Lou Dobbs, the Birthers and the Cable News Crack-Up

A few years back, during the height of illegal immigration-mania, I spent a considerable amount of time for this magazine with the man who seemed to stand for the great fear that this nation was under attack from across the border, that we were losing control of our sovereignty, and that our national agenda was being determined by Mexican President Vicente Fox. That man was Lou Dobbs.
Truth to tell, I kind of liked Dobbs. During our time together—which included staff meetings and live broadcasts, after-work drinks and even a trip to a Hispanic journalists’ convention in Miami—I found Dobbs to be terribly myopic but also blunt, a man who knew he had come from little and now appreciated that he had a lot. He called me pard’ner and loved a dirty martini.
Now, with Dobbs’ border war on the brink of irrelevancy, he has returned to the limelight with another grave concern—the birth certificate of President Barack Obama. The so-called "birther" movement, which demands that Barack Obama prove that he’s really, um, an American citizen, has been debunked by every sane political journalist, as well as officials from the Hawaii Department of Health. But it’s become the centerpiece of Dobbs’ nightly news program and his daily radio broadcast.

"I'm starting to think we have a document issue," Dobbs said on his radio program recently. While Dobbs has said that he believes Obama was born in Hawaii, he has continued to give considerable segment time to the matter, one that should have been put to rest along with the fake moon landings and the sighting of Elvis at a Burger King in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
But there seems to be no end in sight to Dobbs' new crusade. Even though CNN president Jon Klein decreed that the story was kaput, he later seemed to backtrack, saying that Dobbs has “more than 30 years as a television journalist, and I trust him, as I trust all our reporters and anchors, to exercise their judgment as various stories evolve.”
We shouldn’t be surprised. While some might say that Dobbs is merely tapping into the fears of wacky conspiracy radicals, the truth is Dobbs represents something even more troubling: The great devolution of cable journalism during the past decade and the cult of personality that is now standard on the three networks—CNN, FOX and MSNBC—that we turn to for “news.”
In a previous generation, broadcast network anchors—best embodied by the late Walter Cronkite—acted as father figures, calm hands leading us through the news of the day. What we see today are a plethora of rogue agents, bending information in ways that traditional reporters, even ones writing with a point of view, feel repulsed by. Hannity. O’Reilly. Matthews. Beck. We don’t trust these people so much use them to reaffirm our own beliefs about what’s right and wrong.
Sadly, it’s far too late to retreat from all of this. Getting CNN to stop Dobbs from his quixotic quest to find the document that would really, really show that our president is legally our president would be akin to providing ten tons of ammunition to those who believe we were duped in the last election, or that we are secretly ruled from Kenya. No. Dobbs and the rest of his ilk are here to stay, victors in a war that will very soon deliver the final destruction of the standards of real reportage. From where Dobbs and his peers sit, the grand marketplace of ideas has been replaced by feudal kingdoms in which we only we see and hear what our cable lords want us to.
Dobbs, with his fiefdom secure, will continue his crusade. And with each day, the stones surrounding him grow thicker, more permanent in their foundation. It’s his world now, with the echoes of what’s really important bouncing off them, dying whispers growing ever so faint, unheard, unheeded.

Where was George W. Bush's birth certificate, or Bill Clinton's or George H.W. for that matter? One has to be curious why this is an issue for some people, with this president. Could it be that he looks different than the others? Could it be because he didn't grow up in a traditional family, but one of mixed race. As a white woman, I am embarrassed by the continuing focus on this issue. The State of Hawaii has stated that this document is authentic. Independent journalists have seen the document and have reported on its authenticity. Move on.....surely there is a gathering of holocaust deniers with an empty chair.

To say otherwise is insulting to all the people who maintain the Bureau of Vital Statistics in the state. I was in Hawaii when it became a state and they are very proud of their state facilities.
I saw one idiot on TV, when shown the Certificate of Live Birth, say "it's not a "Birth Certificate." How stupid is that? Every state has their own document titles and in Hawaii it is Certificate of Live Birth. That IS a birth certificate and the Bureau of Vital Statistics has the ORIGINAL and has produced copies for President Obama in the past when he had to apply for a Passport which, if anything, is more stringent than the application to register for political office.

I DO understand the issue. I have a doctorate in journalism from Northwestern and have taught at some of the best schools in the country.
Please do not use the so-called "Western Center for Journalism" as a creditable source. This entity was developed in the early '90s as a place to spew ultra conservative pap and is nearly as bad as the "American Enterprise Institute" which Dick Cheney uses as his pulpit to pontificate specious arguments against democrats and in particular President Obama.
If you believe anything from this source, you have a serious problem. They began with a large endowment from a Clinton hater and who has been actively trying to foment a revolt against the democratic process ever since.

The Obama campaign provided a birth certificate, which can be EASILY found online, along with proof of authenticity. Simple research has turned up TWO birth announcements in Hawaii newspapers. Various officials in the State of Hawaii have confirmed that Obama was born there.
But for you folks, that's not enough. There has to be a "long form."
Right. And if such a form were to be provided, would that shut you guys up? No. You would then demand proof that the bew form was real. And then you would invent another form which you would demand to see.
Be honest, birthers. You have NO INTEREST in seeing proof -- if you had, you would have given up this exceedingly lame game by now. You just want to question the legitimacy of a popularly elected president rather than face the reality that your guy lost -- by a lot.

Lou Dobbs and others like him provide entertainment in order to attract more viewers to their "news" network. Do any of them truly believe that President Obama was born outside the United States. Probably not. Do they understand that most if not all members of Congress are vetted (birth certificates verified) by the FBI and other agencies before they can be awarded a security clearance and gain access to certain classified documents. Probably yes. And do they truly believe that U.S. intelligence and security agencies granted President Obama complete access to the most sensitive and highly classified documents and intelligence reports in the world just because he's really a neat guy? Probably not. But will any of this change Captain Steve's mind? Doubtful.

When I was born, in Minneapolis in the 50's, my Momma got a nice piece of paper with a golden seal and my gosh-darned footprints on it, and she kept it and gave it to me and I still have it.
When I applied for my passport years ago I went back to the county I was born in and got a stamped certificate of live birth, which they printed out and stamped on the spot.
When my kids were born in Minnesota in the 80's and 90's my wife and I got a stamped piece of paper similar to what I got from my birth county for my passport.
Now you are going on about a 'long form' and what the hell do you mean? Do you know, for a fact, that such a thing was always given out in Hawaii when Obama was born?
Even if it was, what if it got lost? My sister didn't get her gold seal baby-footprint birth certificate because my parents lost it. So what? She is an American citizen and she could get a copy and she got a US passport.
The thing is when someone demands to see someone else's papers it makes me think of the goddamn communist Soviet Union.

Mine, from Logan County, Colorado, which is a Certificate of Live Birth that is most obviously a photocopy of the original. The copy is certified by the county registrar, and is impressed with a stamped seal, which seal does not show on photocopies I make from this copy. It is also smaller than Obama's

Obama has already released his birth certificate. Numerous people have seen it, touched it and attested to its existence. "Most" people, who care, know this is true.
But I'm all in favor of folks like Pvt. Steverino throwing internet tantrums thinking that somehow they're privileged and so important that they simply must be shown the certificate. If I were Obama, I wouldn't bother revealing the certificate again.
The question has been asked and answered. One might be tempted to think there are much more important issues, like how he's a socialist, marxist, fascist who wants to destroy the fabric of white america because, well, just because.

Birther Madness Has a Method

I am a "birther," sort of. This is delicate, because there are really several varieties of birther. The Definitely-Kenyan Birthers, Frank-Marshall-Davis Birthers, Barry-Dunham Birthers, and He-Is-Anti-Christ birthers will have nothing to do with me because I am a Who-Knows Birther (WKB). Lou Dobbs is a WKB, so I feel his pain. I just want to know. I can and do resoundingly reject O on policy grounds anyway, and it wouldn't matter if he was in the direct line of George Washington himself. But I do have a problem with the glib and misinformed journalism writing this off as kook fringery. There is such a thing as a long form. I know because I have one. It's all I ever had. Until this controversy broke out, I didn't even know you could get a cheap imitation, on request, that would work for some, maybe even most purposes. I thought everybody had a long form. But then I was born back in the fifties, so computer-generated copies weren't available so much.
BTW I want to point out that the phrase "prima fascia" found on the form does not grant final legal authority to that secondary abstract being touted as "the official birth certificate." All it means is that for most purposes, one who presents this document earns a rebuttable presumption that it is true. That presumption, however, can be overcome by better evidence that conflicts with the abstract. The long form, because it contains significantly more information, with a much higher degree of resistance to forgery, provides exactly the kind of evidence that could overcome that presumption. But if such evidence is not admitted into the public record, who knows? Then you have to come up with other evidence, such as the inadvertent and eventually retracted testimony of Kenyan relatives and ambassadors that he was born in Kenya.
Furthermore, in a direct challenge to his constitutional qualifications, a court could find that that the abstract simply does not provide enough information to answer the questions raised by the "Natural Born Citizen (NBC)" clause. A regular citizen, even a citizen by birth, still might not qualify as "Natural Born." Vattel, in his Law of Nations, spells out that the NBC would have to be not only born under US jurisdiction, but must also be born to two US citizen parents holding no conflicting citizenships (Such a rule could disqualify O because his putative father was under British Jurisdiction by way of Kenya). Vattel's term was consciously imported into the constitution, so it applies. If SCOTUS were to finally decide this case based on the narrow precedents that currently control, they would have to use that definition or overrule it. Only a complete rendering of the original data would be sufficient to unravel this puzzle. Those who think this is an easy problem expose the fact that they really haven't looked at it. I feel embarrassment for them.
As for the birth announcements? Legally meaningless. You can't use them because they are not even as good as secondary data. Normally, they get generated automatically on filing of the original certificate. However, there is nothing to defend them from error or deception. Case in point, there is likely error or deception in the birth announcements posted for O because the address given as the residence of the Obama family, 6085 Kalanianaole Highway, was in fact occupied by one Orland Lefforge and his wife Thelma in August of 1961. No explanation I have seen thus far provides dispositive evidence that O ever lived there, or why an apparently wrong address is provided. Once seriously investigated, the birth announcements raise more questions than they answer.
Bottom line? Good journalism requires an open mind and a willingness to suspend judgment until sufficient facts are present to draw a reasonably certain conclusion. I do not believe we have arrived at that point. If that makes me a birther, so be it.

Nice, simple anaylysis. While the NBC is debatable, the even simplier issue is why he sealed most of his records. The focus of the birther on the BC would be the first step to revealing who he is. This is the first I read of someone else living in the address of the birth announcement at that time. Good Stuff.

I was born in the 50s don't have a long form. Maybe California just did short forms. Can Bush or any former and living president produce a long form? Have you seen them? If not, why haven't you bothered tracking down their long forms? Or do they only matter when you dislike the president?

I thoought any person born in the USA was ipso facto a citizen no matter what the parents were- am I wrong ? If the man was born in Hawaii in 1961 then he is a citizen. I always try to use the constitution on such matters. I do beleive the " birthers," are just angry- but can't bring themselves to accept the fact they were had by " former President - remeber 2000 ) Bush, and company. Well that is all I had to say

The article everyone is commenting on is reasonable, measured, and correct. This birther and other discussions are a diversion to keep American's attention focued away from, um, slightly more important issues, for example healthcare reform, is being hijacked by Big Medicine through their largess (spreading through Congress like a tsunami.) It's a strategy to maintain the status quo (and $$ firmly in the pockets of the power elite) by fearmongering (OMG, our president is actually a KENYAN.) Dobbs and his ilk earn their daily bread by attention-seeking behavior, to hell with what is right or wrong or IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST. Why delay the healthcare reform? To "get it right"? No, to kill it.
