Moore: If There's No Revolution, I Quit

Michael Moore’s new film says "evil" capitalism must be eliminated. Then what?

Thu Oct. 1, 2009 2:00 AM PDT

Michael Moore is at it again. In Fahrenheit 9/11, he took on US foreign policy as brought to us by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. In Sicko, he dissected the health insurance industry. And in his new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story, he challenges the fundamental organizing principle of American society: private enterprise. The film is a series of set pieces examining varying aspects of the economic crisis at hand: foreclosures and evictions, the hyper-casino-ization of Wall Street, the de-industrialization of America (kick-started under President Reagan), privatized prisons for young adults, CEO excesses, "Dead Peasants" insurance, the TARP bailout, the collapse of GM (his favorite corporation), the influence of Big Finance in Washington, and the pitiful low pay for regional airlines pilots. The film climaxes with never-before-seen footage Moore's researchers uncovered of FDR telling the American public in 1944 on the radio that the nation needed a second Bill of Rights that would guarantee Americans the right to a job, to a home, to an education, and to medical care. "Unless there is security here at home, there cannot be lasting peace in the world," Roosevelt says.

Whatever happened to enshrining all those rights? Moore asks. The answer: the wealthy, looking to become more wealthy, blocked this, and took the rest of us for a decades-long ride, during which we paid dearly and they chuckled all the way to the bank—and then chuckled again when our tax dollars were used to bail out their banks. Moore depicts Barack Obama's election as something of a popular rebellion against the blood-sucking elites, without coming to terms with the fact that Obama fully backed the $700 billion TARP bailout that Moore characterizes as outright theft.

The film is loaded with poignant and provocative moments. Whether it's a family being forced out of its house or a pilot who has no choice but to apply for food stamps, Moore finds compelling, on-the-ground tales that illustrate the economic abstractions he assails. But with its wide take, this movie is not as effectively laser-focused as Sicko. Its chief premise, though, is blunt and easy to follow: capitalism is bad beyond salvation. Moore even brings in a series of Catholic priests to back him up on this. WWJD? Certainly not bundle sucker-subprime loans into securities backed by credit default swaps in complicated deals that enriched the moneychangers while eventually causing millions to be thrown out of their homes, often by pawn-of-the-system sheriffs doing the bidding of the monied elites. Also unlike Sicko—which essentially was a call for the United States to adopt a health care system like that of Canada, England or France—this film doesn't end with a compact policy idea. "Capitalism is an evil," Moore narrates, as the film concludes, "and you cannot regulate an evil. You have to eliminate it." Perhaps, but then what? Moore doesn't say.

After a screening in Washington on Tuesday night, Moore told the audience that if people don't rise up and take action after watching this film, that's it—he's done making movies. I can do other things, he remarked. He said this without a smile—which made it seem he wasn't kidding. But what action? Make citizen's arrests of the heads of Citigroup and AIG, as Moore attempts to do in the film? Boycott airlines that pay their pilots diddly? Become squatters in foreclosed McMansions? In response to a question from the audience, Moore did explain that campaign finance reform must be the number one priority. "You have to get the money out of politics," he said. "There is no way for us to compete with Wall Street." He also chastised the White House for endorsing a public option health plan instead of a single-payer insurance program, exclaiming, "you don't start with your compromise." Yet he urged progressives to push Obama, not pile on.

Moore is a talented filmmaker with an eye for the clever gotcha, not a political theorist or a movement leader. So as he raises critical questions about the United States—yeah, why is it that we insist on democracy in government, but not democracy in the workplace?—it may not be fair to expect him to supply the answers. But Moore should be flattered if filmgoers leave the theater disappointed that he hasn't given them a ten-point program of political and economic reform to take home.

As for going soft on Obama, it's clear that this often-acerbic, in-their-face social critic yearns for...yes, hope. At the after-party, I kidded Moore about his light treatment of the Obama administration, which has continued the Bush-Cheney bailout policies he decries. "I'm giving Obama until the start of the NBA season," Moore replied. He paused for a moment: "I mean the real season. Not the pre-season." Note to White House: the first game is October 27.

Hooray, Moore will Quit!

Of course Moore doesn’t state what he thinks should come next, after “evil” capitalism’s demise. Castro or Chavez style Marxism isn’t going to sell here, now or ever, and some form of those tyrant’s system is what the lard-ass loudmouth Moore wants.
Capitalism isn’t perfect, but it is the only economic system that has lifted billions of people out of grinding poverty. India and China are in the process of burying the rotting carcass of socialism, a system which has killed way more people than capitalism ever has, and are reaping huge rewards for their efforts,
We are seeing the worst excesses of capitalism because of Statists, not Capitalists, and President Hosanna is no less a statist that his predecessor, Bush. If the Left deluded themselves into thinking President Messiah was going to bring forth the Workers Paradise, then that’s their problem. As a small business owner, I feel if we wish to curb excessive influence on government by special interests and crony capitalists the only logical action is to downsize government, by at least half. Not continue to make Frankenstein larger and more powerful with each successive administration and then wonder why the villagers are being terrorized.
Obama is trying move move away from the girl that brung him to the dance, which is the socialist left, and he will soon learn the truth about a woman scorned! I figure the impeachment hearings will start about 2011. Moore may get his final wish though;many of us unrepentent capitalists have always believed that if revolution and slaughter erupt in this country it will be delivered by the Left, not the Right.

Children must be taught in

tagged as:

Children must be taught in school early on the realities of politics and money. When my kids (4 and 7) play good guys fighting bad guys, the bad guys sit on the board of corporations poisoning the water my children drink, air they breath, and land they walk on. When he stabs his wooden sword into the air and says "I will defeat you!" instead of referring to a dragon, monster, or evil knight, he says "Take that you corporate bad guy for telling little kids to buy toys that are dangerous, for telling kids to eat food that is bad for them, and treating earth so bad!"

My child is taught..

I teach my child to respect others, study hard and do well in school. To love and respect this great nation we live in that provides more opportunity for its citizens than any other country on this earth. I encourage my son to serve this nation in the armed forces like his father, both grand fathers and his great grand fathers have. I teach him that the "bad guys" are the enemies of this nation, both foreign and domestic ( which includes all the socialist pseudo-intellectual rodents like Michael Moore).

I teach my child to respect

I teach my child to respect others, which includes all the socialist pseudo-intellectual rodents like Michael Moore. ???

Rodney Dangerfield lives on.

I do solenmly swear...

....to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies, both foreign and domestic and to hold true faith and allegiance to the same. Socialists ARE enemies, either foreign or domestic, and Michael Moore is a socialist. He is proteced by the 1st Amendment to say whatever he wants, but any act, overt or covert against the Constitution will make the actor a targetable enemy. So far, Michael Moore is just an annoying loud-mouth with the potential of becoming a targetable enemy

response to "upholding the Constitution"

For your information, one of the biggest enemies domestically this country has ever laid eyes on was George W. Bush who decided he had greater authority to break the laws and the Constitutional rights of citizens than anyone could ever have imagined. Do you really understand what the Constitution provides us? The election which favored Albert Gore was STOLEN by way of our dear own Supreme Court who decided that voters be damned, the election they would decide instead and placed GW in office instead. This began the horrifying injustices that he visited on us all AGAINST what protections we have been given in the same Constitution that you supposedly know so much about. Snooping on private citizens, starting a war on known false pretenses without the authority of the Congress, terrorizing many innocent people from Afghanistan and Iraq among others by waterboarding and other various and sundry forms of torture. Don't even Pretend to tell us about who is bucking the Constitution of the United States. You don't even KNOW what a Socialist is dumbass!

Michael Moore

Michael Moore is a courageous man who has the ability to put forward policies, not views that should be listened too. You are so worried, actually running scared of his so called 'left wing' ideology. Regrettably millions of Americans are paranoid about this aspect of his political strategy. I hope in your suggestion that you are only referring to his being liable to more verbal and written attack as the 'enemy'. Enemy my ass! he is the U.S.A's saviour. Just look at the deplorable non existent health service you have for confirmation. It's OK if you are well off. What about those in your society who are unable to afford efficient heath-care, without the fear of living the rest of their lives up to their eyeballs in debt. Your government spent how many trillions on armaments last year. Better spent on a the the health service.Pathetic.

Outstanding!

tagged as:

Since socialism and socialists are banned by the constitution, then socialism must be illegal and socialists must be criminals.

Outstanding! Arrest the bankers, arrest Congress, arrest Bush, arrest Obama. Jail them. Send them to Guantanamo!

We are living in a society that is socialist for the rich. Our society and economic system screws the middle and lower classes. I am with Moore on this. If Americans are so lazy and ignorant with so little intestinal fortitude and a complete disinterest in doing what is right, then we need to officially define our legal system as Medieval and get down on our knees to worship the wealthy classes, as Congress is currently doing to the insurance industry. Of course, I don't think that worship is the activity in which they are engaging while on their knees.

If we are going to live in a socialist society, which we are, then socialism needs to be extended to all classes of society. Socialism for the elderly? It makes sense, caring for the elderly has been socialized via Medicare. Socialism for the banks? I'm a big supporter of Billionairs for Wealthcare, one can't have too many billions.

So, socialism is only bad when it helps the majority of people, and is only good when it helps the already obscenely wealthy classes? You will see the results. The dollar is in the toilet with little hope of anything but a flush. Oil will likely be de-coupled from the dollar. The value of our toilet paper money is evident in the price of gold as expressed in U.S. Dollars.

You imbeciles have made your bed, now sleep in it. You wanted a rigid class economic structure with tithes and sacrifices to the gods on high, you got it. The results are becoming apparent in the streets of Chicago where kids are dying because there is very little hope for the future for most kids. In the past, social stability was bought by ensuring that lower economic classes didn't grow too large. The idea was to bring enough of the lower classes into the middle class to give hope of economic movement to others in the lower class. The middle class were given just enough hope of becoming wealthy to keep them happy.

Capitalism has changed this, the only purpose and hope for anyone not already a millionaire is as a source of labor, resources, and wealth for those that already are. When that class came asking for socialism, we fell all over ourselves to give it to them. When they asked for that money to come from the lower and middle classes? Of course, isn't that the way it should work? Now, we have people screaming "socialism" when regulations are considered? This is ignorant, stupid, duplicitous, and patently false.

Those of us with international experience will likely bug out again in retirement and take our tax revenues elsewhere. Why would I live here, with the high cost of living created by the requirement to send tithes to the wealthy, when I could live very comfortably with lower taxes, cheaper and better health care, and a generally better standard of living on 1/2 to 1/3 of what it costs to retire here?

I support Moore, I write letters. I'll be taking part in demonstrations. However, compared to the past, very few people have the intestinal fortitude to do what is right. Everyone is afraid of the capitalists finding out about their activities. If their boss knows about pro-American, anti-capitalist activities, people worry about losing their jobs.

The whole system is corrupt, based on greed and the wealth of a very, very few, and is completely hopeless. People MUST stand up and change it. The alternative is far, far more frightening. If it doesn't change now, when it does change, it will highly explosive.

Help educate young Americans

Help educate young Americans considering service in the U.S. military about the misleading marketing, advertising and recruiting strategies of the U.S. Army. Whether through hundreds of millions of dollars spent on NASCAR, drag racing, video games, rodeo sponsorships, NFL commercials, Final Four commercials, or high school football "bowl" games; the end goal of the U.S. Army is to shift the focus for young people about what service in today's U.S. military actually means. And as long as they can keep filling more boots with our young, impressionable youth, they feel no need to fulfill their promises made to currently enlisted and retired soldiers when it comes to mental health care, money for college, length of service, or adherence to global laws of armed conflict. A wooden sword?

Hmmmm . . . . that puts the rest of your remarks in context.

Very nice, how poetic. And

Very nice, how poetic. And since not everyone's children are entrepreneurial geniuses, who would you children work for if it's not for some corporation or it's subsidiary that was started by one?

Look's as if it's time for you to go back to school and learn the ABCs of what makes us the greatest country in the world. That was, of course, until Obama gave it all away at the G-20 summit last week.

apostrophes

You used five of them:

... everyone's children are entrepreneurial geniuses, who would your children work for if it's not for some corporation or it's subsidiary that was started by one?

Look's as if it's time for you to go back to school and learn the ABCs ...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You only got three right. Now, about learning your ABCs...

Possessive pronouns are possessive WITHOUT apostrophes: yours, mine, theirs, ours, its.

Contractions of it is: It's.

Look's is just non-sensical, as it is neither possesive nor a contraction of "look is" which is nonsense itself--

Everyone's is correct, but that appears to be luck.

IOW, your criticisms might be weightier if you had a few of the basics down.

Cheers.

If it isn't perfect....

....then it needs to be improved, right?

I get sick and tired of right-wingers who imply that just because something might be the best thing that's available, it is absolutely perfect the way it is and must never change.

I'd like to see us go back to regulated capitalism. There need to be safeguards to prevent corporations from robbing everybody else blind.

Oh, and it's right-wing astroturf gangs, not left-wingers, who were shouting threats and bringing weapons to the town hall meetings on health care reform. Reminded me of what we learned in history about Germany in the 1930s.

Regulated Capitalism

tagged as:

Unregulated capitalism where financial barons control monetarily the majority of the Member of Congress will destroy this "great nation". Regulated capitalism will benefit the Capitalists and the consumers. A goverment should exist to protect all its citizens. The people that believe in pure capitalism do not have the intelligence to reason or are the point 5 Per Cent of the population who are very wealthy. As Moore says the place to start is Campaign Finance Reform. Moore is not perfect but he means well. Paraphrasing a sixties phrase Moore talks about a revolution but suppose there was a revolution and nobody came. Great Nations are nations where its leaders protect all of the citizens not the corporations that lavish them with excessive cash amounts.

President Messiah?

Presidemt Messiah. I'm so over hearing this epithet from people who don't like Obama.

Bush himself claimed that "god told me to run", a REAL messianic complex, yet not one of his supporters called him "President Messiah".

I'm tired from living in the same country as people like Capitalist. I want a national divorce. Or deportation.

India and China are buying

India and China are buying the rotting carcass of capitalism, not socialism. Socialism means that workers control the circumstances under which they work, collectively own the means of production and that wealth is shared in an egalitarian manner. That doesn't mean it's shared EQUALLY among all who contribute and those who sit on their collective asses. It means you receive a share commensurate to the amount of work you do. This means that people that work should be in favor of socialism and those that sit on their asses should not be in favor of socialism. Also, socialism and capitalism are not mutually exclusive.

If you favor capitalism, it means you favor someone else owning your ass and getting paid more for doing less work than you do.

Under socialism workers are more productive because when the company does well, they do well since the WORKERS are the shareholders. In other words the ones who EARN the wealth collect the wealth. President Obama and 99% of congress benefit from the current system and would resort to arms before converting to socialism. Socialism has a long and vibrant history in this country and is as American as apple pie. If your history textbooks hadn't been edited so badly in the 1950s you might know this.

India and China are buying.

"Under socialism workers are more productive because when the company does well, they do well since the WORKERS are the shareholders. In other words the ones who EARN the wealth collect the wealth."

Bluebeard you need to do a little more research. Please enlighten us all as to which socialist governments or corporations have proven successful!

To those pointing out that India is embracing Capitalism

I think what Michael Moore is talking about is the fact its not really Capitalism thats going on in this country. It's corporatism run amuck where Corporations buy off our Government so they can get laws passed that continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the Citizens.

As for India and China, there is very tight regulation in many areas. Businesses are not free to just fire anyone like they do here. There is also protections built in unlike in the USA. The only issue thats worse than Capitalism in India and China is Corruption which continues to undermine any progress being made.

The difference is that the corruption is at the top levels in the USA while corruption is democratized in India where it occurs at all levels.

Recently there were strikes by the Pilots of Jet Airways and Air India, and both times the Government intervened and gave the Pilots their way. In the USA if there was an intervention it would have been on the side of Big Business.

Capitalism

Of course, we have a misguided conservative here who actually believes that capitalism has "lifted billions of people out of grinding poverty." I'm not saying capitalism hasn't helped a lot of people, but billions? Really?.....

And this idea that socialism is so evil because of what it's done to Indians and Chinese people, look at the effect socialism has had on Canadians, Western Europeans, Australians.

And in response to your claim that "we are seeing the worst excesses of capitalism because of statists, not capitalists." So it's the statists, the people who, according to the definition, gives "a centralized government control over economic planning and policy." Really? So it's the fact that the government did TOO MUCH that caused this financial crisis? Not the greedy, money-hungry Wall Street bankers? Whew, glad we got that cleared up..... But don't worry, if we just leave the corporations alone and LET THE FREE MARKET TAKE ITS COURSE, as conservatives always tell us, things will be fine.

Get a grip, you moron.

Another dumbass in the ring....

Moore SHOULDN'T offer solutions.... he is a Documentary maker, a person who presents information/material for the masses to decide, and he is a DAMN good one at that. In art school, one of the primary things we learned was that if a piece of artwork enrages you or inspires a reaction, then it is an absolute success story. Your "disdain" in response to his work, only reinforces his absolute success. He has mastered an art form. What the hell have you done beyond criticize others who ARE DOING SOMETHING?? People like YOU are exactly the reason America is going down the tubes fast.... you sit on YOUR lame ass, and point fingers of cynicism and contempt, and do absolutely NOTHING beneficial... just gum up the works for the rest of us.

Moore's body of work is one of the rare few who successfully reveal the HEART of our problems.... he creates a platform for real discussion and debate whether you "like" him or you don't. I don't care if he is Quasi Moto or Jaba the Hut..... he has something valuable to say, and actually makes me proud that he has GUTS to reveal major areas of social contention. He is a genius who rose up from very little, and inspired actually CHANGE for the better. He is one of the few making a difference....... The US is currently in its collapse of the Golden Age- clearly capitalism is not the unadulterated success people try to cling to.

Lifted millions out of grinding poverty??

Please spare us the old "lifted millions" bromide. Capitalism demands cheap raw materials and cheap labor. In the last 100 years American Capitalists have exploited people and used up resources here until they couldnt. Then they moved offshore using our military to overthrow elected goverments and install complient dictators.
As long as they kept the bauxite, rubber, oil or bannan's flowing it was all good.

The prosperity here only came after the New Deal and WWII. Now that the "Capitalists" have fought their way back into control, we have a looted economy.
Millions are going to be in grinding poverty for the foreseable future while the
Banksters and Wall Street thieves eat cake.

Clueless Capitalist

Oh my, it seems we have a very confused person here. First of all there are a little over 6 billion people in the world so saying billions have been lifted out of poverty - by Capitalism? - is quite a stretch. Second, I'd say you're a fan of Capitalism but, by definition you barely qualify as a Capitalist. Here's a dictionary definition:
1. A supporter of capitalism. (This is you)
2. An investor of capital in business, especially one having a major financial interest in an important enterprise. (Don't think so)
3. A person of great wealth. (Probably not)
More likely you are probably owned by a Capitalist. Oh wait, you're a small business owner. What ever that means.
You see if you were a real Capitalist you wouldn't be wasting your time here because you'd have to be away from your pile of money for too long.
And the only thing that Capitalism has done for China and India is make rich people here - and in China and India - even richer. And accelerated resource consumption and pollution.
And how do you figure socialism has killed way more people than capitalism? I can't wait to hear your answer.
Bush, a statist? He was an idiot and could never run a successful business without having to be bailed out. I doubt he would even know what a statist was.
As far as President Obama is concerned, we elected him to restore the rule of law which the right seems to think should only apply to a select few. This Messiah delusion you people on the right keep babbling about was of your creation not the left or center.
And again with government growth meme, you are so confused. The right has done more in the last thirty years to grow the government than any on the left.
Starting with Reagan who doubled the national debt and Bush 1 who again nearly double the debt and then Bush 2 whose proud claim is to have driven the debt to nearly $10 trillion. Were you folks just sleeping through this whole debacle?
As for the slaughter you mention, it has already begun and it didn't start on the left. It in fact started with Reagan and his assault on the working people of this Country. They never wanted to be rich they just wanted to be able to support their families but the right just couldn't let that happen.
Now with over a hundred thousand people dying every year for lack of proper health care and a war that was started for no reason the right has quite a jump start on the slaughter.
As many responsible Conservatives who love their Country have pointed out, this emerging right wing of the Republican party has done more to destroy our society than ever before.
What I have noticed personally is that you and your confused friends who embrace entertainers, like Beck and Limbaugh, act less and less like Americans and more and more like little dictators who think they are the only ones who have a right to govern this Country.
No, its clear you on the right are the ones who started the slaughter but as usual we on the left and center will clean up your mess because we do put Country first and not greed.

A few Comments

No doubt this will be an exercise in futility but you are confusing economic systems with political systems. Several governments in Europe have been socialist a few times in the last half century, yet they have robust capitalists: England, Germany, Sweden, and France are obvious examples. There has never been a successful installation of a truly communist government, except, perhaps, for Albania, and that did not last even 50 years.
Downsizing the government will not reduce the influence of special interests and large corporations, that can only be achieved by regulation by the Congress and the Justice Dept.
I have never heard of "statist" or "statism", but if Bush was one, then Obama cannot be one. And if the excesses of capitalism is the fault of "statists" then most of American big capitalists are "statist", since the rapacious greed of capitalists started long ago, or need I remind you of Standard Oil, Carnegie, Hearst, Chase, Morgan, and slave labour in the Americas?
You may dream of Obama's impeachment, but it won't happen. Even though the Republicans proved that an impeachable offense is not needed to impeach a President, they will not gain sufficient power before 2016 to begin impeachment hearings.
You are right about one point, if a revolution does occur in the US it will be led by the Left, for the Right has only once in history led a revolution, when Oliver Cromwell and his roundheads won the English civil war. Even that bloody event could be viewed as Leftish, since it overthrew the monarchy and established a democratic parliamentarian government.

Capitalism

The world is a little more complicated than your ridiculous view advances. There are more alternatives than capitalism vs. communism/marxism. If you're going to pontificate, at least get an education.

socialism v capitalism

The richest standards of living in the world are in Socialist Countries. The AVERAGE income in Norway is $87000/yr. Sweden, Denmark, and others enjoy similar security. The poorest countries in the our hemisphere are capitalist, notably Haiti, Dominican Republic, Guatamala, etc. Socialism works. Monoply capitalism destroys the middle class. American Capitalism is anything but "free market"; it relies on big government contracts, government protection, goverment handouts and the US military to insure it has access to low-cost resources as in the Middle East, and Latin America.

The US is actually a form of "National Socialism" wherein the government backs the big corporations and vice versa, as was with Hitler.

How can you say capitalism

How can you say capitalism lifted billions out of poverty when those that follow capitalism are the first to say no to social programs and safety nets? If you don't have money you head to the back of the bus behind corporate America. I think capitalism can be good, with the right rules and regulations to safe guard those that don't have the access (money) to persuade our lawmakers who clearly don't work for the public.

Ask corporate America what they think of regulations and the first thing out of their mouths is "IT WILL COST YOU JOBS AND LEAVE LESS CHOICES FOR THE CONSUMER" Ask the banks, health industry, car industry ,anti global warming people.I cant tell you how many times i hear that phrase regurgitated.

Pretty sure the cost of not having the right regulation(if any) cost us wayyy more jobs and took away what little choices we did have. Am i the only one sick and tired of watching banks, the health industry and all their lobbyist milk the American people as they buy our only way for making changes, our congress. Blows my mind that even the dumbest most ignorant person in this country is even able see the obvious corruption in our politics. How isn't the revolving door legal bribery and a violation of a conflict of interest. Why is there only a 1 year ban on revolving door jobs but not 10 year or longer?

No Solution

Attempting to propose a solution is always troublesome. Marx's criticism of capitalism was astute and accurate. His solution, on the other hand, was flawed for many of the same reasons. Ultimately a handful of people will always accumlate power, and take actions for their own benefit, to the detriment of everyone else. Thus it has always been, and thus it will always be.

Again, Capitalism as it is

Again, Capitalism as it is currently practiced in our country, which is to buy as much government influence as possible so as to avoid real competition, DOES need improvement. But electing another Statist like Obama, who is committed to making government larger, more intrusive or more powerful, certainly isn’t the answer. And I call him President Messiah due to the fawning affection of the media and the folks who elected him regardless of the fact that he had run practically nothing before his campaign. As a person, from all accounts, he is head and shoulders above the last two occupants, which is fairly faint praise I guess.
The whole view of government has to change if one wants improvement and at this late stage in our empires decline, to avoid financial collapse, and that is to reduce the size and influence of government over the lives of citizens.
And as for leaving the nation as one poster suggests, good luck. Just be careful on the way out so you don’t get run over by those trying to get in!

Smaller Government is NOT the answer

If corporations are buying influence in government, it is usually to keep that government from implementing real regulation or restrictions. Although I agree that the fact that so many of our politiains are, essentally, owned by corporate interests, making government smaller just accomplishes the sames ends for corporations, without the effort or money. In other words, you will be fueling the problem, not solving it. There is no way that any small government can successfully counter the unfair advantages and abuses of mega-corporations. The very idea is simply illogical. How to reduce the influence of money is the problem, and sadly not one for which I have a solution.

The Dream will never

The Dream will never die………….But what if the Federal government held very little influence worth buying? What if the “defense industry” was a third the size it is now, more than adequate for the defense of the US? What if there weren’t 75000 pages of regulations and rules in the Federal Register, most written by lobbyists? What if Barney Frank and Chris Dodd , watchdogs of the corrupt Freddie and Fannie were sitting in jail cells now, next to Charlie Rangel perhaps, or better yet never got the chance to oversee those two pots of corruption, because they never existed?
What if there weren’t unread 1000 page spending bills because government had to live with balanced budget?
What if companies and individuals were free to succeed or fail on their own merits and efforts with the full knowledge that they were ultimately responsible for themselves?

THE REAL ANSWER

AS MUCH AS MOST OF US ARE SICK OF MORE GOVERNMENT, CAPITALISM IS STILL THE BEST OPTION. WE NEED TO REGULATE THE INDUSTRIES THAT HAVE ABUSED THE SYSTEM. WE ARE CLOSER TO A FASIST STATE THAN CAPITALIST RIGHT NOW. MOORE WAS TRYING TO RILE PEOPLE UP MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE.
DENNIS

Capitalist like Capitalism!

Small businessmen love capitalism. Except they somehow don't understand that the rich, big, more sucessful capitalists buy and sell both parties' leadership. Of course Capitalist doesn't want to believe the Republicans are bought and sold by Wall Street, but they are too. And along with buying the parties, they buy the government. Big Capital uses the government to enrich itself. It is a CAPITALIST goverment. The idea that big capital will give up their government is ludicrous. Small capital (sometimes) hates labor and hates poor people. So they hate any beneifts that government gives to workers or poor people. Except those benefits were won to try to keep workers and poor poeople from overthrowing the whole government.

Which is what we will do. And then Little Capitalist can take his stand - with the majority of people, or with the rich.

The problem is corporations

There's nothing wrong with capitalism. The problem is that corporate behavior is inimical to democratic processes. The corporate buzz machine has reduced democracy to mean the mere presence of an electoral process. You can cast a ballot in an election, therefore you're free. Everything else in the Bill of Rights, you're going to have to pay through the nose to get. The more money you have, the freer you'll be.
If we are to have a democracy as planned by the Founding Fathers, we will need to eliminate corporations.

(”The US corporate ruse of, ‘Arbeit macht frei’ as vague postulate and entrée to the equally vague ‘American Dream’–-i.e., a diversion and seduction for an American electorate caught up in wage slavery and personal debt peonage–-has devolved into something akin to a ‘final solution’ for the American worker.”)

Empire: through a glass, darkly

The Illusion of a Free Market

Capitalist really is dreaming, dreaming of the grand illusion of a free market, one where the lowly consumer actually gets a moderate amount of say in what happens. There is not, and never really will be any such thing as a free market outside of economics textbooks. Corporations manipulate markets even more than government, and without government to interfere at all, corporations will just manipulate the markets until we just have one or two that dominate everything, and we will be even more slaves than we are now. Look at what happened to the media market once government removed the control to prevent mega-mergers. Imagine that for everything. To me, that is a nightmare.

In agreement

I agree that the FIRST thing that needs to be done is to regulate campaign finance in order to get rid of crooked politicians, and the SECOND thing is to repeal corporate law in order to make business owners accountable for the actions of their companies. But that still leaves in place the potential for fabulously wealthy individuals to buy government policy. This is true in ANY form of centralized politics, whether it be capitalism, communism, tribalism, or whatever.

The only potential solution is direct democracy, but as philosophers have known for thousands of years, the capacity of that system to work relies on the intellegence of the average citizen, which in many countries, including the US, isn't very good.

The answer is Corporation's

The answer is Corporation's with a constitution. Corporations use to have a stated purpose, now they just say "for any legal business." Like the U.S. Constitution it took some benevolence to happen.

But if we put some of the money and effort we do for charity into starting corporations that are truly owned by the employees with stated high and low pay ranges, service time to ownership ratios, and commitments to society, maybe we might have something.

The commonly quoted saying

The commonly quoted saying goes: "Money is the root of all evil". But the accurate quotation is: "THE LOVE OF money is the root of all evil." The difference explains our disability. Insatiability for wealth and the power which goes with it is an emotional illness. Its like pedophilia, only its socially acceptable (even admirable among certain people). That said, remove this illness from Capitalism and what remains is the most productive and fairest system available (IMHO). That's what should come next. We should acknowledge this widespread human illness and make it socially (even legally) unacceptable. If we blame the money as being the evil, then, we are all victims, including the billionaires (perhaps especially them, since they have so much evil money to contend with). If we blame the love of the money, then we take responsibility for our own actions. That is our available salvation. If we do not correct this self-aggrandized disability, we are all quite screwed.

The "powers that be" will soon become the powers that were.

First time I agree with Trollstein...

Godd point. Michael Moore is a jackass. And frankly I think he's clueless. He honestly must be delusional. Capitalism is not evil, it just is. It's just one of a variety of ways people can exchange thing.

Labels and arguing for agruments sake

tagged as:

People are still throwing out the labels of "Socialism", "Communism" and "Capitalism" like they know what they are talking about. So called socialist Europeans cracking the shits over how evil US capitalism is, while the US rednecks fear 'Communism' more than having a black family living next door. What's true for both is that they will rather disagree with someone solely based on the other persons party affiliation than try and meet mid-way and work out a solution.

It's easy to veto a proposal, but it's much, much harder to come up with a working solution, and with US politicians and media people crying like little girls, throwing the toys out of the pram instead of having a proper conversation, it's going to be a long time until there are any improvements for the people that really matters, the ones without a voice and health care.

Instead of throwing around labels like 'Commie' and 'Socialist', why not just try and come up with a proposal that will make sure as many people as possible can live a decent life? Compassion is neither communist nor capitalist....

MAINTAINING THE STATUS QUA

Americas ruling class plays the old divide and conquer game....keeping the general population fighting among them selves.....a certain ruling class once said..........LET THEM EAT CAKE.....ya all know what happened NEXT....

Reality of matter-in-motion show a better way forward.

What ever happened to the discussion? It seems the question of systems is so boring and alienating, as if capitalism is boring and always unjust. In truth capitalism has been made scientifically knowable by Marx in which he describes the three knowable parts of capitalism as 1) constant capital, the machinery of production, 2) variable capital, the varying working class, and 3) surplus value the third part of capital, which is the amount kept by the capitalist from the socially necessary laborer's added value each and every day of the week, over and above the rate of pay that the capitalist allows the worker for food, clothing and shelter--for a living wage.

In socialism, the workers take over the means of production, and socialize the means of production to the community, and lastly to the capitlaist share holder who gets last claim on the value added per year. First the workers get their claim of the value of socially added necessary labour, then secondly the community gets its share, then the capitalist and shareholders as such. In this sense socialism is a reverse of process from capitalist relations. Workers first, community second, and the capitalist last. That each worker knows the material truth that if everyone works, poverty ends. That ends the boom, bust capitalist cycle which was caused by inequitable distribution of the wealth into fewer and fewer hands. The socialist prospect is rather exciting for the majority which is the workers in each and every country of the world. It is the reason Peoples China is gaining strength, while the capitalist countries are enriching themselves at the public taxpayers expense, while the workers are foreclosed and living in tent cities without genuine medicare. No laughing matter. America needs to reverse the process and bail the working people out, instead of the trillionaire banks and private insurance companies and their militaries, who caused the crisis in the first place. No end of crisis that way.

Means of destruction is not means of production. The militaries of the Imperialist bosses are in fact perpetuating a system in decay, and needing change to enlightened state craft. That is the way forward. There is nothing enlightening about the U.S.A. and its Fort Benning Georgia, promoting Coup-d'-etats, with fourth fleet revisals around Latin America, and seven new Military bases available to U.S. special forces troops in Columbia, not to mention the U.S. Military base in Honduras which the enlightened President Zelaya wanted to cancel, and get out of U.S. sponsored Hegomony throughout the hemisphere by joining ALBA, the Bolivarian alternative. Empire building is a failed practice anyway you look at it, and all empires fall because they persist in doing evil and unjust things. Marx favours the means of production, and socialism because it solves the crisis of capitalism and thereby ends the oppression of permanent wars and pollution, gender discrimination, poverty and unemployment. All Pentagon BS propaganda aside, the path to liberation is flowing as a way forward by dismantling the war machine and its manufactury. It is not other, because the war machine besides being a misery to the living world, does not produce, but it does destroy the living ecological green power balance and does hold pollution in place, which causes another crisis that is capitalist in origin.

Bush failed because he freed the war machine with the publics tax payer money, and lied to and killed the people, plants, and animals, thereby excellerating the discontinuity of the web of life we all need to stay alive. In the commonwealth election, a majority and a correct programme is necessary. Bush had neither and so failed that mission totally. Well then lets admit the truth, that socialism is the next system to capitalism, and does more for the harmony and joy of the living world then polluting captialism and its destructive wars for the few, and misery for the many.. End pollution wars, not permanent wars for more pollution. Viva socialist liberation. Re-tool to wind, tidal, and solar power proven non-pollution solutions---electricity.

Marx described the economy

Marx described the economy in a way that provided the best light for his conclusion(s). He omits the concept of risk. In the more practical world, there are mainly two types of contributions to commerse. a) One's personal time and effort (the workers); b) One's personal investment (the working capitol). As a worker, one runs the risk that the business may fail, or, possibly that one's job becomes at risk through aquisition. One can also be hurt or killed on the job. As an investor, one risks one's capitol investment and this can happen even through monetary inflation--whilst one's capitol is committed and tied down.
The eternal debate comes down to which above category is more in charge and thus, has the stronger entitlement. Obviously, if capitol has no legal limitations, it will squeeze the life out of labor. But the opposite is also true, just less likely to occur because people get old and die while capitol continues to accumulate and gain power. In the end, too much power in the hands of capitol is even bad for capitol because it can't profit while labor is too severely wounded. That is the stage where we are today. But if everyone earns the same amount, there is no facility to absorb the inherent risk factor of investment and everyone equally suffers because the society can't compete with neighboring markets.

insurance limbo

I guess the point michael is trying to make is that you can debate all you want but money is power, and power, in my opinion, in the hands of either capitalism or socialism does not resolve anything. I do not feel that there is a need for a complete overhaul of our health care system. All we need is the sincerity of cutting down profits and making sure that insurance cannot be denied due to pre-existing conditions. There are several ways by which we can cut the cost for doctors. Therefore, reducing the heavy bills. Also, there are many ways that we can insure health care for the part of the population that cannot afford it. But then again, as long as the money is in sight, these changes will not take place. Hence, Michael's opinion of waging war against Wallstreet. We need a culture reform and learn to get to know our neighbours. This money making has made us so selfish and self-centered. But i do believe there is hope!

The fundamental principle of

The fundamental principle of the American economy is NOT free enterprise, it is free money for those who control it. Actually, banksters HATE free enterprise. The problem is, with genuinely free enterprise, businesses become self-sufficient, wages and prices stabilize and nobody needs the banksters. So these dirtbags figured out long ago that, in order to extort money from the system without contributing any useful work, all they had to do is expand and contract the money supply in an endless cycle and if their insider communication was good, they could make vast fortunes on interest in good times or by 'vulture capitalism'; starving businesses and sucking up their assets for pennies when the bust cycle was at it's nadir.

Of course, the constant media brainwashing about the virtues of 'free entrerprise' (free for the mob, that is) was and is part of the plan.

From the land barons to the government sponsored railroad-land-robber barons to slavery to the Goldman-induced Great Depression to the "thanks for the money" mob known as the Fed,. these guys have made the Mafia look like rank amateurs. Sorry folks, but this country is as close to 'free enterprise' as extortion is to songwriting.

Moore is absolutely right

Moore is absolutely right about getting the money out of politics. So long as our elected officials can be bought and paid for by corporate money we will never have a true democracy. Election campaigns should be financed only with public money and the Fairness Doctrine should be reintroduced and strictly enforced. Ownership of media should be regulated and broadcast licenses should be revoked when the Fairness Doctrine is not practiced. Most of the public has already forgotten that broadcasting on public airwaves is supposed to be licensed and not owned. If we never allow the public to hear the truth now and then they will continue to be ignorant and have a stunted thought process.
The spin doctors have led us to believe that there are only to types of economic systems and we must chose between plan A or plan B. Actually there are many types of changes that could be make that lie between these two extremes not to mention other intriguing ideas like Proutism that was first conceived by P. R. Sarkar. In the end the choice will be ours rather than Michael Moore's, therefore it is unjust to criticize him for not being more specific. We have become so accustomed to having MSM tell us how think that we have forgotten how to do it ourselves. I do take issue with Michael Moore for implying that our system is Capitalism. We are actually more like monopolism or some type of Fascism. There is no free wheeling market place. We have few choices as consumers, workers, parents, seekers, or voters. We are living like mindless drones enriching soulless greedy entities. It is worse than Orwell envisioned. Just about anything would be better than what we have.
