Corn on "Hardball": Still Debunking the Saddam-9/11 Connection

| Thu Mar. 12, 2009 7:57 PM PDT

On Wednesday night, Chris Matthews interviewed--make that, skewered--Ari Fleischer on Hardball, grilling him on George W. Bush's legacy: a lousy war in Iraq sold to the public with false information and a lousy economy. At the end of the long segment, Fleischer said

But after September 11, having been hit once, how could we take a chance that Saddam might not strike again?

Strike again? Was Fleischer pushing the canard that Saddam Hussein had been involved in the 9/11 attacks? Matthews was busy closing out the segment and didn't focus on this remark. But after watching the interview later, he decided this comment deserved attention.

Enter former Reagan Pentagon official Frank Gaffney and me. We were invited on Thursday's show to discuss Fleischer's comment and the claim--to which some neocons still cling--that Saddam was in cahoots with the 9/11 mass-murderers. The 9/11 commission said there was no link between Saddam and 9/11, but, yes, Gaffney still contends that Saddam was behind al Qaeda's attack. His evidence? Gaffney cited circumstantial reports, a book by discredited neocon Douglas Feith, and, essentially, his own hunch. Here's what happened:

Totally Awesome

David last evening was awesome in his robust exchange with Frank Gaffney about Ari Freischer's constant lies about Saddam Hussein's role in the attacks on Sept 11. David would not let Frank continue to spread these mis-truth and call him out every time Gaffney would try and spread more falsehoods of the Bush Administration. Great job David!

GOP lies

Wasn't it Cheney who stated that the longer and louder you repeat the lie the more it becomes believed by the masses? And the bigger and more outrageous the lie - the better. And if you tell everyone that the people who report the news are deliberately withholding information that helps your cause it makes the more outrageous more believable. Then when the news reporters try to debunk your lie they have to repeat the lie giving it even more exposure. And of course those who debunk your lie are your enemies anyway so they are not to be believed. This creates a climate where [those who support you - often on a "lesser evil" basis] you can not tell a lie to a large segment of the population - who will believe anything you say. I know the GOP isn't willing to put it to the test: but I believe that close to half the people would believe the earth is flat and that the round earth theory is a media conspiracy - if someone like Rush Limbaugh or Michael Wiener said so on their show. Being debunked by the media would be expected - since they are engaged in a ruthless coverup. How else do you explain the rumor - believed by millions - that BHO was a foreign national born outside the USA. The more the Democrats and liberals responded to this fantasy, the stronger the belief among a large group of people that such rumors had a basis of truth. "Methinks that you protest too much".

Splendid, now if in the

Splendid, now if in the future the media could just ask these questions before we get into war rather then wait till it's acceptable.

I watched the exchange both

I watched the exchange both nights. Chris Matthews was lousy. He let Fleischer go on and on with the lies and challenged him very little. The night David was on was just as bad. It wasn't David's fault but Chris Matthews once again letting the neocon Gaffney hog all the time. Everytime David tried to make his points he was either interrupted by the very rude, lying, chickenhawk, neocon Gaffney. If he wasn't being interrupted by Gaffney, then it was Matthews interrupting him. Had David been able to get a word in edgewise he would have scored many points and debunked the lies Gaffney was telling. Those republicans are the scum of the earth with their constant lies and willingness to invade sovereign countries for their own personal greed. Make no mistake if McCain had been elected Iran was going to be next.
