Lyin' Bully

Instead of picking on someone his own size, Rush consistently targets dead people, little girls, and the homeless--none of whom can fight back.

For more resources on Rush Limbaugh, see our resource guide.

One of the things that concerns a lot of Americans lately is the increase in plain old nastiness in our political discussion. It comes from a number of sources, but Rush Limbaugh is a major carrier.

I should explain that I am not without bias in this matter. I have been attacked by Rush Limbaugh on the air, an experience somewhat akin to being gummed by a newt. It doesn't actually hurt, but it leaves you with slimy stuff on your ankle.

Continued From Above

I have a correspondent named Irwin Wingo in Weatherford, Texas. Irwin and some of the leading men of the town are in the habit of meeting about 10 every morning at the Chat'n'Chew Cafe to drink coffee and discuss the state of the world. One of their number is a dittohead, a Limbaugh listener. He came in one day, plopped himself down, and said, "I think Rush is right: Racism in this country is dead. I don't know what the niggers will find to gripe about now."

I wouldn't say that dittoheads, as a group, lack the ability to reason. It's just that whenever I run across one, he seems to be at a low ebb in reasoning skills. Poor ol' Bill Sarpalius, one of our dimmer Panhandle congressmen, was once trying to explain to a town hall meeting of his constituents that Limbaugh was wrong when he convinced his listeners that Bill Clinton's tax package contained a tax increase on the middle class. (It increased taxes only on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans.) A dittohead in the crowd rose to protest: "We don't send you to Washington to make responsible decisions. We send you there to represent us."

The kind of humor Limbaugh uses troubles me deeply, because I have spent much of my professional life making fun of politicians. I believe it is a great American tradition and should be encouraged. We should all laugh more at our elected officials--it's good for us and good for them. So what right do I have to object because Limbaugh makes fun of different pols than I do?

I object because he consistently targets dead people, little girls, and the homeless--none of whom are in a particularly good position to answer back. Satire is a weapon, and it can be quite cruel. It has historically been the weapon of powerless people aimed at the powerful. When you use satire against powerless people, as Limbaugh does, it is not only cruel, it's profoundly vulgar. It is like kicking a cripple.

On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, "Did you know there's a White House dog?" Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time and as far as I know had never done any harm to anyone.

When viewers objected, he claimed, in typical Limbaugh fashion, that the gag was an accident and that without his permission some technician had put up the picture of Chelsea--which I found as disgusting as his original attempt at humor.

On another occasion, Limbaugh put up a picture of Labor Secretary Robert Reich that showed him from the forehead up, as though that were all the camera could get. Reich is indeed a very short man as a result of a bone disease he had as a child. Somehow the effect of bone disease in children has never struck me as an appropriate topic for humor.

The reason I take Rush Limbaugh seriously is not because he's offensive or right-wing, but because he is one of the few people addressing a large group of disaffected people in this country. And despite his frequent denials, Limbaugh does indeed have a somewhat cultlike effect on his dittoheads. They can listen to him for three and a half hours a day, five days a week, on radio and television. I can assure you that David Koresh did not harangue the Branch Davidians so long nor so often. But that is precisely what most cult leaders do--talk to their followers hour after hour after hour.

A large segment of Limbaugh's audience consists of white males, 18 to 34 years old, without college education. Basically, a guy I know and grew up with named Bubba.

Bubba listens to Limbaugh because Limbaugh gives him someone to blame for the fact that Bubba is getting screwed. He's working harder, getting paid less in constant dollars and falling further and further behind. Not only is Bubba never gonna be able to buy a house, he can barely afford a trailer. Hell, he can barely afford the payments on the pickup.

And because Bubba understands he's being shafted, even if he doesn't know why or how or by whom, he listens to Limbaugh. Limbaugh offers him scapegoats. It's the "feminazis." It's the minorities. It's the limousine liberals. It's all these people with all these wacky social programs to help some silly, self-proclaimed bunch of victims. Bubba feels like a victim himself--and he is--but he never got any sympathy from liberals.

Psychologists often tell us there is a great deal of displaced anger in our emotional lives--your dad wallops you, but he's too big to hit back, so you go clobber your little brother. Displaced anger is also common in our political life. We see it in this generation of young white men without much education and very little future. This economy no longer has a place for them. The corporations have moved their jobs to Singapore. Unfortunately, it is Limbaugh and the Republicans who are addressing the resentments of these folks, and aiming their anger in the wrong direction.

In my state, I have not seen so much hatred in politics since the heyday of the John Birch Society in the early 1960s. Used to be you couldn't talk politics with a conservative without his getting all red in the face, arteries standing out in his neck, wattles aquiver with indignation--just like a pissed-off turkey gobbler. And now we're seeing the same kind of anger again.

Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting, the organization that provided the absurd Limbaughisms that you see to the right, has a sweet, gentle faith that truth will triumph in the end, and thinks it is sufficient to point out that Limbaugh is wrong. I say it's important to point out that he's not just wrong but that he's ridiculous, one of the silliest people in America. Sure, it takes your breath away when he spreads some false and vicious rumor, such as the story that Vincent Foster's body was actually discovered in an apartment owned by Hillary Clinton. Or when he destroys an important lobby-control bill by falsely claiming that it would make the average citizen subject to lobbying laws. Yes, that's sick and perverse.

But it's important to show people that there is much more wrong with Limbaugh's thinking than just his facts. Limbaugh specializes in ad hominem arguments, which are themselves ridiculously easy to expose. Ted Kennedy says, "America needs health care reform." Limbaugh replies, "Ted Kennedy is fat."

Rush Limbaugh's pathetic abuse of logic, his absurd pomposity, his relentless self-promotion, his ridiculous ego--now those, friends, are appropriate targets for satire.

your broad generalization and misunderstanding of rush's audience is a perfect example of how the left is out of touch with this nation (and never listen to the show themselves).

how about an article about poor ole Rush being the fall guy for Rep. party. Or, his educational background and ability to understand (?) anything.

you are all waked out and this country is going to hell in a hand basket especially if the LIBS get in remember the carter administration well here we go again if you can cash in your assets do so because the libs will take your money and give it to people who dont help them selves...take notice!!!!

please be respectful of the dead...no not rush i would have said the undead! Miss Molly Ivins.

oh no. Molly is right on. She is witty, she is intelligent and she's right. Rush's claim to fame however is hate and hypocrisy. Those are outstanding virtues! Rush really is an idiot; a dangerous idiot just because of great thinkers like you.

Why do otherwise intelligent journalists give so much credit to Rush Limbaugh? Have they ever listened to his show for its full three hours?--the staged phone calls, prepared scripts, tortured statistics, non-sequiturs, twisted logic, half-baked ideas, gasped change of direction in mid thought, wrong predictions, baseless information, false piety, relentless blustering, mockery and s[deleted]ing?

Have they ever considered his qualifications? –a first-semester drop-out out from a third-tier college, a stadium beer vendor, a draft dodger (claimed he had an incapacitating boil on his anus), a pill addict, a boor, an ignoramus, a buffoon of the first order.

John McCain was right in calling Limbaugh a Bozo, and then apologizing to Bozo for the comparison.

Rush Limbaugh and others of his ilk- Bill Cunningham, Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Neal Boortz, et al.--.are not the true voice of conservative Americans. Admittedly, they are pretty good entertainers and their show ratings may be high. But as political and social commentators, they are a joke, not to be taken seriously.

Note how little sway their ranting had on the 2006 congressional elections.

God help America.

I listend to 15 minutes of Limbaugh's show and it made me nauseous so I shut it off.

I remember just before Benazir Bhutto was asassinated she spoke in a interview on I.N.N. news in an off-handed fashion that Osama Bin Laden was killed by Al Quiada. Was that story erroneous or was it carried by other independent nees services?

I just saw this. I really miss Molly

(Response to Ann Coulter for an article prasing Rush Limbaugh)

John McCain had it right when he called Limbaugh a Bozo and then apologized to Bozo for making the comparison.

Listen to one of Limbaugh's show for its full three hours and you'll see what McCain was talking about--the staged phone calls, prepared scripts, tortured statistics, non-sequiturs, twisted logic, half-baked ideas, gasping changes of direction in mid thought, out-of- context sound bytes, wrong predictions, baseless information, false piety, relentless blustering, mockery and s[deleted]ing.

Also consider his background--a first-semester college drop-out, a stadium beer vendor, a draft dodger (claimed he had an incapacitating boil on his anus), and pill addict. .

“El Rusho’s” ratings may be high. After all, he's a good entertainer, certainly a lot better than Bozo. But no one except another clown masquerading as sage-- an Ann Coulter, for example--could take his moronic chatter seriously.

you are stupid.

Lyin' bully..wow, go stand in the corner and wait for some free handouts from the government. Suicide is always an option buddy!

The thing about Rush Limbaugh is that he doesnt really believe his drivle himself. He is truly a man who puts his ratings well above his country. He is far too savvy to actually believe that Osama wants to kill babies who survived abortion but he knows that saying hysterical things he will keep his audience intrigued. He is the worse kind of radio host, the worst kind of human being and the very worst kind of American

ALL HAIL MAHA RUSHY! Limbaugh is great. Great for helping to keep this country from slipping into the hands of and being destroyed by leftist fools like the one that wrote this article.

He is still at it. Last week he was making fun of Obama's dying grandmother. He was pretending to try while talking about how she wasn;t really sick etc. Today he did a little Obama imitation in a funny (to him, anyway) stereotypical Black voice.

Limbaugh knows no bounds and has no conscience!

The death of a loved should be off limits as should be their children, ethnicity, illnesses, handicaps, etc.

Limbaugh has no shame and he is obviously out of ideas.

Sorry.. I meant to say he was pretending to CRY.

Maybe he will now make fun of me for being typing-impaired.

The quote from the so-called 'ditto head' was more like this:

"I don't think you fully appreciate that we didn't send you there to represent the goddamned Clintons. We sent you there to represent us and you didn't do it."

That's why the Dimocrat only served one term.

And BTW: Good riddance to Ivins.

As usual those who believe as you need to get your head removed from your rectum and get out more. YOUR ANTI-CONSERVATIVE comments prove that you and your kind are anti United States of America plus you need to garner some intelligence to atain the rank of idiot. You surely don't get it!

YOUR ANTI-CONSERVATIVE comments prove that you and your kind are anti United States of America plus you need to garner some intelligence to atain the rank of idiot. You surely don't get it and never will. May GOD help you---please don't run away this time when GOD wants to install a brain in your head.

Look, I'm not

Look, I'm not "Anti-Conservative" nor am I "Anti-Liberal", I actually fall in between with a lean towards Republican, and I can tell you this, it is people like Rush who feel that it is more important to hate others then to come up with true solutions that keep people like me from wanting to be associated with the Republican Party. I remember a few years ago, Rush bashing Michael J Fox because he did an add promoting a change in the stem cell research laws. Of course that is going to be a cause that Fox is going to support, it is something that has direct impact on his life. Now I could see a conservative saying "I don't agree with that and here is why..." but all Rush could talk about is how Fox was hamming it up saying Fox "intentionally didn't take his medication so he would be jerking around" and then proceeded to twitch himself, making fun of anyone who has that disability. All this did is show how hateful and ignorant Rush is. If someone has Parkinsons, its their medication that makes them twitch, if they don't take the medication then their muscles actually stiffen up and they can't move. And his show is FILLED with stuff like this! How can anyone listen to that much hate and not feel dirty by it?

@I know she's dead --

Are you trying to say that Clinton (I presume that's whom the inane "the Dimocrat" comment was about) only served one term? Seriously?

Because that means you're even more ignorant than the average dittohead (and that's really, really ignorant).

Since you obviously forgot, let me remind you: Clinton was elected in 1992 and again in 1996, and served all 4 years of both terms (in spite of efforts by pinheads like Limbaugh and yourself).

@Smoothie --

Your rants about the quality of intellect among those who disagree with you and the pompous gasbag Limbaugh would carry a whole lot more weight if you knew how to write proper English.

In particular, may I suggest that you learn something about grammar and spelling (or at least how to use a grammar- and spell-checking program). Your writing only exposes you for the fool you are.

Ironic the amount of bigotry in a post decrying bigotry.

However, Limbaugh never called Chelsea a dog, never held up a picture of her and made comment, never held up a picture of Socks to compare it to other White House Pets, etc. As a reporter, Ms. Ivins knows this and chooses to continue to lie about it. The transcript of the television show proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the topic of the segment was "In/Out" by David Hinckley and occurred on Nov. 6, 1992 - 2 months before the Clintons occupied the White House or before anyone knew there was a Socks. It was about the fact that on its way "Out" was "the cute dog" and on its way "In" was "the cute kid." Limbaugh asked for a picture of the cute kid, and Millie the Bush dog was still showing - he said "No no no, that's not the kid; can we please get a picture of the kid - ok, that's the kid." The person who didn't change pictures quickly enough was fired. But the most you can accuse Limbaugh of is calling Millie the dog (who everyone knew at the time and would have recognized immediately) a "cute kid."

This is one lie whose time to be stricken from the public memes has LONG SINCE PASSED. Molly, retract your lie once and for all, and do your best to point out what actually happened. Even the press AT THE TIME didn't try to pass off the nonsense about him holding up a picture of the girl and calling her a dog, or holding up a picture of the cat - all they tried to do was say he had the picture on at the wrong time on purpose to make an implication; you've cubed that into one WHOPPER of a tale, as has the rest of the internet. Stop it.

''However, Limbaugh never

''However, Limbaugh never called Chelsea a dog, never held up a picture of her and made comment, never held up a picture of Socks to compare it to other White House Pets, etc.'' Sorry but that is wishful thinking. It did happen on his show. While flipping channels one night, I tuned into the very episode on which he did that little stunt. I found it unbelieveable and appalling at the time--and do still--that a grown man would take a such a gratutitous and vicious cheap shot at a child... a child, for God's sake. And did he ever mug for the camera while doing it--he knew exactly what he was saying between the lines by showing her picture.

Sourced Rebuttals vs. Unsourced Accusations

"Sorry but that is wishful thinking. It did happen on his show. While flipping channels one night, I tuned into the very episode on which he did that little stunt..And did he ever mug for the camera while doing it"

Memory is not a source. I've had personal exchanges with people who insist that when they were flipping channels, they saw news video of Barack Obama saying that he wanted to change the National Anthem to "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing." Complete nonsense of course, originating from a satirical newspaper article, and yet they SWEAR that they personally saw the video of it happening. And they used the "flipping channels" excuse as to why they couldn't identify the show or channel they saw it on, or the date it happened.

Molly Ivins made an unsourced accusation about something she claims Limbaugh said on some unspecified date. Anniee451 offers up a specific, dated, transcribed incident from Rush's show, that sounds exactly like what Molly's story could be an adulterated account of.

But you claim you saw it on some vague, unspecified date, and that that trumps what written record there is. That website I linked to makes the same assertion. In fact, it's not uncommon around the web now for people to claim that the Limbaugh incident happened in 1993, and was independent of the dated, transcribed 1992 incident. That, apparently, Limbaugh did a minor variation on the same schtick, had the exact same video 'mistake,'

No one, however, seems to have an actual date of this supposed 1993 incident, or any specific details about it. No one has a transcript of it. No one even acknowledges the oddity of how Rush could have pulled off exactly the same 'video mistake' TWICE without anyone, anywhere, contemporaneously noting it Until Ivins did. If Rush did, in fact, do what Ivins and you claim happened in 1993, repeating the 'mistake' he made only months earlier, wouldn't there be at least ONE contemporaneous mention of it on Usenet?

But guess what you find if you search Usenet postings from those years? You find descriptions of the November 1992 incident cited by Anniee451, and only that incident. And they all acknowledge that Rush immediately apologized on the air. There is not a single mention of Ivins' version of events until after Ivins' version was printed in the Arizona Republic on 10/17/93.

Forget whether or not Limbaugh is a decent guy; I'm not claiming he is or isn't. Just apply the same level of skepticism and demand for sources that you would employ if you were confronted with allegations that Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton had made past offensive remarks that just happen to be unsourced, undated, and untranscribed. Would you demand a source and some specifics, or would you merely accept that the President made the alleged offensive remarks "in 1993"?

'Still, "Saturday Night

'Still, "Saturday Night Live" saw fit to air a sketch that compared Chelsea, then 13, unfavorably with Vice President Gore's daughter. The first lady was furious about that, and even angrier when Rush Limbaugh took this shot: "Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat," said Limbaugh. "Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is also a White House dog?" And he held up a picture of Chelsea.' 16 Candles for Chelsea by Roxanne Roberts Washington Post February 27, 1996 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/inaug/players/che...

Transcripts from Rush Limbaugh TV shows, Nov. 6 and 10, 1992

November 6, 1992, Friday 11:15 AM

LIMBAUGH: David Hinckley of--of the New York Daily News wrote this, and what he has--he's got--it's very strange. He says, In: A cute kid in the White House. Out: Cute dog in the White House.' Could--could we see the cute kid? Let's take a look at--see who is the cute kid in the White House.

(A picture is shown of Millie the dog)

LIMBAUGH: (Voiceover) No, no, no. That's not the kid.

(Picture shown of Chelsea Clinton)

LIMBAUGH: (Voiceover) That's--that's the kid. We're trying to...

(Applause)

LIMBAUGH: No, just kidding. I'm just getting. Oh. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. That was a terrible thing. That--that was an absolutely terrible--I am--I am sorry. You know, I just--the end of the week, the pressure's on--actually the pressure's off, and I relaxed a little bit too much. You know, when my radio show started in August of 1988, a presidential campaign then, and Amy Carter was protesting everything American while at Brown University. And I didn't, of course, like that. I didn't like her protesting everything American, and I made a remark on my show that I've now since apologized for and I've taken it back; I didn't mean it. I said, You know, she may be the most unattractive presidential daughter in the history of the country.'

(Laughter)

LIMBAUGH: Well, there was outrage. No, there was. I mean, there was just plenty--my--my mom called me at home that night. She said, Son, you know, you--if you're going to be serious about this, you can't make fun of the way people look. You're not supposed to--you're not--you can talk about how you disagree with Amy Carter. You can talk about how you disagree with her politics and you think she's doing some bad things, but she can't help the way she looks, and you can't--you shouldn't make fun of that. And, besides, you forgot Margaret Truman.'

(Laughter)

LIMBAUGH: But I--I apologize...

(Applause)

LIMBAUGH: There I go. My friends, I apologize again. I--that's the third time the crew makes a mistake by showing you Millie the dog when I intended to show you Chelsea Clinton, and then I followed with that terrible story. I'm--I hope you'll forgive me. I'm fatigued. I'm tired. I really don't--in fact, you know what I'll do? Let's pretend this is a daytime talk show and that I'm a guest on, say, Sally, Phil or whatever. How can I make amends to you for what I just did? I can spank myself. People who spank themselves, next RUSH. Watch this. (Rush stands)

I'll do it with my left hand. I--I'm right-handed, so it won't hurt as much. Do it with my left hand.

(Rush spanks himself, screaming and crying; written on screen, Ouch!!!')

LIMBAUGH: There.

(Applause)

LIMBAUGH: We'll be back with the rest of our show in a moment.

(Imitates Ross Perot's laugh)

(Applause and cheers)

--------------

RUSH LIMBAUGH November 10, 1992, Tuesday 11:15 AM

LIMBAUGH: My friends, we must apologize for something which happened on this show Friday night.

("Who's Sorry Now" is played and Rush points to himself)

(Laughter)

LIMBAUGH: Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry. Let me tell you very quickly what happened last Friday night. There was a new in list and new out list that was published in the newspaper. The writer said in, cute kid in the White House; out, cute dog in the White House. Could we show the cute dog in the White House who's out, and they put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton back in the crew. And many of you people think that we did it on purpose to make a cheap comment on her appearance. And I'm terribly sorry. I don't--look, that takes no talent whatsoever and I have a lot of talent. I don't need to get laughs by commenting on people's looks, especially a young child who's done nothing wrong. I mean, she can't control the way she looks. And we really--we do not--we do not do that on this kind of show. So put a picture up of her now and so we can square this.

(Photo shown of Bill and Chelsea Clinton, who is making a sour face)

(Laughter and applause)

LIMBAUGH: All right. We're sorry. We didn't intend to hurt her feelings. We'll be back with our final segment right after this. Don't go away.

Limbaugh doesn't deny making the joke

Also, note that in a lengthy response to accusations by FAIR (http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1895), including the claim that Limbaugh had compared Chelsea Clinton to a dog, Limbaugh made no attempt to rebutt that particular claim.
http://www.rtis.com/nat/pol/rush/fair.htm

Can anyone point to a source where Limbaugh denies that he made such a joke?

this reminds me of david

beating a dead horse?

I find him a buffoon as well, but remarking on Limbaugh's assinine antics is almost cliche these days.

solar power home

i think you dont actually listen to rush.

Why is this the stock response?

I am one of those "swing vote" people. I am a registered Independent and I have voted for both Republican and Democratic candidates over the years. I have listened to Rush Limbaugh. He comes on right after one of my favorite talk shows while I am commuting.

I don't understand why the stock response is "You don't actually listen to Rush". The implication seems to be "If you listened, you would agree." I listen to him pretty regularly and I can tell you that I don't agree. His style is manipulative and contrived. His swaggering arrogance, whether real or simply put on for show, is annoying. But most of all, he is cruel. If you disagree with someone, tell me why. Don't just call them names, make fun of their family, their origins, their children and slap labels on them. I have never heard so many meaningless labels in days of listening to other radio talk shows that I hear in twenty minutes of a Rush Limbaugh show.

I have also never been treated to more revisionism than I hear on his show. He was crowing about the imminent defeat of Obama in the elections for six months, guaranteeng that there was no way such a (insert multiple labels here) would ever win an election. Once the election is over it's a complete about-face about the whole issue, as if he never said any of those things. He has the personality of the bragging bully on the sidelines of a football game and about as much relevance to the action happening on the field.

Fortunately, I think the next generation coming up is mostly immune to this kind of manipulation. It looks clownish and irresponsible to them, whether it's coming from the left or the right. What surprises me about the Republican party is that they haven't grasped some of the core reasons that Obama was a more attractive candidate. He spoke reasonably. He responded thoughtfully. To be fair, so did McCain much of of the time. I was seriously considering both candidates until the choice of Sarah Palin as the vice presidential candidate. To me, the middle-of-the-roader, neither a rabid liberal nor a raving conservative, this was where the Republicans lost me.

Sadly, for the Republicans at least, it seems that they are continuing more in this direction over time, thinking it represents the majority of Americans. I don't think it does. I hope it doesn't. I suppose we'll find out in the next election. I'm pretty confident, though, that the average American is in a different place from those who feel so disenfranchised by the election of Obama.

Meanwhile, Rush continues to rant, stirring up emotions but not offering much in real content. If you like to get righteously indignant and you have some sympathy with his point of view, he's a great thing. Look at some of the comments by his defenders on this thread alone:

" YOUR ANTI-CONSERVATIVE comments prove that you and your kind are anti United States of America .."

"Suicide is always an option buddy!"

Is this really what you think will win over anyone who's on the fence? If so, you are sadly mistaken.

No, I have listened to Rush. That's how I know that not only do I not agree with nearly all of what he says, I really resent the way he presents it. He's a public embarrassment.
