Is Joe Arpaio the New George Wallace?

Once again, "America’s Toughest Sheriff" Joe Arpaio of Arizona's Maricopa County showed the U.S. Justice Department who's boss this week. In what the New York Times called an "angry, rambling outburst" at a press conference Tuesday, Arpaio vowed to continue his controversial immigration raids under the authority of state laws, even though Justice Department officials instructed his deputies to stop making immigration arrests in the field.

This blatant defiance of federal law is reminiscent of another American anti-federalist, George Wallace, the governor who famously blocked two black students from entering an Alabama State University auditorium in 1963, nearly ten years after Brown v. Board of Education. Wallace stood firmly against desegregation even after the federal government mandated it. Now, Arpaio seems to be taking a page from his playbook in matters related to immigration.

The statute currently in question is section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which enables local officials to enforce immigration laws with the approval of the Department of Homeland Security. Jennifer Allen of the Tucson-based Border Action Network explains that either party can opt out of the agreement, as DHS did partially earlier this week. So, she said, it is now illegal for Arpaio to continue his immigration raids without the approval of DHS. "There are no state-level laws that say you can set up a check point in a predominantly low-income Latino neighborhood and start pulling people over left and right for insignificant pretenses."

But that's just what Arpaio has promised to continue doing. At the press conference, he said that if ICE refused to deport immigrants his department deemed illegal, he would drive them to the border himself. Overt resistance to federal immigration laws is consistent with the sheriff’s previous DOJ dealings. In March, he declined to testify before a House Judiciary Committee probe into accusations that he uses racial profiling to make arrests.

"We know that segregation never really ended. But it is perpetuated and escalated here with another population,” says Allen of the Border Action Network. "Arpaio is the contemporary manifestation." Rather than implement the law, Allen continues, Arpaio "has dedicated his resources to his political vendetta and racist agenda of trying to eradicate illegals from Maricopa County."

And as Arpaio considers a run for governor in 2010, his resemblance to Wallace could grow even stronger.

Sheriff

Buddy
I am convinced he is a relic. But worse than that, he is law enforcement. Also, he is an unapologetic racist and bigot.
I live in Pima County. I've never encountered ANY problem with the Latino community here; legal or illegal.
These people brave the harsh and unforgiving Sonoran Desert looking for what EVERYONE who comes to America looks for, a chance for a better life.
I have no beef with these people-legal or not!

Arpaio is ka-razy

I agree completely with tombstonecowboy. I also live in Pima County, and we would see Arpaio as a crazy old man, but the problem is that he's a crazy old man with a lot of power (which, as we've seen, he's keen on abusing).Since the Legislature is already crazy-right, if Arpaio seeks and wins the governorship, I'm done with Arizona. Hopefully we (D)s will have a challenger in Terry Goddard!

You really think they (the

You really think they (the local pigs) need the fed pigs permission to stop and identify anyone they want?

Probable Cause

Buddy
First, police aren't pigs. Second, they do a difficult job.
The Sheriff here employs a strategy that essentially says, if you're brown and you live on this side of town, this gives me probable cause to stop you and demand to see your proof of citizenship.
This bothers me. My wife is a so-called person of color, people don't overtly look down on her, but a kind of subtle racism underlies some people's attitudes.
People, like the sheriff are living in a lily white 'Leave it to Beaver' world that never existed in the first place. Their xenophobic attitudes arise, at least in some people's minds, longing for an America that never was, and never will be.
People like him just cannot get their heads around the idea that American demographics have changed, AND there's no going back to a world they illogically long for.
America, like it or not, is a de-facto multilingual society.
The sheriff is almost delusional with his immigration fetish, (for lack of a better word). Like John Wayne, he's riding into town and is single-handedly going to set things back to the Antebellum Era when Native Americans were sub-human drunks, and Hispanics were not really American enough somehow.
When I was in high school in Tucson many years ago I was friends with an Hispanic girl. One day another student stupidly insulted her calling her a 'wet-back' Her response was this," I didn't cross the border, the border crossed me. My family has lived here for the better part of four centuries!"
Get over it Joe, America is more diverse than ever and these demographics aren't likely to change any time soon.

BackSPIN

The only way to expose Sheriff Joe Arpaio is on the Big Screen. My movie "BackSPIN" is in Preproduction. Filming before 2010. We will show the corruption and visuals of Tent City like no one has ever seen. Summer temperatures in tents reach over 100's for months and zero in winter are inhumane for petty crimes, false arrests and some awaiting trial. Civil rights are violated. This is a money making, control abuse of power run by a leader Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The world does not even begin to know how many lives have been brutally abused even murdered by the hands of this man in charge. Immigration is only a start of the paper trail. Sheriff Joe Arapaio and Maracopa County will go down as True Criminals once shown to the world on the big screen coming soon at a threatre near you!

The Sheriff is doing a great

The Sheriff is doing a great job. That is why we vote for him year in year out. Some one has to enforce the law.
Strange liberals do not want the law enforced - they support illegal
The right/business communities do not want immigration law to be enforced, this way they can continue to bring in workers who will work for less

Millions all over the world are waiting and applying to enter US legally and yet we blame some one who is trying to enforce our laws

These two groups are messing up the country

News flash – the Sheriff will once again, be reelected by a large margin.

,

Sheriff Joe is a pig. He enjoys playing little games like making the men in the jail wear pink underwear (so they don't take it home?) like some college fratboy hazing an underclassman.
Americas Police are in the process of becoming a burden on us, here in the land of the free we hold a higher percentage of our population in prison than anyone else, and those people didn't get locked up by waiters.
Cops are searching people "randomly" without warrants all the time (happened to 40 year old me twice this summer) without cause.
The last time I called the police (because some woman screamed "call the police" during a domestic in the street) I watched in horror as they used tazers (as punishment) against both the screamer and her boyfriend AFTER they ALREADY were in handcuffs and leg chains, they both had potty mouth, but they were under arrest and totally restrained, the tazing was a punishment from the cops for having a potty mouth.
I will not be calling the police again, and now when the drunk woman screams it every saturday night, neither do my neighbors (who also witnessed the tazing).
I am sorry but some coward who gets her jollys by giving electric shocks to restrained prisoners is a pig.

Joe

Buddy
The landslide victories the sheriff gets do not necessarily reflect the intelligence or patriotism of the electorate. Witness, Strom Thurmon, Herbert Hoover, George W., Jeff Sessions, Haly Barbour, Eric Cantor, John Boener, Sarah Palin, John Kyl, John McCain, et al. The list could go on forever with politicos from both parties. Having said that, there isn't much more that can be done about the citizens of Maricopa County.
What's really going on here is not about law enforcement; It's about primarily three things; to feed the inflated sense of self-worth of the sheriff, to turn law enforcement into a vulgar sideshow for Joe's ego, (and his fans amusement), and a platform to exhibit his bravado for defying, ultimately, the Attorney General of the United States.
As far as this empty argument goes about undocumented aliens stealing American jobs is a myth. They take often-times unpleasant and hard work with long hours that native citizens will not do. I've known my share of citizens who, when they find a job, stop looking for work!
Observing the sheriff's theater of the absurd is comedy for some people, save others, such as me, are not entertained.

And, I have personally witnessed police brutality. One night I was at Joe Louis Arena with my brother-in-law for a Red Wings hockey game. On the walkway from the parking structure to the arena we witnessed a policeman literally kicking the shit out of some homeless guy. His crime, selling lapel pins of the American Flag for $0.50.
In my hometown a squad of policemen murdered a schizophrenic who was "armed with a garden rake" who didn't comply with a police order to drop the rake. He must have been one dangerous dude, besides having the misfortune of being black, it took a fusilade of bullets to bring him down. I, if I were one of the policemen who fired, would be loath to admit that I wasn't man enough to disarm a schizophrenic armed with what we all know is a deadly weapon, a garden rake. In this particular case, not one officer was penalized or even rebuked, much less charged with homocide.
I write this not to pick an argument with the authorities, but rather make the much broader point that the more power the citizenry gives to law enforcement, the more precious freedoms they will stomp on.
Immigration is a federal issue. Joe should abandon this carnival like fixation with immigration. It's hard for me to understand how his actions make me any safer.
Retire and immigrate to Edmonton sheriff. Everyone there is white and you are unlikely to encounter any ferocious Mexicans.

Joe

Like many "Joes'" of late....Joe the Plumber, Joe Arpaio etc., they seek self-aggrandizing platforms to compensate for their more ummmm, astounding inadequacies. Like Joe the Plumber, Joe the sheriff isn't really what he appears to be and successfully perpetuates that among the voters of Maricopa County, like Evan Mecham did years ago (though we managed to remove that idiot). I am from Pima County, thank goodness, because I think there is something in the water in Maricopa County. I believe Joe the Sheriff needs his own reality show...perhaps then we might understand his fetish for prisoners in pink underwear....

50 reasons why Obama should NOT have won the Nobel Peace Prize:

The one thing that's amusing

The one thing that's amusing is how close his elections have been. It seems that a little more than half of the county likes him, yet the crime rate continues to rise with him as sheriff. Plus he hasn't saved the county any money. I think it's time someone made countered these claims and pointed out his failures to the mainstream media.

He also thinks that he's above the law, and the people who support him say that it's ok for him to break laws.

Posse Joe

Has MOJO run down this guy's record in civil rights actions?

Even if MOJO hasn't yet, I

Even if MOJO hasn't yet, I did a quick check on Sheriff Joe. In between 2004 and 2007, he had 2,700 suits filed against him in both Federal AND State courts. That's apparently 50 times the number of Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Houston COMBINED.
