Soil erosion, overfishing, and urban pollution persist

Western Samoa's corals are under stress from mining, agriculture, construction, overfishing, organic pollution, constant volcanic lava flow, and siltation caused by deforestation. The indigenous conservation organization Fa'asao Savaii, established by Samoan chieftain Va'asilifiti Moelagi Jackson, is working to establish nature preserves in rainforests and coral reefs.
