Cindy McCain, Gay Marriage Advocate

| Fri Jan. 22, 2010 12:19 PM PST

When I first saw Cindy McCain's striking Prop 8 ad, I assumed it was in favor of the legislation banning gay marriage in California. This is a woman who exudes upper-crust traditionalism. Of course she would be against gay marriage.

So I was shocked when I found out the ad is for gay marriage

I'm not the only one who's surprised. The website for NOH8, the group the ad is for, notes:

In the year since we've started the…campaign, we've often been surprised at some of the different individuals who have approached us showing their support. Few, though, have surprised us more than Cindy McCain.

The decision has partly been chalked up to the influence of Cindy's daughter Meghan, a vocal gay marriage proponent who's stirred up her own controversy this week by agreeing to speak at George Washington University's upcoming "Gay Marriage Equality Week." (This actually isn't the first time Meghan has recruited her mom in the gay rights cause).

In fact, Meghan's influence may be the most telling part of the whole thing. As Stephanie Mencimer reports in the current issue of Mother Jones, the GOP is increasingly coming up against its young contingent of gay marriage supporters. Cindy may well be the product of a larger generational and cultural shift, whether Republicans want to admit it or not.

As the NOH8 website puts it:

Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn’t matter—marriage equality isn’t a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue. It’s about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country.

Are you using this occasion to reflect on other stereotypes and bigotries you may unwittingly hold?

No.

I don't think it's bigotry to assume a conservative will hold conservative beliefs. I'd be equally shocked if Michelle Obama appeared in an ad against gay rights or in a pro-life ad. Who wouldn't?

"I don't think it's bigotry

"I don't think it's bigotry to assume a conservative will hold conservative beliefs."

I'm trying to remember who signed all those Defense of Marriage bills. Or even now, who is arguing in California against Proposition H8. (Ted Olson)

Maybe Nikki, since you have the spare time since you're not reflecting on your stereotypes and bigotries, you can tell me who said this:

"Although B_____ O____ has said that he supports civil unions, he is against gay marriage. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, O____ said, "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."

"This is a woman who exudes

"This is a woman who exudes upper-crust traditionalism"

Really? She's a beer magnate from Phoenix with a Master's degree in Special Education.

Can you explain how she exudes upper-crust traditionalism? Sounds like more stereotyping with a good mixture of lazy reporting and poor research tossed in.

I don't see how it's unfair

I don't see how it's unfair to say a "beer magnate" worth millions of dollars is "upper crust." Or a woman married to a Republican who has consistently expressed conservative views is "traditional."

Anyways, I'm not attacking her. I'm saying her public persona and conservatism makes her support of gay marriage surprising. The very organization she's supporting said they were surprised, so this is hardly a controversial view.

(And for the record, I respect her for the gutsy move.)

I think you throw in phrases

I think you throw in phrases like exudes upper crust and attitudes about how shocked you are to keep you from having to do your actual reporting.

Is it unfair? I didn't say it was. I said I didn't understand what you meant. Give us at least a bone in your claim she exudes upper crust attitudes.

What Cindy did IS gutsy, and good on her, and you would have had a more insightful post

But it ain't that gutsy, not in a world where Cheney comes out for gay marriage and Ted Olson is attacking Proposition 8 in the courts.

So bad on you for being stuck in the 80s and not realizing that with Clinton and Obama against gay marriage and Cheney and Olson for it, it's not really the republican/democrat liberal/conservative split that your handlers insist it is.

But you're too smart to be self-reflective about your own errors.

If you were less smart you might be asking if Meghan and Cindy are for it, what says John? And that might be a story.

Complaints about "lazy"

Complaints about "lazy" reporting from someone who is apparently too "lazy" to change "Anonymous" to *something* (anything at all really) that would enable their posts to stand out from the background noise of the hundreds of "Anonymous" posts smacks just a little bit of hypocrisy. It really must be a bit disconcerting to try to carry on a conversion with someone who hold as many different opinions as "Anonymous" seems to. It not uncommon even to see "Anonymous" arguing with him/her self.

Personally I feel that since "Anonymous" doesn't seem to know what he/she believes, it not worthwhile conversing with them.

Way to dispell the "rabid

Way to dispell the "rabid Republican" stereotype there! Too funny!

Obama

Obama's desire to repeal "Don't ask, don't tell" can actually help to fulfill the "days of Lot" (Luke 17, cf. Gen. 19), the fulfillment of which will hurry up the return of the Heavenly Commander-in-Chief who will make all things straight (pun intended)!
