of the Western world, and social ostracism and prohibitive legislation have been employed to prevent such unions. The prejudicial attitude toward miscegenetic marriages stems mainly from obsolete conceptions of race and heredity. Also contributing to the attitude are white supremacy theories, and the inferior social status commonly imposed on dark-skinned people, and consequently on the children of mixed marriages, in various nations throughout the world.
In the United States, restrictive legislation against miscegenation originated during the period of slavery in colonial times. These laws were designed to protect the right of the slaveholder to the offspring of the slaves, and the laws included severe penalties. Statutes passed subsequently in the majority of the states declared miscegenetic marriages void, purportedly to preserve racial purity. Most of these statutes were directed against blacks, but some applied more broadly to include all non-white people. Between 1942 and 1967, 14 states repealed their antimiscegenation laws. In 1967, the Supreme Court of the United States declared antimiscegenation laws unconstitutional.
*****
36 states were forced to repeal laws that outlawed mixed marriage.
That was a good thing and America survived.
Go figure, a special law for those special people.
Yeah, we need laws to protect and defend people of color, gays, and others from the fear and hate represented by many in and out of politics.
capt sez:
["Yeah, we need laws to protect and defend people of color, gays, and others from the fear and hate represented by many in and out of politics."]
oh yeah, capt,
laws are going to Protect Us from other people's Emotions!
brilliant thinking!
there are laws everywhere to allow authorities to pursue retribution and restitution in case of crimes against persons and property, and that's all that laws can ever really do, until such time as we decide to allow government to shape our thinking
do you want to go there?
risk having a future 'karl rove' deciding how you're going to be 'programmed'?
legal or police 'protection' is a myth we'd do well to stop perpetrating
Well fortunately, we have nothing to worry about because Ron Paul will NOT secure the nomination for the GOP, as we all know the vast majority of Republicans are conformist dittoheads who aren't interested in anything new and would rather nominate the guy who can say "9/11" most frequently.
If he does get the nomination by some miracle, he'll lose. That all suits me down to the ground, because to tell you the truth, I love taxes, I really do. The only problem I have with taxes is that they fall too often on the poor and middle class and not on the rich. If I could find a way to give this country's rich elite a 70% tax rate, I'd love to do it. Ron Paul talks about no income taxes and people swallow it up like it's great. It's not. Without taxes, our government would fall apart, pure and simple. You say you could rely on state's themselves to handle peoples' needs without the federal government? Yeah, sure, that's why we have the Articles of Confederation instead of the Constitution, right?
and before anyone gives me any BS about high taxes on the rich stifling business and making people lose jobs, just look at what Bush's tax cuts have done to our middle and lower class. Bush cut taxes on big business, and not a single new net job has been created, and people are falling farther in debt than ever, while tutoring programs for public schools and veteran's benefits suffer. The only people who can afford tax cuts on the rich are the rich, period. They're so selfish, they don't want to take care of anyone but themselves, and Ron Paul wants to give them the leeway to do just that.
Dr. Paul would liberate more blacks, minorities, the poor, the rebellious, the curious, with his promised " entire repeal of the federal drug laws" which currently incarcerate over $540,000 in 2006, 63% of them were black. I figure 4 years of Dr. Paul not arresting blacks, restoring their voter status, pardoning all non-violent drug offenders, will liberate more African-Americans that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
That's indisputable. So some claim that 15 years ago. Dr. Paul said a racist remark, gee, I guess we should just let those hundreds of thousands languish in jail because some remark 15 years ago, which Dr. Paul has already explained satisfactarily.
Free the slaves! - Ron Paul For President .
Bless you, James, I agree completely. There's nothing wrong with taxing income - it's that rich fuckers with millions pay almost nothing. We need to not reject taxes but tax cuts to the highest percent. Ron Paul's ideas appeal to overly simplistic thinkers who actually believe that the average joe will make great choices for his neighbors without government controls. I'm no prohibitionist. I believe in people with no record of insanity or crime being able to own guns. I believe in legalizing marijuana. I believe for very personal reasons in legalizing same sex marriage. I do not want government in my back yard. But people are allowing the Bush administration's terrible record to sour their view of a solid presence of government in our lives. A solid government, funded with taxes, can maintain roads, public education for kids who need it, enforce environmental standards and basic laws that protect us, let alone parks and recreation, food safety and other benefits that people are taking for granted in their Ron Paul itty-bitty government zeal. In utter and complete defiance of the Ron Paul CULT - I am a proud socialist.
Exactly. Without government, something else will fill the vacuum. What do you think it will be? The rich will look after their own. They can always use "security firms" - AKA mercenary armies, to protect themselves. The rest of us need police, fire departments, armies, etc. They don't need public education for their kids, most of the rest of us do. That's why Ron Paul's small-government, no-tax BS can go back to where it came from for me. I just hope he splits the GOP ticket enough to make sure the Dems win. It really saddens me how many easily-influenced young liberals craving a dramatic change have been tricked into following him as well, though.
["You say you could rely on state's themselves to handle peoples' needs without the federal government? Yeah, sure, that's why we have the Articles of Confederation instead of the Constitution, right?"]
Some, closely associated with the Constitution itself, have felt otherwise.
"The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite."
-- James Madison--1788
"The government of the United States is a definite government, confined to specified objects. It is not like state governments, whose powers are more general. Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government."
--James Madison--1794
"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."
--James Madison--1794
"The power to regulate commerce among the several States" can not include a power to construct roads and canals, and to improve the navigation of water courses in order to facilitate, promote, and secure such commerce with a latitude of construction departing from the ordinary import of the terms strengthened by the known inconveniences which doubtless led to the grant of this remedial power to Congress.
To refer the power in question to the clause "to provide for common defense and general welfare" would be contrary to the established and consistent rules of interpretation, as rendering the special and careful enumeration of powers which follow the clause nugatory and improper. Such a view of the Constitution would have the effect of giving to Congress a general power of legislation instead of the defined and limited one hitherto understood to belong to them"
--James Madison--1817
"It is not by the consolidation, or concentration of powers, but by their distribution, that good government is effected."
--Thomas Jefferson--1821
"Were we directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap, we should soon want bread."
--Thomas Jefferson--1821
"I wish to see maintained that wholesome distribution of powers established by the Constitution for the limitation of both [the State and General governments], and never to see all offices transferred to Washington where, further withdrawn from the eyes of the people, they may more secretly be bought and sold as at market."
--Thomas Jefferson--1823
Also:
"Government is instituted to protect property of every sort; as well that which lies in the various rights of individuals, as that which the term particularly expresses. This being the end of government, which impartially secures to every man, whatever is his own."
--James Madison--1792
"To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it."
