"Diaper Dave" Vitter Says Obama Adopts Judicial Standards of a "Dictatorship"

But Vitter didn't really come to Tony Cheng's to discuss judges or the Constitution. His talk, entitled "Defending Conservative Principles in the Senate," was mostly a complaint about the economic stimulus bill that his Senate colleagues were poised to pass without his vote or the votes of most Republicans. According to Vitter, his party was having a come-to-Jesus moment over the stimulus package, which had provided the minority party an opportunity to rediscover its mantra of smaller government and lower taxes.

But it was hard not to wonder whether "Diaper Dave" is really the guy to be making the party's case for embracing conservative values. You'll recall that back in 2007, he admitted to calling the prostitute ring run by the infamous DC Madam, the late Deborah Jeanne Palfry. (The ensuing media digging into his alleged patronage of a New Orleans brothel also produced reports suggesting the junior senator had a diaper fetish, hence the nickname.) But the Federalists (including several unemployed Bush administration officials networking for jobs) didn't seem to hold all that against him. They cheered as Vitter hyped his votes against the confirmation of Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder, and Timothy Geithner, and his intention to continue to fight the all-but-done economic stimulus package.
More interesting, Vitter offered up a few specifics about the opposition party's political strategy given its diminished congressional power. Vitter said defeating the stimulus bill was never the goal; changing public opinion about it was. "We may have lost the vote, but we collectively have won the debate," he said, claiming that the public now perceived that the bill as evidence that the Obama administration was not bringing real change to Washington, but rather just engaging in the same old wasteful government spending. (Congressional Democrats have been disseminating polls showing that the stimulus plan is backed by a majority of the public.) "We're getting back to our roots," Vitter said of congressional Republicans.
According to Vitter, the GOP is basically betting the farm that the stimulus package is going to fail, and the party wants Democrats to go down with it. "Our next goal is to make President Obama and liberal Democrats in Congress own it completely," he said. Instead of coming up with serious measures to save the economy, the party intends to devote its time to an "we told you so" agenda that will include GOP-only hearings on the bill's impact in the coming months to highlight the bill's purportedly wasteful elements and shortcomings.
While Vitter seemed to think this was a brilliant new political tactic, voters might be less enthusiastic than Federalist Society members about politicians who spend the next 18 months rooting for the economy to get worse, just to prove a point. But, in Vitter's world, that's the price you apparently have to pay for sticking to your principles, call girls be damned.

True to the example set herein by Diaper Dave, I hear that Republicans are targeting Democrats in 30 states by running ads that argue that voting for the stimulus bill violates the lawmakers’ campaign pledge to restore fiscal responsibility to Washington. If the plan does not succeed (and the economy tanks) then these guys figure that, by running these ads, they’ll look good come the next election. It’s so reassuring to know that they’re more concerned about their own jobs than ours.

Not only is this article tactless and inarticulate--what writer worthy of "credibility" uses the parenthetical?--but also it is utterly devoid of any plausable argument. Vitter and the rest of the GOP may be hoping the stimulus package will fail (and doing what they can to ensure that it will) in the expectation that when it does the people will again turn to them to save us from the destruction that they have wrought. But if the stimulus *does* fail I for one will be sure to point out to all I know that a big part of the reason is the compromises that were made to satisfy the Republicans. Too much to tax cuts and not enough to stimulus.
For example the tax cuts (proposed by my senator) for purchasing a house. It amazes me that although they were willing to provide *some* help to people struggling to pay their mortgages, they insisted on providing even more (in the way of tax credits) to those with the means to, like vultures, swoop in and take advantage of the distressed pricing on foreclosed property.

Mr. Vitter, senator from Louisiana, is apparently unconcerned about financing for repairing the wetlands and levees in his (and my) home state; financing necessary to help prevent another catastrophe. This is understandable, in a way. Since he has ZERO chance of being reelected, he figures he'll bring the state down with him if he can.
It was a fluke he was elected in the first place. The way he got in: too many Democrats were vying for the position when Breaux retired. The state dem leadership did not endorse a specific candidate. Hopefully the LA Dems have learned their lesson and will put up a viable candidate next year, and back him/her to the hilt.

Opposition is one thing, taking a position that is harmful to our country is quite another. The President has been in office for only 3 weeks for gosh sake, Republicans lost big time in the election….The majority voted for what Obama wants to do, and not what McCain wants to do. Republicans were going vote against the stimulus regardless. Their entire goal was to find a reasons to vote against it. They think they need to get back to their roots which they believe is less spending, less government, and more tax cuts. They haven't even stopped to think about what is best for the country. They are losing senate and congressional seats so they are trying to develop a strategy. They just want to get elected or stay in office. This is pure hypocrisy because they never spoke up when Bush was spending and creating new governmental offices. What happens if they do nothing but vocally and boisterously obstruct and the Obama administration is judged as credible.. or god forbid successful? How do you possibly campaign against success when everything you've touched has turned go crap?

It's hard to believe that after the thorough drubbings the Republicans have suffered the last two elections, they continue with the same modus operandi as before these took place. Is no one on the right public relations savvy?
They could have cast themselves as pragmatic, constructive enablers of progress, even as they disagreed with some of the components of Obama's attempt to stop the bleeding. Instead, they've painted themselves as willfully obstructionist, ultra-partisan, self-serving politicians.

While I wouldn't characterize it as a fluke that Vitter won his Senate seat, I don't think we need to worry about him having another six years to root against America. The reason? A porn star is considering running against him. I'm sure when voters have a chance to pick between the senator who wants to screw America or the candidate who says "Let's screw America!" they'll make the right decision.

It is strange that any republican would cry that Obama is not working with them. Obama went to the republicans and even altered the stimulus plan to put some of their failed, tax cut, plans in. Then only to get his hand smacked by them. Also the last eight years these republicans did what they wanted to, even erode our freedoms and use illegal actions. Now they want to cry foul?!!! If I was Obama I would have told all of these idiots to go piss up a rope.

Okay, Vitter's a world class tool, but do we really want to keep going there? I mean, who among us hasn't at least rolled our carts down the diaper isle, long after the kids were wearing underoos? Okay, not as many as I thought, but surely it's time to let the working girls off the hook, let's feel some empathy, and not judge.
