GOP Hispanic Outreach FAIL

| Fri Mar. 6, 2009 11:12 AM PST

From the conservative website Right Wing News (via The Next Right):

I was talking to a very credible Capitol Hill source (who wishes to remain anonymous) today and that person told me a story that just blew my mind...

He told me the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's 19th Annual Legislative Conference will be taking place next week in DC.

Here's the kicker: supposedly, the Democrats have 20 senators scheduled to attend various events and receptions. The Republicans? Are you ready for this? They have no senators currently scheduled to attend. Zero. Nada. Zilch.

You know what's great about this? This is easy minority outreach for Republicans. It's not like they're being asked to go visit the NAACP or speak to an immigrants' rights march. This is the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, an organization filled with business leaders who presumably have wealth, oppose regulations, and want to see lower corporate taxes. And yet, when the Right Wing News author followed up with the HCC (my acronym), the staff there confirmed that Republicans were taking a pass.

Hispanics are the fastest growing minority in the control and will soon dominate politics in the western United States. Effective Hispanic outreach by the Dems and a complete lack of attention by Republicans could mean long-term Democratic control of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada, all current or former key swing states.

Update: Ryan Grim reports that Republican lawmakers have been embarrassed into attending the HCC conference! That was quick.

Seriously. This site is clearly compromised. Let's stop writing articles about what the GOP is doing wrong and telling them how to do it better. I mean, honestly, if I go to a job interview and the other guy stinks like booze, you think I'm going to tell him to go gargle with some tap water? Now, lets assume the other guy is a real asshole who gets his kicks by stealing my girlfriend and then accusing me of being a girlfriend stealer? Should I still want to give him a hand? This is ridiculous. Let them fail. Let them drive any sane conservative 300 miles from the base so that all that is left is Team Sarah. Otherwise, 2010 is going to roll around and these jerks are going to be back to their old tricks, and you're going to tell them how to seal it up. Slow Clap.

The GOP in California

When Pete Wilson was running for his second term as governor of California, he faced a strong challenge from state Treasurer Kathleen Brown (daughter of Pat Brown and sister of Jerry Brown). Wilson was in bad shape and desperately needed a game-changing ploy. He decided to make opposition to illegal immigration the centerpiece of his campaign and supported a ballot initiative to deny services to undocumented state residents. With some help from Brown's rather weak campaign, Wilson rode the issue to a second term. In the process, however, he alienated the Hispanic community in the state, making the GOP synonymous with border patrols, immigration raids, and disrespect for Spanish speakers. It was nothing personal with Wilson. He just wanted to win in the worst way. The California GOP burned its bridges with potentially recruitable Hispanics with culturally conservative views, and almost none of them joined the Republican Party.

In my view, it was a better

In my view, it was a better call to report this post facto. Sheesh - as a boxer telegraphing a punch like that, you'd be down the first round. I hope the staff is chastened by this incident. Best, D
