McCain's Adjustable Debate Standard
"We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved," John McCain said on Wednesday, explaining his decision to suspend his campaign and not participate in the first presidential debate. A McCain aide told Reuters, "If the package is reached and the country is saved, there will be a debate. But if there's no deal, how can you get on a plane...for a debate?"
On Friday morning, McCain's campaign released this statement:
He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Representative Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans. The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the Senator will travel to the debate this afternoon.
Note the adjustment in standards. First, the McCain camp said deal or no debate. Two days later, the position was, negotiations are under way so let's debate. Was this change an act of decisive leadership or a necessary political flip-flop? Maybe Jim Lehrer, the moderator of Friday night's debate, can ask him that.

The McCain camp are well aware the challenge the debate presents to old Johnny. The country will witness McCaint's exhibiting the first stages of dementia. The implosion of the McCain/Palin ticket begins tonight. The following debates may not be required.
DC,
Who knows with McCain?
He has been all over the spectrum on nearly every issue.
He is not balanced and his demeanor no assurance of his being level headed.
McCain would run the country in the same way he runs his campaign - insane - knee jerk and unpredictable even going by his own words.
When I was growing up in a inner-city neighborhood we had a saying for a person afraid of a fight--albeit it was broken english, we would say: "HE/SHE Don't Want None"-This is pretty much the case with John McCain vs Obama. McCain "Don't Want None"
Vegas odds are 8 to 5 McFailin blows his top by the 3rd question. The odds are even better that he brings up the fact that he was a prisoner of war during the first question.
I guess being a prisoner makes you qualified to be president......Charles Manson should be a lock for the GOP in 2012.
This debate/no debate/debate flippity-flop will cost McCain the election.
If there is one trait that explodes his message more than anything else, it's fear. And he blinked.

First of all if there is one thing that John McCain is it's a man of integrity and one who loves this country and has already fought for us and will continue to do so regardless of how he looks to anyone. He is lead by his conscience and it tells him to do what is right. Yes, all hands should have been on deck and the senate democrats were scrambling to get the deal signed before McCain got their yesterday just for polical reasons when they were'nt even close to a deal, especially when the House wasn't ready. Just another example of the democratic congress and their do nothing history and putting their own interests before country.
"Country First"
In the words of Jefferson Airplane:
Look what's happening on the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Hey I'm dancing down the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Ain't it amazing all the people I meet
Got a revolution Got to revolution
One generation got old
One generation got soul
This generation got no destination to hold
Pick up the cry
Calling John McCain a war hero is like dropping a short circuit across your brain that makes you stop thinking critically and instead starts conjuring up all kinds of excuses for his terrible and sometimes illegal behavior.
We need to stop calling this guy a "war hero" and start calling him a putz, because that's what he is. He's phony, he's a liar, and his horrible judgment got people killed, INCLUDING some of the things he told the VC while he was being a "war hero".
That's just the truth.

Nathan,
I don't question the patriotism of either McCain or Obama. Both put their country first. The issues that concern me are judgment and leadership ability. Senator McCain's erratic behavior and inconsistent statements about the economy, particularly in the past two weeks, raise some real concerns for me.
I put more trust in the abilities of "No Drama Obama."
The debates are nothing but
a "sham". The League of
Women Voters have long since
wash their hands from the
Presidential debates since
or before the 2000 election.
The failure to allow "third
party candidates" to debate
is one reason. The debates are "paid for" by the"political parties".
@ Thomas: The debates are "paid for" by the"political parties".
Not only that, the rules for who participates are controlled by the FEC.
Is it necessary to point out who populates on the FEC?

Democrats & Republicans, would you suppose?
And what is the likelihood that Democrats are going to allow Ralph Nader or Cynthia McKinney to challenge their candidate in debate, if they're in a position to prevent it from happening? Or that the Republicans are going to allow Bob Barr, or Chuck Baldwin of the religious conservative Constitution Party, to challenge theirs?
"The election process is controlled by the powerful elite to make sure that neither candidate of the two major parties will challenge the status quo."
"There is no real choice between the two major parties and their nominees, only the rhetoric varies. The amazingly long campaign is designed to make sure the real issues are ignored."

You really have to wonder what the heck they're going to say that
a) we haven't heard them say before
b) is of any value to America in any way.
If the other candidates were on the stage, it would be a completely different story. But that difference is what frightens the beejeezus out of the Dems and GOP. They can't tolerate a free exchange of ideas because it makes them look like the corrupted tools they are.
The PDC is passing itself off as fair. They're fair like Faux is "fair". They have Hannity AND Colmbes.
If the candidates actually had any integrity, they would boycott the debates until all candidates who are on the ballot get a microphone.
Think we'll see it in our lifetime?

watsamatter Wexler?
Don't you think the bought-&-paid-for media talking-heads will ask 'em a question like: "Why didn't anybody take Ron Paul's warnings about a pending economic collapse seriously?", in the midst of all the softballs they're going to be tossing?
Or:
"Given the dire outlook for the US economy, how can we afford or justify keeping nearly 300,000 US military personnel on station in over 140 foreign countries?"
You are right "country first". This includes the protection of the American public who have suffered from massive corporate greed, and we the public and the Democratic party say enough. No corporate welfare. Fix the mess yourselves for in the end it is the corporations and banking interests who will once again reap in the dough when good times return. Let those that broke this system fix it. When corporate and banking interests see to it that the American public has money in his pockets, it will get saved and spent and the corporate thieves will begin to rise again.
You are right "country first", for we the people not corporate America. America IS WE THE PEOPLE!
Show me...
I'll see your Paul and raise ya a Nader!
Nope, I'm not which of them warned about this economic crisis, and I'll bet they don't actually agree on what the solution is, but they both DID warn about it and were right. And that's a damn sight better than McCain. Of course, Obama was still in diapers back then or was doin' some organizin' or something'.

We tried 8 years of confused and incompetent, it didn't work too well did it. With John McSame all we would be doing is trying more of the same. Rape and pillage the working class for benefits to the uber wealthy. Trickle down does not work. Never has and never will. Why do working class repubs vote against their own self interests? They can't even make the connection that by voting for Bush, they are responsible for the mess our country is in. They put him and his cronies in power.
Anyone who makes less than $250,000 a year and still votes republican is like a chicken voting for Colonol Sanders.
