Teabagging Alan Grayson

Barack Obama, the Fed, Hitler, Marxism, the government seizing control of health care, ACORN. Somehow all of this came together at a town hall meeting held in Tavares, Florida, on Monday night by Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fl.), when dozens of Teabaggers, those rightwing activists associated with the so-called Tea Party movement, showed up to slam Grayson and vent their anger at a political world—that is, their version of it.

Two weeks ago, Grayson argued on the House floor that Republicans' health care plan amounted to "don't get sick," and if you do, "die quickly." Grayson quickly became a hero for Democrats, and a target for GOPers. He later explained that he was being facetious, but the dozens of protesters outside this event were not the least bit amused. And despite the Beltway blather, it wasn't really Grayson's comments that had the protesters fired up. They had been mad long before Grayson said what he said.

Jason Hoyt, Jim Jones, and Tom Tillison, three of the protesters, each explained that they weren't there to protest Grayson's comments. They were angry about Grayson's support for H.R. 3200, the tri-committee health care reform bill that may soon pass the House of Representatives. All three said they had attended the Glenn Beck- and Fox News-encouraged 9/12 demonstration in Washington, DC last month, before Grayson made his famous speech. 9/12 is sort of the Teabaggers' Woodstock: everyone says they were there, and even though the reasonable crowd estimates were around 70,000, Jones assured me that two million people showed up. (That's just not true.)

Chuck Colley, who said he's new to the Tea Party movement, told me that the President, who he called "Ali Baba," is "ruining this country" by creating problems "so he can invoke more government." Obama "wants to be the Marxist leader of this country," the "Hitler," Colley said.

The rest of the Teabaggers (every protester I spoke to said he was a member of or otherwise affiliated with the "Tea Party Patriots") mostly had gripes that had little to do with Grayson's comments or the actual state of political debate in Washington. Instead, they railed against the usual bogeymen: a government takeover of health care (not happening), Barack Obama (plotting socialist overthrow), and the Federal Reserve (a target they share with Grayson, who has cosponsored a bill to audit the Fed). None of the protesters I spoke with was particularly well informed. Jones didn't appear to know that Grayson wanted to audit the Fed, even as he was telling me that the economic meltdown was the Fed's fault. Hoyt, who brought a cardboard cutout of Grayson to the rally, couldn't say why the cutout had a "Congressman from ACORN" button on its suit pocket.

Jones, Hoyt, and Tillison each voiced support for Patricia Sullivan, a local Tea Party leader who is running against Grayson. Soon enough, Sullivan was there, too, talking up reporters. "It sounds like someone is off their medicine," she said, referring to Grayson. "[He's] not thinking clearly." Sullivan's congressional run may not have the backing of the Republican establishment, but she clearly has some organizing skills: on her campaign site, Sullivan claims to have organized two 1,000-person tea parties. But there couldn't have been more than 100 protesters, despite a pre-protest "tailgate" that was organized for the time leading up to the Grayson event.

There were counter-protesters. Bob Jenner was sporting a fedora and holding up a sign that said Grayson: n., backbone. While most Tea Partiers were careful about what they said to reporters, they didn't always keep their muttering to themselves. "He's a teacher," one said of Jenner (who is). "That explains his socialist tendencies." Another speculated that something about Jenner (his sign? his hat?) would "be good for target practice." Jenner, who was being interviewed at the time, didn't catch the thinly-veiled threat.

The town hall itself was fairly uneventful. The vast majority of the Teabaggers didn't make it in, and those that did were quickly disarmed by Grayson's stunningly softspoken manner (or perhaps intimidated by his 6'4'' frame and rumors of lycanthropy). Besides, everyone already knew what everybody else thought. They'd settled that outside, with chants and counterchants. "Grayson tells the truth!" the Dems hollered."He lies!" the Tea Partiers would shout back. So while it may have been Alan Grayson's town hall, Joe Wilson was definitely there in spirit.

My brother

My brother, who lives in Grayson's district says that this Obama sychophant is so far out of step with his constituents that he will be toast at the next election.

Good riddance.

Grayson has no opponents yet.

The GOP here in Central Florida has sought out several candidates to run against Grayson. All of them have considered their prospects and then cut and run.

Toast? Pass the Jelly...

Wow, your brother is Psychic? How cool is that???

Coincidentally, my sister had a roommate whose parents live next door to a Psychic in Grayson's district. Unfortunately, although he is also able to "see the future", he has been unable to figure out what's happened to the fabled "Reasonable Republicans" (personally, I think they're in a secret valley with the Leprechauns and Unicorns).

I hate to break it to you

I hate to break it to you but "the people like you" that you are referring to are the majority who voted this president in. One more time...you "teabaggers" want to take the country back from the Majority! Good luck with that! heeheeheee!

teabaggers

lmao i love that. how many teabaggers do you think know what that means?

imao

I am an old, female bleeding heart liberal, yellow dog democrat; please tell me what imao means. I see it all the time. And I wonder, too.

Did you mean lmao?

Since you replied to the previous post I assume you were asking about lmao - laughing my ass off

I could conjecture about imao. imho is "in my humble opinion". then there is imnsho - "in my not so humble opinion". So I could suggest "in my asinine opinion" as suitable for imao

But I think you really meant "lmao"

heresay

Thank you very much for that information. Living somewhere other than Florida, you say that your brother says that he can predict the results of an election that is 13 months away. That's extremely reliable information.

alan grayson

i'm a native of orlando, Alan Grayson cannot be beaten. take it to the bank!!!!!!!!!

Don't take it to the bank.

Don't take it to the bank. They'll finance it, write it off, get money from the government to bail them out for taking it, and we'll be paying for it.

Significant portions of my

Significant portions of my family endured the National Socialist period in Germany. As a result that era has become a focus of particular interest, research and study. One of the deeply disturbing things I've noticed is that many of the "teabagger" tactics and attitudes are remarkably similar to those used by the Sturmabteilung Brownshirts in the 1920's and early 1930's. They, too, were a minority who seldom organized a particularly large crowd, yet they managed to position themselves for a successful seizure of power in 1933.

Weimar Germany was a progressive, albeit ineptly led, government. The engaged Germany in the League of Nations, demilitarization, promoted an international outlook in everything from politics to economics, Art to architecture (even sponsoring, briefly, the Bauhaus). They were also handicapped by catastrophic economic failures, first with the collapse of 1923-4, then with the global Depression in 1929-33. The NSDAP Brownshirts played on the anxieties and fears of conservative Germans, spread lies and rumors, attacked those they considered Communist and Socialist, and periodically instigated murderous riots. In the end, they were pivotal in bringing Hitler to power (Ironically, he turned on the SA leader, Ernst Roehm within a year of becoming Chancellor, but I digress).

The point is, that the teabagger movement is potentially a threat to us all. They may be a small clique of ignorant thugs and loudmouths right now, but with each event, they become more emboldened. They drink abundantly from the font of racism, white supremacy and religious hatred here in Arkansas, and probably elsewhere. Many otherwise innocent 'conservatives' have no idea about who they are rubbing shoulders with during their events and rages. Thus far, the President and the Democrats have utterly failed to bring this problem to heel.

My hope is that their manifest ignorance, viciousness and hatefulness will discredit them, marginalize them, and keep them from anything that resembles power. Tragically, history and realism suggest that a very different scenario will unfold.

what a stupid post.

what a stupid post.

Brilliant post

What on earth do you mean? It's well written, factually correct and insightful. It seems to me that your review is substantially less useful and completely devoid of any indication of intelligence on your part - far be it from you to judge.

Stupid Post Huh?

Guess what color of shirt the 9/12 protesters were wearing.

nicely said

thank you for your perspective. I too fear the fetid nature of this "teabagger" movement and am all too certain that it's end will not happen soon enough to save those of us who think for a living from it's ugly reign of power. Surely enough will wake up and recognize this beast from within, but your family's story shows us otherwise. Mankind sure has an ugly side.

Weimar Germany/ teabaggers

I agree. I have seen the same parallels. Many of the tea baggers are rabble, easily led and manipulated, but their anger is legitimate. The legitimacy of their anger will not matter to any of us, though, if the scenario does play out like 1933 Germany.

I'm not about to defend any

I'm not about to defend any movement, but do you really think that these people would parallel the socialist movement that formed the Nazis? If it does, then wouldn't it have to get to the point where this became the majority and voted someone with similar views into office?

Aside from that, look at the NAACP. Al Sharpton can say anything and his mob falls right in line, with no facts, and do the same thing. Suddenly it's a problem when someone else does it?

-The General.

The connection of teabaggers

The connection of teabaggers to nazi tactics is certainly accurate. The famous "beer hall putsch" resembles the teabag model. Hitler had guys with machine guns, the teabaggers have guys carrying assault weapons. Teabaggers do not believe in following the rules, and attempt to take over town - hall meetings.

Teabaggers are brownshirt thugs.

Astute Post - and Very Scary Lesson

It is often those who do not learn from the past that doom us all to repeat it. This article points out one important point: many tea party patriots are not truly aware of how their loose organization has been infiltrated by those whose plans have nothing to do with what they are trying to get the government to understand. I spoke yesterday with a woman who is part of this movement. She describe the 9/12 event in DC as "like a large family picnic event" and that she only saw signs that addressed policy issues, not attacks on Obama or threats against his life. I suspect that many legitimate tea party patriots are surprised by the hatred they seem to now engender, but I also suspect that they are not totally rejecting this attention as it gives them a platform.

In Germany, as I tried to point out in my conversation yesterday, most Germans were totally unaware of what was happening within their country because of a controlled press. I have cousins who lived through that era and they opposed the rise of National Socialism, but could not stop it. I have talked with an Hungarian woman who lived through the death camps and later the communist takeover of Hungary from which she escaped. She said something I will never forget: You Americans give up your freedom so quietly. She is right - the tea party patriots sat by quietly while we lost so many of our rights. Because the rest of us have also been quiet, we have lost far too much over the last decades. So, I am going to stop being silent.

I have invited this woman to meet me in Philadelphia and join me on one of the videos I am going to make there. Since I believe that public discourse means that both sides must be heard, I am not going to stop her and others from the Tea Party Patriots to have their say. That is free speech in practice, and then I will have mine. If those who are spewing hate and ignorance try to shout us out, then they will be shown for what they are. They claim to be the Majority, but like their historical predecessors they do not speak for America, and I hope that my Drive to DC across this nation will help to show those in DC that we want our government back from corporations and that we will hold them accountable at the polls in 2010 if they do not produce policies that serve the American public good. I will show that we can make our presence known without violence and without threats, and that if our government wants to pander to corporations and give hate a place in America, that we will outnumber their special interests and we will stem the tide of violence by our sheer numbers (or at least that is the objective, anyway!)

Please go to Let Freedom Ring.Community. Then plan on joining me across the nation and in DC, not to protest, but to be seen in vast numbers, to make videos expressing all our views, and showing those who would overthrow our government and its freedoms that in a true democracy, the Majority of the People take part without shouting, without violence, and in a manner that will meet the needs of the Majority, not a select minority who need to use force to make their point. I will look forward to meeting them and letting them have their say. I will be curious to see if they let me have mine!

these people that cry the

these people that cry the loudest are the scariest..their utter lack of knowledge is just breathtakingly screwed up..they the tea baggers are the ones acting like the brown shirts..great post.thank you for putting it out there.

Grayson for V.P.

I'm hoping that in 2012 Biden would step aside and allow Grayson to run for V.P.

We need Grayson to play bad cop to Obama's good cop.

The teabagging thugs are thriving on Obama's politeness. They need to be shown some of their own medicine. Bullies always shrink before anyone that exercises some spine.

If conservative policies worked, we'd be experiencing a boom time now. They had their day. They failed. If they are worrying about what might come, it's because of their own faults.

Another idiotic post.

Another idiotic post. Trying to lump all those who disagree with lefties like Grayson and Obama as Teabaggers is not working.

"Trying to lump all those

"Trying to lump all those who disagree with lefties like Grayson and Obama as Teabaggers is not working."

Which part of "every protester I spoke to said he was a member of or otherwise affiliated with the 'Tea Party Patriots'" did you find hard to understand, dumb fuck?

not working

YES IT IS WORKING. logic and reason usually win out over bluster, hate and bullshit, it sometimes just takes a while to get the job done, and in the interm there's usually a lot of bullshit and uglyness. as hard is it might be to believe now i think even glen beck's little nutsack teabaggers will shoot themselves in the foot. i hope not literally but when you give guns to idiots who knows what can happen

Re: idiotic post

Of course, if that is all you have to offer, then how do you really think people will line up? Surely you know that people will line up behind the reasoned, well-articulated argument, as opposed to the "STFU" style that you so brazenly model here.

This person has posted thoughtfully. Her remarks are entirely historically accurate. If, perhaps, you'd like to take a few deep breaths and re-calibrate your remarks into a format that others might actually find edifying, I'd imagine your Tonka would get more traction.

Just wondering. Does one

Just wondering. Does one have to be a complete bonehead to post comments on this site? Perhaps I am a complete bonehead for even bothering to reply to these inane comments.

More Parallels

There is a much stronger parallel between the Obama administration and the Nazi's. Like the Nazi's, the Obama administration and his compatriots in Congress share a disdain for capitalism and profit seeking in general. Like the Nazi's, Obama's cadre of so-called 'czars' constitutes a small cabal of far left radicals who seek to implement a socialistic system and squash dissenting points of view through control of the media and marginalization and demonization of the opposition - even going so far as to label the true Americans protesting Obama's agenda which is antithetical to the American way of life, as Nazi's and even terrorists.

The Department of Homeland Security has taken steps to those with dissenting viewpoints as terrorists to be watched and monitored for the Safety of the Fatherland. SEIU and ACORN thugs were quickly deployed to squash the peaceful protesters at tea parties and town hall meetings. Propaganda now fills our schools and airwaves, with children being taught Christian hymns with Obama replacing Jesus Christ for worship. Obama openly calls for a massive "Civilian National Security Force just as strong and just as well funded as the military" to crush the American people. Dissent will not be tolerated.

Of course Obama has done nothing to reverse the crackdown of civil liberties under the Bush administration, nor has he hastened the return of our troops. We remain fixed on the same exact course we were on under Bush and some of the things Obama has done would have done would have sparked outrage (raising troop levels in Afghanistan, increasing raids into Pakistan, raids in Africa) from the left. But that doesn't matter to you, does it?

What's really sad is all the useful idiots who are complicate in marginalizing the American patriots protesting to preserve justice and liberty in America. You think that your use of crude language somehow leads credence to your arguments, but in reality you simply reveal yourself for the fool that you are.

Maybe you should reread your

Maybe you should reread your history book. The Nazi party aligned themselves with the far-right ideologies of the time and corporations. I also seem to recall that "dissent" was not allowed by the liberals in Germany (as was done during George W. Bush's administration). Nazis believed in the superiority of the white German race (as do white supremists in this country). I hardly think Obama is a white supremist or racist. Republican icons (like Rush Limbaugh) are the ones promulgating racism in this country to the extent that the NFL players union is fighting his attempt to buy a football team. If you are unhappy with the "socialist" programs we have that have actually helped people and strengthened this country -- Medicare and Social Security -- then don't partake of them. Move somehwere else. No one is forcing you to live here.

The Nazi's were right wing

The Nazi's were right wing in that they were nationalists. But were the Nazi's fighting for liberty, justice, limited government, opportunity? NO. Take your BS and shove it. They were National SOCIALISTS who HATED private industry, HATED capitalism, and HATED FREEDOM. Sounds familiar, no?

Seriously, read a history

Seriously, read a history book. You look like an ignorant fool spouting that rewrite. Hitler aligned himself with industry. Hitler scapegoated and rounded up trade unions and communists before he went after Jews. I'm sorry our schools failed you.

I fail to see your point.

I fail to see your point. The only people "going after" people during the town hall meetings and tea parties were the SEIU thugs, one of whom beat a black man for distributing Gadsden flags while shouting "N*gger, n*gger!"

History

The origin of the Nazi party was the German Workers Party. A group that Hitler was initially sent to spy on due to German military fears that it was a radical leftist movement. Finding he agreed with them on many points, he began indoctrinating many of his fellow soldiers into the party. I think this quote of Hitler's is the most telling example of this groups economic policies...

"For modern society, a colossus with feet of clay, we shall create an unprecedented centralization which will unite all powers in the hands of the government. We shall create a hierarchical constitution, which will mechanically govern all movements of individuals." This was taken from a speech Hitler made in Feb. 1920. Needless to say, based on his actions after being made chancellor, his views didn't change in the intervening years.

Just for a bit of clarity, the "teabagger" movement as you call it, started with the fundamental ideal of obstructing "unprecedented centralization" in the hands of the American government. The idea was that this centralization was taking place through confiscatory taxation, and populist policies intended to appease the masses. They are furthermore against these same taxes going to businesses selected as "too big to fail". The movements organization began when Bush announced TARP. It gained momentum when Obama announced the stimulus, and got to the streets just in time for the Health Care debate (which seems to be what the group is most identified with despite the fact that technically it was merely the outlet that was available at the time they got organized).

It was hijacked at this point by several other groups all with varying political goals. This has become a frustration for the people who just wanted to focus on and limit government spending. It wasn't a racist ideal, nor was it a childish ideal. It was the same ideal that many credit as one of the founding principles of this nation. An ideal that was mocked by the British elites in much the same tone as most of the posts on this page. The ideal that one is entitled to the fruits of one's labor as their rightful property, and that it is the government's job to protect that property. Not to spread it around!

Cheers!

Aligned with industry?

Hitler scapegoated/rounded up trade unions, communist groups and liberal thinkers that had the potential to stand up to him, but his overall goal was to subdue all business to the will of his government. In these regards, both views (left/right) could be seen to be correct, but that merely clouds the fact that the result was a centrally planned economy run by the will of the government at every level. Fascism, Socialism, or Communism the intentions may be different, but historically the results have been pretty much the same. Especially for those people who disagree with the whole exercise.

Once this central control is in place, whether those who put it there are benevolent and kind or not, the fact remains that the tools of tyranny have been assembled. History has shown that it does not take long before someone comes along with the will to use these tools. Effective central planning concentrates too much power in the hands of too few people. The more effective that centralization, the more dangerous the people are who holds the reins. Right now the left (American perspective) holds the reins.

The current tone of American politics is a tit for tat. Each party makes power grabs while in control and thumbs their noses at the "losers". This cycle is concentrating more and more power in the hands of the government. In the future this will allow the government to flout the will of the people more and more. People do not seem to realize that this power doesn't dissipate when the current flavor gets elected out. It remains, and is often used in ways unintended by the people who created it.

This being the case, one would hope for a realization by both sides that restraint is necessary. This realization doesn't seem to be occurring, and its lack is becoming a considerable source of concern to all who love freedom. If we don't learn to listen to each other, Yes! even to those whom we disagree with, and don't learn to restrain our baser human instincts, someday we will all wake up to our worst nightmares come to life.

Cheers!

There's no apostrophe in "Nazis" if it's not a possessive

Just so ya know.

Oh, and you're a silly babbling loon. I got your "9(soft)12(hard) Project" right here.

Deluded

"Like the Nazi's, the Obama administration and his compatriots in Congress share a disdain for capitalism and profit seeking in general."

There is no reason to believe that the nazis or the Obama Administration or congressional Democrats have a disdain for capitalism and profit seeking in general. Naziism is essentially a corporate oligarchy, where profit seeking justifies any policy, no matter how brutal. True, the DLC seems to agree with the nazis on this point, but the GOP does so to an even greater extent.

"Obama's cadre of so-called 'czars' constitutes a small cabal of far left radicals"

"Czar" making is more typical of the last administration, though, regrettably, this is one of the harmful rightist tactics that Obama has failed to discontinue. Speaking as a leftist radical, I can assure you that there are no leftist radicals in influential positions in the Obama Administration. To assert that there are is to walk in the steps of the fascists. Don't you realize that the nazi mob was convinced, as they were told, that they were preserving their traditional values against the exploits of communists, terrorists and Jews? Don't you realize that they were convinced of their own patriotism as they dragged their country and the rest of the world down into the darkness of world war? Tea baggers may think of themsleves as patriotic defenders of the American way from foreign ideas, but they are really just fascist stooges.

"The Department of Homeland Security has taken steps to those with dissenting viewpoints as terrorists to be watched and monitored for the Safety of the Fatherland."

It's funny how you guys didn't have a problem with this when it was a white Republican in the White House and his targets were muslims and leftists.

"SEIU and ACORN thugs were quickly deployed to squash the peaceful protesters at tea parties and town hall meetings."

Show us one instance of "squashing," and then we will address your ridiculous assertion of "thugs." Squashing is what happens when a protest occurs which does not coincide with the agenda of the corporate media: numbers are downplayed, messages are distorted, protestors are ridiculed. This is what happens to a real protest movement. The tea baggers enjoyed exaggerated numbers, messages helpfully organized and transmitted by broadcast pundits, and critics who pointed out that protesting in favor of the rich and powerful is not really protesting were the ones who were ridiculed.

"...children being taught Christian hymns with Obama replacing Jesus Christ for worship. Obama openly calls for a massive "Civilian National Security Force just as strong and just as well funded as the military" to crush the American people. Dissent will not be tolerated."

Seriously, where do you get this crap? The hyperpatriotic hyperloyalty pushed on the American people by the previous regime, the unecessary nationalization of Guard units, the detention camps set up by Halliburton, torture, wiretapping---none of this made any impression on you people who now say that you are all for preserving liberty. What has changed is that there is no longer a White Republican in the White House.

"...some of the things Obama has done would have done would have sparked outrage (raising troop levels in Afghanistan, increasing raids into Pakistan, raids in Africa) from the left."

Anyone who has been paying attention to the left will know that such things are sparking outrage. What they are not sparking is a desire to protest in favor of Fox News and the medical insurance industry. Anyone who is paying attention to the Tea Baggers notes that their primary effect has been to give Obama an excuse to continue neoconservative policies; they give the impression that the agenda of corporate powers is supported by grass roots activism.

"What's really sad is all the useful idiots who are complicate in marginalizing the American patriots protesting to preserve justice and liberty in America. "

Well. duh! You should take your own advice.

The basic assumption of your

The basic assumption of your rebuttal - that I am a bootlicking neocon - is dead wrong. The tea party movement is a movement AWAY from Bush-esque neoconservatism toward libertarianism/libertarian conservatism. Since all your arguments seem based on the premise that I'm a neocon, I'm not even going to bother to respond to the remainder of your post.

Libertarian, huh?

So, where do you stand on gay marriage or the drug war? I bet that the majority of teabaggers bleat on about "liberty", except in those two key regards.

Please don't go....

I am all broken up inside.....please don't leave the forum dip shit...please

The Right Wing Like to Call Other People Nazis

Yes, they do, when in fact it is the Teabaggers who threaten violence against people with whom they disagree. ("We can use him for target practice," said a Teabagger.) Teabaggers bring guns to political events. Right wingers have gone seriously off the rails. And please don't give me the Jonah Goldberg crap. You bet Nazism can happen here, but it isn't Obama who is fomenting it.

Yes, Nazism is completely

Yes, Nazism is completely compatible with the ideals of the tea party movement - liberty, lmited government, etc. Go ahead, wallow in your ignorance.

Nobody ever threatened

Nobody ever threatened violence, you're making that up. And we have the right to bear arms - get used to it.

"We came unarmed (this

"We came unarmed (this time)"
"It Is Time To Water The Tree Of Liberty"

Dork

Maybe everyone should just piss on you......you know....like a freedom liberty shower only we are actually pissing on you dip shit.
