The Right's Final Attack: Obama is a Black Muslim, Anti-Christian Socialist Plotting with an Evil Jewish Billionaire

With less than three weeks to go before Election Day, time is running out on the rightwing effort to delegitimize Barack Obama. At the last debate between John McCain and Obama, McCain finally confronted his opponent directly with the Bill Ayers charge. It was a half-hearted effort: he noted that he didn't "care about an old washed-up terrorist" but insisted that "we need to know the full extent" of Obama's relationship with the former Weather Underground radical, who has since become an education expert. Though McCain succeeded in appeasing conservatives who demanded he pounce on the Ayers matter, the polling evidence has indicated that whining about Obama's casual association with Ayers has not yet become a winning tactic for McCain and Republicans trying to depict Obama as an untrustworthy pol outside the American mainstream. But Ayers is not the only ammo for rightwingers striving to brand Obama as anti-American. Various conservatives are pushing other lines of attack to achieve this goal. And as they mount various ploys, their desperation is showing. Here are some of the last-minute blasts being waged by conservatives hoping to convince voters that they ought to be afraid--very afraid--of Obama:
Mohamed Atta's Driver License. An outfit called the National Republican Trust Political Action Committee has sent out an email to potential conservative donors calling Obama "dangerous" and boasting that it has hit on the killer issue that "will nail him." That issue: Obama supports allowing undocumented aliens to obtain driver's licenses. This means, the group says, that the next Mohamed Atta could obtain a valid driver's license--and somehow make use of it in a plot to kill thousands of Americans. "We are days away from our new TV ad exposing Obama's support for driver's licenses for illegals," the email says. Message: Obama doesn't understand the dangers facing the country and will help terrorists conspiring to destroy the United States.
Obama is a Socialist. McCain came close to saying this at that final debate, when he derided Obama for wanting to "spread the wealth" and maintained that Obama's plan to raise taxes on the well-to-do to help finance tax cuts for the middle class was "class warfare." But McCain did not use the S-word. Others are not so reticent. Richard Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com and a founder of the modern conservative movement, proposes that Obama be slammed in a simple manner. "The Obama economic policy," he says, "can be summed up in two words: Marxism/Socialism." In Viguerie's view, the McCain campaign and others must reveal that Obama wants to "re-make America along the lines of socialist countries in Europe, most of which are headed toward collapse." Drop the S-bomb, he urges. Message: Obama is a commie who hates the rich and wants to kill the American Dream.
Obama Is a Secret Muslim Plotting With an Evil Billionaire. Human Events, a leading conservative magazine, sent out a promotional email the other day for an anti-Obama book co-written by Floyd Brown, a conservative activist infamous for having cooked up the Willie Horton ad during the 1988 presidential election. The email notes that there are "many Islamofascists who are sworn to the destruction of America" who are "actively campaigning for Obama" and that Muslims would demand and receive "special rights" from a President Obama. The email asks, "Being a Black Muslim doesn't disqualify [Obama] from running for President, so why won't he be honest about it?" In other words, yep, he's a covert Muslim. But beyond circulating this canard, the email claims that George Soros, the Hungarian-born billionaire financier who has supported Democratic and liberal causes, is "planning to sack the US economy, make himself billions richer, and put Obama in the White House marching to his mad tune." Message: A black Muslim in league with an evil Jewish billionaire--you do the math.
Obama Is Fronting for Islamic Jihadists. Writing in The Washington Times this week, former Reagan Pentagon official Frank Gaffney, charges that Obama's campaign has received "between $30 million and $100 million" from the Mideast, Africa and other places [where] Islamists are active." He asserts it "seems likely" that "these funds come not only from Wahhabis, Muslim Brotherhood types and jihadists of other stripes but from non-U.S. citizens." (His evidence? Don't be so picky.) Gaffney adds that "Obama hopes to win the White House by relying, in part, on the Jihadist vote." He writes: "The next three weeks afford the American people--and the media, the courts and the [Federal Elections Commission]--an opportunity to get to the bottom of Barack Obama's ties to and affinity for jihadists who have their own reasons for relishing his promise of 'change]' for this country. Unfortunately, the change his Islamists supporters have in mind is for global theocratic rule under Shariah, and the end of our constitutional, democratic government." Message: Obama will destroy Christianity in the United States and enslave you within an Islamic dictatorship.

This is heady stuff. And there are, no doubt, more 11th hour assaults in the works. Right-wing bloggers have promoted a British news story reporting that an African-American poet and friend of Obama's grandfather in Hawaii--when Obama was being raised by his grandparents--wrote pornography and engaged in sex with a 13-year-old girl. (Stop everything: Obama, when he was a teenager, received advice on how to be a black man from a pervert!) And one right-wing blogger has been pushing the conspiracy theory that it was Bill Ayers who actually wrote Obama's book Dreams From My Father.
For months, the McCain camp and conservatives have attempted to persuade voters that Obama is not one of them, not a truly loyal American--that, for instance, he pals around with domestic terrorists, as Governor Sarah Palin put it. (And the McCain campaign and the Republican Party this week launched a robocall operation that tells potential voters that they "need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the US Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans.") If the recent polling is accurate, this anti-Obama crusade has not tilted the electorate toward McCain. But one final push--with or without references to the Reverend Jeremiah Wright--will be coming from rightwingers anxious to prevent an Obama win. In a letter sent to supporters, Donald Wildmon, chairman of the American Family Association, declares, "If the liberals win the upcoming election, America as we have known it will no longer exist. This country that we love, founded on Judeo-Christian values, will cease to exist and will be replaced by a secular state hostile to Christianity."
Some of these attacks do seem silly and are probably designed more to squeeze money out of paranoid rightwing contributors than to sway swing voters. (Don't vote for Obama because he will let Soros loot the US treasury?) But they are something of a warning: if Obama wins, this is the tenor of the conservative opposition he will face right out of the box: sensationalized, racialized, apocalyptic, and crazy.

I would love nothing more than to see Obama's Chief of Homeland Security start rounding up these firebrands and sending them off to Gitmo. Obviously that won't happen, but could you just imagine how much better of a place the US would be?
Don't get me wrong, I don't mean the morons who believe the stuff they are spoonfed, but the leaders of these attempts to defame the name and character of our next president.
What scares me is that there are people out there who are stupid enough to believe this sort of schlock and for whom some random person saying it on TV or in an article is plenty proof.
Seriously, how does a brain get so damaged? I'm far more concerned about people who make and believe these statements running around the country.
Millions of conservative voters looked evil in the eye in 2000 and 2004 and then voted for it in the likes of Bush and Cheney. But someone who offers a glimmer of change in an otherwise bleak landscape, well they obviously must be the anti-christ or some other evil doer, since they're certainly not one of them. I predicted this would happen. The radical right is like a pit of mad vipers, cornered and ready to strike. We have not seen dirty like we will see in in the next few weeks. I predict that when Obama wins, the Republican party will begin to rip right down the middle. The radical right will not take this loss well. My worst fear is that all of this ridiculous rhetoric will stir up some really bad actions from the followers.

More bad news, Ivanhoe ... America has been "socialist" since before FDR. It's just not called that for political reasons. Actually, if you could present a rational argument for calling what we have now "capitalist", I'd gladly listen to it.
As Mr. Ferguson noted, when the Feds buy a stake in the nation's banks ... that's socialist. When your taxes and mine go toward feeding the poor ... that's socialist. When those same taxes are used to purchase bad loans, that's quite socialist.
I could go on, but suffice to say that Obama isn't even the most aggressive proponent of offering a helping hand to those that have less under the guise of government. You could even look at Reagan's "trickle down economics" as a form of socialism, if you recognized that our tax dollars went to those businesses that were supposed to profit from them and then trickle the benefits down to the rest of us who paid for them. There is no country in the world today that is a capitalist country, and I'd argue that there never has been. All countries, with the exception of the purely communist countries, are a blend of capitalism and socialism, because that's what it takes to make it all work. Libertarianism would never work in its pure form, and even communism has proved to be extremely difficult to maintain.
Americans should get used to the idea that it takes many doctrines, a fair shake and a group effort to run a society, and socialism will always be a big part of that.
PS: We haven't "nationalized" the banks, either ... we're using socialist principals in an attempt to keep them from completely crashing. Nationalization requires that the government controls the institutions ... and that's not a part of the deal, here. Our tax dollars are going to prop them up, but we will have no say in how they are run. Not "nationalism" ... "socialism".
I just listened to Hardball--Matthew's guest was a Congresswoman from Minnesota (a newby to Congress).
The Congresswoman said Obama's ties to Ayers meant he was anti american. She also said that leftist were anti american and Matthews/press should do an investigation into the Congressmen who lean left and find out just how anti american they are. Matthews was clearly stunned by the Palin-like Congresswoman--he said it took him back to the '50s during the Mccarthy period.
As I listened to this uneducated woman with no sense of history--I wondered why Matthews didn't bring up the very close connections of Palin and the anti american org. (AIP). After the outrageous Congresswoman left--a spokeswoman for Obama came on and she failed to bring up any of McCain's and Palin's ties to anti americans.
This is John Kerry's Swiftboating all over again--I think Obama thinks taking the high road will keep him in the lead. But, I am finding a lot of people I know feel the story about Ayers has truth and they are worried about Obama. A couple of these people are Democrats who have never voted Rep.They are voting straight Republican this time around. Anything I say to them falls on deaf ears. I think the Ayers story is working and Obama needs to fight back with Palin's AIP, McCain's Iran contra contacts, Keating 5, Gordon Libby, etc.
The polls may not be showing how afraid people are getting of Obama.

Getting back to the nutters and the various claims they are spewing...one has to wonder WHO BELIEVES THIS STUFF? Certainly some of these fabrications are knowingly created to provoke base emotions and then spread by persons addicted to hate. I've accidentally received some of the Far Right email and I notice that it can start off rationally and then, as if the writer is stoking his own fire, it descends into epithets and crazy chant-like accusations. I feel that the religious fundamentalists in THIS country who will believe everything they're told are part of the story, but not the whole story. Sometimes I just like to imagine how history will talk about this period.
I keep wondering ... what do people who are troubled by Ayers think is going to happen if Obama gets elected? Do they think he'll single-handedly dismantle the government? Maybe that he'll start bombing the Pentagon? Or selling nuclear secrets to "the enemy"?
The same question goes to those who give the AIP weight ... WTF? Even the imperial presidency of Dick Cheney has not resulted in any substantial change in the way America works ... although there are some pretty deep scars. I am seriously confused. Don't Jihadists believe that God will come down on their side and smite their enemies while rewarding the faithful? Aren't those people solidly behind Silly Sarah Palin? Didn't they vote for Bush in 2000 and 2004 and Dan Quayle in 1988 and 1992? Why would they support Barack Ocain this year - instead of John McBama and his running mate Silly Sarah?

When I hear about these attacks and then I watch the mob frenzy that they have created among the lowest denominator of the far right I can only think: If anything happens to President Obama, we will only have to look as far as Palin and McCain to find the guilty party. It makes me sad and sick to think that this is what Amercian politics has become...nothing more than a witch hunt.
The problem with our country right now is it is turning into a fascist government. Google fascism or look it up in the dictionary. Government controlled by corps. Seems like we need a little socialism where the people benefit a little.
Here's what I'm waiting for because Karl Rove is not dead yet. He or one of his minions will find a woman who has a biracial child, pay her a forever life sustaining amount of money, and she will swear to the world that Obama is the father. If it happens, it will be the first days of November before Obama or any fact check organization can research it. The mentally deranged faction of the GOP would cut their mothers' throats to stop Obama or any other Democrat from reaching the White House. I pay I am wrong.
The most probable Islamic terrorist is George Bush. Consider the facts:
1) He has been close friends with the Bin Laden family for many years. The say that they have disowned Osama, but there really is no proof of that claim. Osama gets a lot of money for Saudi Arabia, perhaps they still support him.
2) After the 9-11 attacks, he allowed Saudi citizens to leave the US without even questioning them to see if they had anything to with the attack. Nobody else was allowed to even fly at that time, much less potential enemy agents.
3) Everything that Bush has done in the past 8 years has damaged our country and national security. He has run up a massive debt, alienated us from our allies, got us in a holy war against Muslims in the Middle East, crippled out military, and ruined our economy. He has given our enemies more than they could have ever dreamed of getting.
4) He has repeatedly attacked the basic Constitutional basis of our country and violated many of our laws.
All in all, for any Republican to suggest that Barrack Obama is associated with terrorist is rather amazing.
Its a reality that fear can manipulate the masses and of course we are all scared that it will happen. Guess what? McCain also has socialist leanings. In debate # 2 McCain told us that when he is president he will use taxpayer money to pay off people's mortgaes for them, thus using government to buy people's houses for them.
