The Policy Side of Obama's Public Financing Opt-Out

| Fri Jun. 20, 2008 8:00 AM PDT

As David and Jonathan have mentioned, Barack Obama has announced that he will opt-out of the public financing system for the general election.

It seems obvious, as David noted in his article, that Obama's decision was made for political expediency and was not the principled stand his campaign is hoping people will see it as. The media has done a good job of covering the political side of this story. Obama is making a politically expedient decision and essentially going back on his "Yes" answer to a questionnaire that asked whether he would forgo private financing if his opponents did the same. But the other part of this story, the policy side, is sorely missing.

Continued From Above

Obama may be making excuses when he says the public financing system is broken, but he's right. It seems inconceivable that the Supreme Court will allow limits on Swift Boat-type political speech anytime soon. 527s and their ilk are likely to remain legal, and to continue impacting elections. Money will still matter. To expect otherwise wouldn't just be naive, it'd also be missing half of the point.

The difficulty is not that there is money in politics or that people pay money to put political ads on television. The problem arises when politicians become dependent on money from certain lobbyists or bundlers or PACs or individuals. Obama has taken a big step towards rectifying that conflict of interest by refusing money from PACs and federal registered lobbyists. Just as important, he has asked major Democratic donors to avoid funding outside groups and give money exclusively through the campaign.

Taken together, the focus on small donors, the refusal of PAC and lobbyist money, and the attack on independent Democratic groups point to an entirely new way of funding a campaign. Obama has already been praised by the right for understanding and valuing free market solutions and for saying that government isn't always the answer to social and economic problems. In this case, the Obama campaign seems to have accepted that money is in politics to stay, and that attempts to remove its influence will inevitably be subverted by forces like the 527s. By opting out of the public financing system, Obama is acknowledging that money will always play a crucial role in American politics. But by discouraging donations to independent groups, focusing on small donors, and refusing PAC and lobbyist money, he's also trying to insure that money plays the right role in American politics.

From one concerned citizen of U.S.A,

Dear American Voters, reporters, media. professionals, political parties, and presidential Nominees,

Hon. Senator McCain and Obama, besides each having many attributes and characteristics.

The critical differences between the two of these presidential presumptive nominees in my opinion are as under:

1. Presidential "Temperament and Caliber".
2. Little Washington "insider Versus outsider" experience.
3. "Vision and mission" for our nation future rather than past.
4. American policies, " first U.S.A Centric" than any other country [ ies ] centric.

In my professional opinion Senator Obama leads in all above qualities and attributes.

Senator Obama and his administration along with congress will address all the critical current and future domestic and foreign issues, challenges, and opportunities in coming the years.

Our citizens have and follow attributes as under:

" Family, Friends, Fellows, Faith, Funds, Foundation [s], Fun, with Freedom & Fairness and without Fear, Favor, & Failure" .

Dear Americans, please do not allow yourself be duped, seduced, and brain washed this time ].

PS: Please talk about the " Presidential Temperament And Caliber " of our presumptive presidential Nominees. We do talk about the "Judicial Temperament" of our Supreme Court Justices nominees and so far we have failed to talk about the " Presidential Temperament " of our presumptive presidential nominees. The " Presidential Temperament " is the ultimate and in my opinion only requirement of our president as that effects every living soul here and around the world.

Thanks again.

Wrong approach. Obama is a double face opportunistic polititian. He 'would throu his grandmother under the truck for the price'. Please see David Brooks article today in the NYT about 'The Two Obamas'.

I stopped reading Mother Jones since it started attacking Hillary Clinton and favoring slizzy Obama.

Of course Connie because taking money from 1.5 million small donors and refusing to get all his money from a handful lobbyists and PACs is a sure sigh of corruption right? And Hillarys record on the war and corporate pandering when it came to bankruptcy reform and NAFTA were above reproach right? Never mind that your complaints are easily defeated with logic just continue insulting the only good candidate left who has a shot at winning.

It isn't private financing when the public at large sends donations. That is how the publics candidates are suppose to be financed.

Private financing is when large corporations and the elite are doing the financing.

If Obama hadn't shown he was smart enough take take the huge money advantage available to him, he would've shown he was too dumb to be president.
And if he hadn't shown he was tough enough to take the (tiny) political hit for going back on a very early, and half-assed, campaign pledge, he would've shown he wasn't tough enough to win the presidency.
And if you think this proves that Obama will do ANYTHING to win, well, you might want to consider that it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to leap to your keyboard and remove all doubt. ANYTHING and SOME THINGS are two very different things.
All you hand wringers have gotta stop sobbin' around.

What kind of chicken are you?
