In the Caribbean, Nature occasionally serves up a reminder of who's really in charge: Hurricane Luis in 1995 swamped the coral-reef island of Barbuda, wrecking homes, boats, and the local water supply along the way. Antigua took similarly severe hits that hammered its nascent tourist industry; numerous soft corals were damaged, although those at dive sites, at least, are reportedly coming back. They're not out of the woods yet: Erosion from coastal construction has polluted coastal waters with coral-choking silt.
