Land erosion and sewage discharge are beginning to damage the tremendous coral reefs of New Caledonia (France), where nickel mine tailings are also polluting coral lagoons. Stresses in the Vanuatu chain have thus far been confined to urbanized Port Vila, but the government of Vanuatu is now attempting to dramatically increase tourism by upgrading its airport and tourist accommodations.
