Warren Buffett: Climate Killer?

| Thu Jan. 7, 2010 12:28 PM PST

Over at Rolling Stone, Tim Dickinson has published a list of 17 "polluters and deniers who are derailing efforts to curb global warming." Topping his list is a rather unconventional choice: Obama advisor and Oracle of Omaha Warren Buffett. Dickinson points out that Buffett has poo-pooed the climate bill as a "huge tax" that would mean "very poor people are going to pay a lot more for their electricity." Moreover, he's poured money into some of America's dirtiest companies, recently purchasing 1.28 million shares of ExxonMobil and buying the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad--the nation's top hauler of coal--for $26 billion, his largest purchase ever. "As a savvy investor," Dickinson writes, "Buffett would only buy a coal-shipping railroad if he felt certain that Congress would fail to crack down on coal pollution."

Dickinson's list of 17 "climate killers" is a good read for anyone who wants to get up to speed on the right wing's hit squad. And for a more targeted rundown of people who are pusing climate change skepticism, check out our Dirty Dozen of Climate Change Denial.

they could make holocaust denial mainstream

I read the Rolling Stone article. If people that wealthy and powerful got behind holocaust denial, they could get the same people who doubt global warming to doubt the holocaust ever happened, and conservatives would believe it was just a liberal hoax.

Denying AGW is NOT equivalent

Denying AGW is NOT equivalent to being a Nazi.
How dare you even try to conflate a fact (holocaust) with fantasy (AGW).

Josh, I really enjoy and

Josh, I really enjoy and respect your reporting, but I think you're painting Buffet with too broad a brush. Didn't he just donate something like $40 BILLION of his personal fortune to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation? The way I read his investment in Burlington Northern is an investment in mass transportation, its a wager on it's future. Don't forget, it's made up of about 400 different railroad lines connecting major metropolitan areas throughout the Midwest, north, south, northwest. And trains are definitely a "greener" option than driving, trucking, shipping, or flying. Sure he may have poo-pooed the Carbon Tax, but there are a lot of critics of the carbon mitigation proposals from all different political/economic sides. This smells a bit like a headline in search of a story...

There were many who denied

There were many who denied that the holocaust was true while the crimes were being committed even as many people were warning them and the world of the problem that was ocurring. People like the non-believers of global warming tend to live in denial of facts that are tough to accept.

Why not, dummies? Can you multiply?

Warren Buffet knows that Global Warming is a complete, total, politically motivated HOAX, and that we can spew carbon dioxide without impacting anything. He also knows that China and India now know that for sure and will never agree to Cap and Trade---which is rendered unnecessary and spurious by the first factoid. So why shouldn't he invest in coal?

Follow along with me with your calculators and it will finally be obvious enough.

Carbon dioxide makes up 0.04 of one percent of the atmosphere.

Of that, mankind accounts for 14%, or in other words, 0.14 X 0.04 = 0.0056 of one percent of the atmosphere is attributable to humans.

Of THAT amount, about 25% represents the increase of carbon dioxide since 1900, so the total change in the amount of carbon dioxide attributable to humans ---and supposedly the whole "reason" for "global warming"-----is:
0.25 X 0.0056 = 0.0014 of one percent of the atmosphere.

A change of fourteen thousandths of one percent of the atmosphere is the cause of global warming?

That's like saying a single hair on my dog's butt "caused" the continent of Asia.

It is completely, obviously, physically impossible. It is a venal, ridiculous, and purposeful hoax perpetrated by socialists intent on parting YOU from YOUR money for THEIR very material benefit.

So man up and realize that this world is a fish tank and Al Gore made over a hundred million dollars selling this crap to you.

Idiot avannavon

Your arguments are fallacious. Go back to your Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh.

Your "small percentage" argument is a textbook example of "reductio ad absurdum." My proof of your fallacy can be shown by counter-example:

A lethal dose of Tetanus toxin for humans is 2.5 ng (thats 2.5 x 10^(-9) grams). Put that dose in a 150 lb person:

150 lbs = 68040 grams, so death is at a concentration of:

(2.5 x 10^(-9)/68040 = 3.67 x 10^(-14), or

.0000000000000367%

So, I dare you to consume .0056 of one percent of Tetanus toxin, or for that matter the same dose of Diptheria toxin, Ricin, LSD, Heroin, or Fluoride. Those are just a few I found with a quick Google search; I'm sure that .0056 of one percent of thousands of other substances would also kill you.

Can you provide references

Your numbers seem interesting but you do not provide a single reference for what you say. Can you please provide them and give some credibility to your statements?

numbers without sources

Well pulling numbers out of your but isn't going to convince any one of this site.

Here's at least one point where you are wrong:
Pre-industrial carbon dioxide levels hovered around 280 ppm until 1850. Human activities pushed those levels up to 380 ppm by early 2006. (NOAA)

I must say

This site always has vehement detractors,My question is why are they here if they don't wish to part of the solution.

Possibly we are not the problem but percentages mean absolutely nothing if they are not put into the context of the issue at hand.Maybe that is a small number but how much of a change is the environment capable of withstanding ?That may be a better question, not to account for the fact that we are using up all the oil.the pesticide we use are killing the earth and agribusiness is stripping the topsoil and deforesting at rates that the ecosystem that we inhabit may not be able to withstand.

And as far as the hair on your dogs bum its your brain matter.
