Information is still coming in on James von Brunn, the suspect in Wednesday's shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.
James Ridgeway has the latest.
Officials at the Holocaust Museum have confirmed one of the guards involved in the shooting, whom the museum identified as Stephen Tyrone Johns, died at the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound from the suspect, James von Brunn.

Police have now confirmed that James von Brunn is the suspect in today's shooting at the Holocaust Museum. Von Brunn apparently lives in Easton, Maryland, which some years ago boasted a chapter of the Klu Klux Klan, according to Leonard Zeskind, whose book Blood Politics charts the history of the far right.
From his rather prolific writings, von Brunn's thinking seems to be indebted to two prominent white supremacists: Willis Carto of a now-defunct group called Liberty Lobby, and William Pierce, leader of the National Alliance. (Pierce died in 2002.) At least one of Brunn's books, Kill the Best Gentiles, was published by Noontide Press, which was run by Carto in the 1960s. Noontide later folded into the Institute of Historical Review, one of the major groups that denied that the Holocaust ever happened, according to Zeskind. In the acknowledgement to his book, von Brunn also lists Francis Parker Yockey, a longtime anti-Semite who was promoted by Carto, and Revello Oliver, an associate of Pierce's. In the 1960s, both Oliver and Pierce supported the presidential campaign of Alabama governor George Wallace, a staunch segregationist backed by Klu Klux Klan groups. In the 1990s, Pierce set up a National Alliance headquarters in southwestern Virginia.
In brief, the neo-Nazis with whom von Brunn associates himself in his writings believe the Jews control the "mud people." The "mud people" are all the non-white Aryans who, in the view of the racists, ought to be kicked out of the country. A sample of von Brunn's writing (titled "Hitler's Worst Mistake: He Didn't Gas the Jews") makes some of these connections.

Early reports are saying that the man suspected of a shooting at the Holocaust Museum today is James Von Brunn, born in the 1920s. The shooting comes just a week after President Obama delivered a forceful speech in Germany on the Holocaust. A quick scan of what seems to be Von Brunn’s website reveals some anti-Semitic writings.
Whether or not the gunman has ties to white supremacy groups remains murky at this point. The Holocaust Museum is not a traditional target of far-right groups. They detest it, of course, but as far as I know there have only been two actual protests staged against it. Both involved Louis Carto’s Liberty Lobby, the right-wing populist newspaper which is now defunct.
More recently the far right has concentrated its venom on Hispanics, through militia-type organizations like the Minutemen.
From his website and writings, von Brunn sounds very much like a national socialist or neo-Nazi. His basic writings rely on the notorious Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a book that purports to set forth a secret grand Jewish plot to control the world. This book was hatched by the Czar’s secret police during the early days of the Russian revolution, and was popularized in the US by Henry Ford, founder of the car company: Ford salesmen handed it out to their customers.
The Protocols form the base of much far-right thinking. Books such as the Turner Diaries by William Pierce, which forecast Timothy McVeigh's attack on Oklahoma City, are steeped in the world of the Protocols.

In a tirade posted in a in a Christian Separatist group in Yahoo, he pushed a 9/11 conspiracy theory:

He was the spy who stole U.S. Treasury printing plates, giving them to the Soviets which printed millions (billions?) of U.S. dollars, which ended up in the pockets of "gassed" Jews. White also was the prime mover behind The International Monetary Fund, and The World Bank –designed to help bankers at the expense of American taxpayers. His friend Alger Hiss, another Soviet spy, working for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was architect of the United Nation’s Charter. White’s boss, Henry Morganthau, Jew, whose infamous Morganthau Plan was designed to starve to death the entire German nation following WWII, was FDR’s confidant. From this cess-pool of Jews and traitors came the FTAA which in 1994, with Congressional blessings, changed its name to WTO (World Trade Organization).
In the Ron Paul for President group on Yahoo, he complained that a Harvard professor had supposedly called for killing all white people. He also posted a piece saying that Hitler's worst mistake was that "he didn't gas the Jews."
But he also had artistic ambitions. On another website, von Brunn posted this message:

How anyone can deny the Holocaust after fighting in wwII is beyond me. Every time this happens it is tragic, but it brings the issue of domestic terrorism more to light.
The guard that died is a hero, that's the best way to go. May he go with God.

This guy is not as unusual as many may assume. He is not "mainstream" for sure but he is mainstream for neo-nazis, of which perhaps 500,000 exist in the USA alone. What makes him stand out is that he violently acted on his emotional illness. It is not getting any better either. As time progresses, (and especially now with a Black president and an Puerto Rican woman S.C. Justice), more and more of these refugees from 'Hogan's Heros' are likely to go postal.
The only bright spot (if there is any) is that I think its ultimately better for society to well realize that we have such groups and they are not that isolated and certainly not harmless.

Respectfully, if God has a 'chosen people' its the world's children and due solely to their innocence. People (on the other hand) get to choose God as their champion. There are many varied ways to accomplish this, circumcision NOT being one example. However, where people have become understandably confused is due to the fact that learning became a religious obligation among all Jewish males in around 1,200-BCE, this has created a well evolved tribe of Judah that serves God's core purpose, that being evolution in all its possible forms. People like Von Brunn can't reconcile themselves to the fact that Jews enjoy a relatively advanced culture and have stations of success and prestige. This infuriates such Aryan supremacists because the only explanation they can proffer is that the Jews steal their their way to the top.
Going back to the Jesus stories, the early proto-Christians well realized that they would not be able to sell their religion to Gentiles so long as the Jews selling it were affluent. Thus became the religious basis for anti-materialism and the world's first recorded example of a communist community (the Qumran community).

For years ongoing the Palestinian-Arab leadership repeated the same mantra: End the so called “occupation” and life would return to normal. The Israelis were perhaps the only ones who knew this was not true but partly under international pressure, they vacated Gaza anyway, including neighborhoods that had been continually and exclusively Jewish for the past 3,200 years.
The result was 8,000 anti-personnel rockets and mortars, being shot at Israeli civilians, each one a separate war crime under international law.

Much to the dismay of the hopelessly romantic (generally white) supporters of the Palestinian-Arab cause, the genocide of the indigenous American population has nothing in common with the fulfillment of the charter provisions of the League of Nations Mandate on Palestine, to create a “Jewish National Homeland” which was/is supported by longstanding international law.
The American Indian tribes did not believe that people owned land but rather that the land owned the people. Thus, they would have not objected to immigration of whites or blacks or Chinese into North America, as there was plenty of space for everyone to thrive. The Indians merely wished to remain unmolested. It was the colonial displacement of these tribes and their ultimate genocide wherein the crimes were committed.

Israel by contrast was the outcropping of WW1 wherein all the local Arab tribes won their independence from the non Arabic Turks. In this same time-frame, the Jews of the Middle East were also guaranteed their independence (only fair) but because the Jews had been scattered throughout the Turkish Ottoman Empire, it was necessary that they be migrated together and reconstituted into one nation, the “Jewish National Homeland”. As members of the League of Nations, Egypt, Persia (Iran) and Iraq all legally agreed to observe this mandate. This was the age of Muslim intellectualism. Today we have the age of Muslim religious extremism.
Following WW2, the already legally mandated (yet unnamed) nation of Israel took on an additional role, to become a home and refuge for the entire world’s supply of oppressed Jews and refugees of Europe’s war of genocide against them. Do not forget that every single Arab nation with the exception of Jordan had sided with the Nazis in WW2. This, to spite the fact that less than 20 years earlier, England, France and the USA had liberated these Arabs from the Turks and their German allies in WW1.
By contrast, American Indians enlisted in and fought bravely in the U.S. Armed Forces in WW’s 1 and 2. Your comparison between these populations is just one more meritless bumper-sticker.

How monotheism muddies the water! I can accept that the Semites are YHWH's chosen people. I am not Jewish or Arab myself, but the notion that there might be only one God (and He chose somebody else) is rather offensive to me. Didn't Amateratsu, the Sun Goddess choose Nippon? I believe that my lineage descent is from Lord Frey of the Vanir. This doesn't mean that I see any purpose in Dissing YHWH or Amateratsu, just that I know that Men make their Heros into Gods and the notion that there might be only one Universal Diety and It chose those guys just doesn't fit with what I know of reality, especially when I know My God and don't need somebody else's version and dogma put on me and mine. This resulted in Palestinian children in Gaza having to eat grass to survive.

I fail to say it because it lacks truth. It is a WAR ZONE and not as declared by Israel who departed to encourage a peaceful relationship. As declared by Hamas. When faced with an active border war, the attacked party (in this case Israel) has limited choices and none of them are good or friendly. While Hamas was democratically elected, it was also democratically DISBANDED by the Palestinian Authority President, Abu Mazen, as WAS HIS VESTED AUTHORITY under the Palestinian-Arab constitution. Hamas responded by throwing several Fatah leaders off Gaza rooftops to their death. They then declared an active shooting war against Israel and abrogated the Oslo Accord responsibilities. The Torah is not my religious scripture and I will not be defending each and every thing said therein. But neither should each and every passage be automatically reanimated thousands of years after it was written. And in completely different contexts.

We tend to remember the Jewish holocaust more vividly then several others because it did not begin in the 1940's and did not end when Hitler's bunker was stormed. It merely climaxed during WW2. It has been an ongoing process which is at least as old as the Mesopotamian empire. Since it is unlikely to ever end, Jews and their supporters have established a strategy to contain and mitigate the damages.
It is true however that the Armenians lost like 4/5ths of their population to the Turks (with the help of allied Germany). Pound for pound, this is worse then the Jewish genocide of WW2. Strangely however, Armenian Christians often side with Muslim Arabs--as both have a traditional resentment of Jews. The Kurds also took a terrible pounding at the hands of Arabs and yet about the only thing they seem to agree with the Arabs on is the evilness of Israel.
The native Americans were also obliterated but not by my ancestors. So while I commiserate I feel no guilt.
The Southern Sudanese lost several million to Genocide by Muslims in what is certainly the most marginalized genocide of modern history. Those people love Jews and greatly admire Israel.

This is Von Brunn's second attack with a concealed weapon. In 1981 he pulled out a sawed off shot-gun at the Federal Reserve Board and threatened to take members of the Board hostage. He served 6.5 years of an 11 year sentence. Trollstein - First of all, to you and tlfbiy, the 'anonymous' poster that listed some facts from the 'other side' wasn't spewing hatred of any kind. The poster was just disagreeing with you and trying to back it up. Just because the poster disagreed over the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, does not mean he/she is a hateful anti-semite.
"Jews are one of the very few peoples who actually have morals. It may be for this that they are punished." -- Really? Come on, I think you may be generalizing a little too much. Let's put a reformed Jew, a Hasidic Jew, and an Orthodox Jew in a room and see how civil that party is. I know from personal experience that many from those 3 sects hate the other.
That's not even the point, though. Just like a "Jew hating Arab", you come across as an "Arab hating Jew". It's the old, 'one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter' argument. Unfortunately, due to both outlooks, I doubt there will every be peace in that region. And to think - it all stems from who's daddy in the sky is better (and before you start, Christianity belongs right there alongside Judaism and Islam). Not to mention the whole "chosen people" thing is history's first 100% racist cultural viewpoint.
You argued evolution as a solution to meat-eating in one of your posts on the Vegan article. Don't you think it's time to realize religion is a bigger plague on humanity? Let's evolve, and chalk it up to giving organized/forced spirituality the old college try. I would be more worried about the hate that spews from the soul of organized religion than free-range chickens.
