Polls and perceived wisdom notwithstanding, Bush keeps winning and Friday's warrantless surveillance act revealed how Bush does it. He's actually smart. He knows the truth. The Democrats, including purported tough guy Jim Webb, can be easily and instantly "masochized." Say the magic words "Soft on Terror" and they happily fold and beg for mercy. Imagine giving totally unchecked e-mail surveillance power, after all, to Alberto Gonzales. ALBERTO GONZALES! Is there anything left to say? I guess nothing except that satire is dead. And it has welts.

Contributing illustrator Steve Brodner also does artwork for The New Yorker and Harper's.
