RE:ACTION

The following article is an updated and revised version of a piece first posted on November 19, 2007. That piece misidentified Freedom's Watch as the sponsor of the focus group described below. We regret the error.

Laura Sonnenmark is a focus group regular. "I've been asked to talk about orange juice, cell phone service, furniture," the Fairfax County, Virginia-based children's book author and Democratic Party volunteer says. But when she was called by a focus group organizer for a prospective assignment earlier this month, she was told the questions this time would be about something "political."

On November 1, she went to the offices of Martin Focus Groups in Alexandria, Virginia, knowing she would be paid $150 for two hours of her time. After joining a half dozen other women in a conference room, she discovered that she had been called in for what seemed an unusual assignment: to help test-market language that could be used to sell military action against Iran to the American public. "The whole basis of the whole thing was, 'we're going to go into Iran and what do we have to do to get you guys to along with it?" says Sonnenmark, 49.

Soon after the leader of the focus group began the discussion, according to Sonnenmark, he directed the conversation toward recent tensions between Iran and the United States. "He was asking questions about [Iranian president Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad going to speak at Columbia University, how terrible it was that he was able to go to Columbia and was invited," Sonnenmark says. "And he used lots of catch phrases, like 'victory' and 'failure is not an option.'"

According to Sonnenmark, two fliers distributed at the focus group session bore the logo and name of Freedom's Watch, a high-powered, well-connected group of hawks. This summer, Freedom's Watch launched a $15 million ad campaign to support the escalation of troops in Iraq. It counts former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer and former deputy assistant to President Bush Bradley A. Blakeman among its leaders.

The first flier handed to the group bearing Freedom's Watch's logo, Sonnenmark recalls, raised questions about Ahmadinejad's recent appearance at Columbia University. The second one was also related to Iran. Sonnenmark assumed Freedom's Watch had arranged for the session.

And the upshot of this focus group? "After two hours, [the leader] asked three final questions," Sonnenmark recalls: "How would you feel if Hillary [Clinton] bombed Iran? How would you feel if George Bush bombed Iran? And how would you feel if Israel bombed Iran?" Sonnenmark says she responded, "It would depend on the circumstances....What is the situation in Iraq? Do we have international support?"

When asked by Mother Jones about this focus group, Freedom's Watch spokesman Matt David responded, "As a general policy we won't comment on our internal strategy." And an employee at Martin Focus Groups who only gave his name as Steve declined to say anything about the session. (In 2003, Steve Weachter, the manager of the firm's Alexandria offices, told a local Virginia newspaper, "We help whoever calls. It could be about cigarette smoking, drinking, whatever. We could even have a group to evaluate Pepsi one day and Coke the next." In the same article Donna Carter, the assistant manager at Martin, recalled the time the outfit was conducting a Republican focus group in one room and a Democratic group in another.)

After an earlier version of this story attributing the focus group to Freedom's Watch was posted, Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, the founder and president of the Israel Project, contacted Mother Jones and said that her group had commissioned the focus group and that it was designed by Public Opinion Strategies, a Republican polling firm. The Israel Project is a nonprofit group that supports Israel and conducts extensive polling on American public attitudes toward Israel and the Middle East. Its board of advisers includes 15 Democratic and Republican members of the House and the Senate, plus actor Ron Silver.

Mizrahi says that her group and Freedom's Watch share a common interest in "thwarting the threat of Islamic extremism" and in "dealing with the threat of Iran." But Freedom's Watch "in no way is directing our work, and it's not funding our work." She pointed out that the Israel Project is not "involved with Iraq," a major concern of Freedom's Watch. But the two outfits, she said, "shared information" produced by this focus group. She insisted the focus group was designed to help the Israel Project promote "our belief in pushing sanctions." She added, "We're working day and night to persuade people the options [concerning Iran] are very limited. We're pushing really aggressively on the economic and diplomatic fronts."

Mizrahi confirmed that Freedom's Watch material was distributed to members of the focus group but insisted that ads from "lots of other groups" were handed out. "We test a lot of messages," she said.

"Of all the focus groups I've ever been to," Sonnenmark wrote in a subsequent email to a group of fellow volunteers for the 2006 Senate campaign of Jim Webb, "I've never seen a moderator who was so persistent in manipulating and leading the participants." (Webb is lead author of a Senate letter warning President Bush not to attack Iran without congressional approval; see here and here.)) The gist of the event was "anti-Iranian," says Sonnenmark.

If the group's organizers were testing the case for military action against Iran—even as a last resort—Sonnenmark believes they could not have been encouraged by the results of this focus group. "I got the general feeling that George Bush didn't have a shot in hell" of winning public support for an Iran attack, she says. Some members of her group suggested that if Hillary Clinton were elected president she might have more credibility in making such a case. As for the possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran, Sonnenmark's impression was that the group's members did not believe it was up to them to judge.

Sonnenmark left the session wondering if foreign policy hawks would soon be pushing publicly for military action against Iran using language that had been tested on her. But, she says, "It is not going to be so easy this time around."

I think this entity should be required to disclose its' finances to an independent third party, and any/all profits should be folded into the budget for the veterans' administration, if they're lobbying for war then they should help pay for the consequences. Pvt. Legstub shouldn't be allowed to suffer because of the harpings of some oil-company-funded political entity.

There is legitimate government policy and then there is the sort of subterfuge which finds special interest groups preparing to market future crimes against humanity to the American public as legitimate public policy. The two simply cannot coexist. This marketing gambit is clearly a Zionist operation. See "Target Iran", Scott Ritter's book which explains the eminences grises behind the future war with Iran. Hint... they all speak Yiddish.

Unlike the invasion of Iraq, Bush may order the attack Iran first and then start lying about it. More legislators need to support Jim Webb's position on this matter. The bottom line is that a significant portion of American's don't trust the Bush administration to engage in any act that is in the best interests of citizens anywhere in the world.

If the American people allow Bush to prove his manhood by attacking Iran, we will deserve whatever consequences befall us and our children!

Zionists, by there very nature, are more likely to shun Yiddish for Hebrew. Beyond that, it is possible to love Israel and hate the current aggression, just as one can love America and loath the current administration.

I've got an idea... Next time we have one of these focus group sessions, let's invite the Chinese. After all, they seem to be Iran's primary petroleum customers... I would be very interested to know how they feel about the U.S. crashing its way into that market...

But in reality whether you want to recognize it or not, these people kill innocent people wholesale. With our consent. It's not a case of propiety, legality or subterfuge. It's groups of people who place power, money, empire, insanity over human life and dignity. I'm not opposing points posted here so far. It's just that they don't go far enough. These people are inhumane and immoral.

As someone who supported the Iraq war when it started, still supports Afgahnistan, and am happy to see the surge as a first step to permanent withdrawal, I assure you I will demand impeachment of anyone stupid enough to support war with Iran. At the time we went in more then 50% of America supported the Iraq war. And though that number is lower today I assure you I will not support an Iranian war. Especially considering Ahmadinjad's party is on the outs with the people and he's up for LEGIT re-election after the US election and he's doing almost as bad in the polls as Bush. People are protesting in Iran demanding impeachment proceedings, his death, and even rioting and burning gas stations to protest his mismanagement of their resources and hurting their standing in the world. If we want to get Ahmadinajad out, we should just secretly fund his opponents election campaign, i'm sure if Bush were running for re-election Ahmadinjad would attempt the same.

If the hardcore "Elders of Zion" conspiracy types really want to do something constructive to fight their mythical enemy, they should sit down and STFU. Because all they do is make it easy to tag any criticism of Israel and the special relationship as anti-semitic bile.

Whoa, guys.... There's a difference between being an anti-semite and anti-Zionist. Just like a person can be anti-Nazi without being anti-German. I personally loath all Judeo-Christian-Islamic sects and their political counterparts on the basis that they are all BASED on war, terror, ignorance, and genocide (Old Testament). That doesn't mean I hate the unfortunate ethnic groups whose members have been dominated by those doctrines over the ages.

Have we become a victim of Israel insecurity among Arabs going back over two thousands year? Have we replaced the Persian protection of Israel with our American might? Have we been an Israeli proxy by invading Iraq? Why Israeli Lobby urging the United States to invade Iran? Israel has about 200 nuclear bombs. Israel is not supporting IAEA; not a member. Iran does not have a single nuclear bomb! Iran is developing a nuclear fuel cycle to make fuel cells for electrical energy production using reactor…just like Japan, Germany and many others. Iran has not attacked any country for the last 250 years… about the age of our country the good old USA. Is this true about Israel? Israel security is linked to stability in the region; Iran is part of this region. Why are we so concern about Iranian potential to develop nuclear bomb some 10 or 15 years from now? How about Israel and her nuclear bombs? We spend our precious tax money to bribe the regional nations by giving them “foreign aids”, please spare me! We arm these nations, all of them. Some of the same arms have been use to kill our people. Except for Iran, not a single American has been killed by Iranian people. Should we spend our money and expertise in our hemisphere rather than 7500 miles from home? Our national interests must be our first imperative. If you would travel in out of places, for example, in Southern Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc. you see population in dire needs, poverty similar to poverty in third world nations. If you would travel to most regions in Mexico, our neighbor to the south, you see abject poverty. Should we spend our national resources in these areas, rather than as bribe money to some ungrateful nations? Charity starts at home, our own USA, then to the nearest neighbor Mexico.

This bunch of mad as hatter Zionists, are engaged in their version of wet dreaming, as ever through lies, and even more lies, trying to bring about yet another war. As ever the Zionists keyboard brigade, will jump on the anti S bandwagon, despite the fact this ordinance is no longer effective in; suppressing the dissenters, and stopping the debate. Fact is any attacks on Iran will kick start the WWIII, akin to the attack on Poland in WWII. This coming war will not be only contained to central Asia, and will rapidly escalate into a full scale nuclear conflict between the actors in the area. Russia on the border, and China only fifty minutes away in an airliner never mind a fighter. Then there is India, and Pakistan. Zionists often brag about the Masada Suicide, a glimpse into the all or bust mind of these dangerous warmongers. Evidently world has to dance to the tune of Israel or there never will be any peace, how about shutting down Israel, and stopping the destruction spree in its tracks?

The JTA has a very interesting response from the leader of the "Israel Project," which commissioned the study: **************************************** The questions, recalled by a focus group participant, were: "How would you feel if Hillary [Clinton] bombed Iran? How would you feel if George Bush bombed Iran? And how would you feel if Israel bombed Iran?" ...Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, the Israel Project's founder, confirmed the polling to JTA. She said its thrust was to test reactions to economic sanctions to isolate the Islamic republic until it ends its suspected nuclear weapons program. "We're trying to push to see how we can get more people engaged in diplomacy," Mizrahi said. *************************************** One can only feel the "economic sanctions" this focus group research can lift are the revenue stifling barriers the lack of carpet bombing is placing on our poor American military contractors. And diplomacy is apparently the rival unilaterally giving up on the very issues to be negotiated. What morons.

Last weekend, I was at Fort Benning for the annual protest of the School of the Americas (SOA) held at the gates this military base. Ironically, there was an effort by the military to drown out the speakers by playing loud recorded military messages. One of the messages declared that the U.S. military remains neutral on all issues. They must consider Focus Groups to be neutral. In addition, these military people state that they are fighting to protect our right to Free Speech. There were 25,000 people from all over the States who joined the Protest to close the SOA. Last year, the House of Repressentatives came within 6 votes of closure. Six nations South of the Border have refused the School's training. The SOA, trainer of terrorists, will soon be part of the horrid history of our nation and thus it should be.

First, slipping in money to influence elections in a foreign country is illegal and undemocratic. It's also unworthy of Americans, who fancy ourselves the beacon of democracy. We'd be mad if other countries did it to us, so it's not OK to do it to them. What do Americans really know about Iran or any of their candidates for office, anyway? Most Americans couldn't even find Iran on a map a few years back and don't even know it snows in Iran (a lot). Second, people in Iran have the same human rights to live as Americans. That's not only international law, but also the official teaching of the official religion of most Americans, which considers Iranians to be children of the same God. If Americans want to be accepted as normal humans in the world it's about time to start talking the talk and walking the walk. I cringe when I hear "anti-war" people putting forth as the strongest reason for not attacking others a self-defensive argument, that is, that if we bomb them they'd fight back and kill some of our own (superior?) kind. Why doesn't the peace movement quote to fellow Americans from their own Prince of Peace?

AIPAC or American Israel Public Affairs Committee is the second most powerful lobby following AARP [1]. Earlier this year House Democrats removed from the War Funds Bill, congressional authorization for an attack on Iran because of AIPAC lobbing [2]. Our Constitution states that only Congress has the authority to declare war [3]. After 9-11 congress handed over its constitutional authority to the president as long as he claims he’s acting against terrorism [4]. Now that Lieberman-Kyl amendment passed declaring the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps terrorist, all the stops are out [5]. Even democratic presidential front runners Clinton & Obama pandered to AIPAC about Iran [6] [7]. Not much is said about Israel’s own nuclear arsenal of over 400 nuclear weapons [8] [9] & submarine based nuclear arms capability [10]. Please write AARP to help stop this war. If we bomb Iran, Iran will shut down the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait is only about 35 miles across its narrowest point & is on the Iranian coast. About 40% of the worlds exported oil flows through The Strait of Hormuz [1]. The oil shortage will cause oil prices to double or triple causing hyperinflation [2]. The dollar is already hitting record lows against Euro & Pounds [3] partly fueled by war deficit spending. China has shielded the U.S. from the inflationary effects of deficit by accumulating 1.4 trillion in currency reserves mostly in U.S. dollars. They own 400 billion in U.S. treasury reserves alone. China already threatened a dollar sell off to counter pressure from the U.S. congress [4]. Attacking Iran would threaten China’s oil deals with that country, likely prompting a Chinese dollar sell off. Japan has almost a trillion dollars in currency reserves, imported 80% of their oil from Persian Gulf in 2006. They will need to start dumping their dollars to replace their oil supply [5] [6]. Bombing Iran will cause hyperinflation, a dollar sell off, a run to gold & the Euro, debt collapse & finally a 1929 type depression. One of the reasons makes the Iran war possible is the uninformed U.S. public, please read below. The Iranian constitution says president Ahmadinejad is almost a figurehead [1], but is perfect for Bush fear mongering. Ahmadinejad won an upset election helped by Bushes “Axis of evil” speech [2]. Like his name implies, the real power in Iran is the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. The Supreme Leader Khamenei issued a fatwa (religious edict) nuclear weapons are not compatible with Islamic law [3]. In 2003 the Supreme Leader, the only Iranian with war powers sent the Bush administration a peace proposal. The Bush administration rejected the proposal & Colin Powell couldn’t sell it. This early this year Condoleezza Rice lied to congress, said she never saw it [4]. In spite of this it appears that Rice along with Gates favors diplomacy over the military action Cheney & now Bush wants [5]. It’s Cheney not Ahmadinejad that’s the threat to peace. The Iranians are allowed under the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty (NPT) enrich uranium for energy to 3.5 % vs. weapons grade 90%. Weapon inspections and the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty in Iran were undermined by the U.S. refusal of any guarantee that the U.S. would not attack Iran. This is similar to weapon inspections in Iraq [6]. Why does Iran need nuclear power when they are awash in oil? Because their oil production rate will peak like the rest of the world in did 2006. This is called “peak oil” or the halfway point of the global oil production combined [7]. Evidence of this is the global oil production leveling off in the past three years & oil prices doubling in less than 4 years. Also there is a mysterious jump in the several of the top “proven” oil reserves in Iran (1986), Iraq (1987), Kuwait (1984) & Saudi Arabia (1988) [8]. The energy future for Iran is nuclear power. In the ‘70s the Ford administration with Cheney & Rumsfield approved Iranian nuclear energy. But like oil future uranium supply is potentially short beyond 2015. An indicator of uranium shortage is its price rocketing up faster than oil. NPT approved 3.5% enrichment gives Iran at least a 30 year supply for 12 reactors [9]. The energy future of the U.S. is geo-political control of the Middle East. That’s why we have good relations with Saudi Arabia (#1 oil reserves) even though they are most of the foreign insurgents in Iraq & 9/11 hijackers [10]. We took over Iraq (#3 liquid oil reserves) & started the pipeline in Afghanistan to the Caspian Sea [11]. All is left is to take over a small oil rich region in Iran (#2 liquid oil reserves) called the Khuzestan. The same Iranian province Saddam tried to conquer in the Iraq-Iran War with U.S. support. We would just have to bulge out Iraqi borders slightly into Iran to control 90% of Iran’s oil [12]. Democratic lawmakers on Friday (11-16-2007) warned the Bush administration was "beating the drums for war" with Iran [1]. They are also concerned that an $88 million request to modify the B-2 for to carry bunker busters is a red flag for bombing Iran [2]. Covert military actions have already started. This includes over flights of Iranian air space with drones & and other more sophisticated, capabilities. The CIA began its program of MEK-executed terror bombings in Iran in June 2005. The MEK is a terrorist Iranian opposition group once run by Saddam. The same pattern of precusor covert military action has happened in Vietnam & Iraq. http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5jCh1C--BuQOFpCJvv76981FjhiEQ http://public.cq.com/docs/cqt/news110-000002611347.html \http://sacramentofordemocracy.org/?q=node/view/3060 http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/18/gardiner-iran/

Okay, Dave, so a non-Jew by the name of Stalin murders millions of Christians and neither Stalin nor the communist ideology which motivates him are to blame. Rather, the Jews are ultimately responsible. Pravda lives!

Love - The Spiritual Path that has no name, number, colour, race, creed, sexuality - just the unique blend of who and what each and every one of us is on this miraculous journey through the life we chose this time, at this moment, in this reality and with this understanding. Music, without it, the Soul feels empty. Touch, without it we are nothing. If we can't touch each other at the Soul level then we are in a desert - lost. Faith, it doesn't have a name but just is, the faith to know I am on the right path.

"Many people have traveled this world with different dreams, purposes and aspirations. Many are masters, teachers, inventors and followers. They were all sent by the creator of the universe to achieve one just course; “global peace and unification.” But this course cannot be achieved without unconditional love, which possesses the magical powers of the Divine for transformation. When the human race embraces love unconditional, then the lost will be found, the naked will be clothed, the hungry will be fed, the bombs will be destroyed and there will be peace and unity which will make us all to speak one language, “LOVE”. Let love abide". -- Philip D. Brown (Nigeria)

We need to bring our troops home and stop any future unconstitutional wars. Our country is going bankrupt because we are trying to maintain an empire with money we don't have. The only presidential candidate that will honesty address these issues is Ron Paul. So far, though, the rest of the republicans and democrats think unconstitutional wars are OK! I'm sick of the deception, the tyranny, and the disrespect for the Constitution and rule of law. Our foreign policy is fatally flawed and inflation is out of control. Thus, the dollar is continuing to be severely devalued, and innocent lives are being lost through wars brought about by deception. Greed! Lies! More lies! Still lying! I'm sick of, and we need SERIOUS change, not some feel good propaganda that will maintain the status quo. I feel that Ron Paul is our best chance at addressing thing ever important issues. The fact that these Groups even exist, under whatever name they go by, is a testament to the fact the our Country is going down fast. The Fascists have taken over and it's all about Money and Control of the People. In a Free society these groups would not exist. The People wouldn't allow it! But there's a surprise coming from the People that will expose the Treason. It's jst a matter of time. Get your jollies while you can.

I do not think that the people here pointing out Israel's crimes are being anti-semitic. No one here is denying that anti-semitism exists, no one is denying the holocaust, but simply pointing out Israel's evils. Quite a separate affair. In fact, denouncing Israel's wrong-doings is showing a love for the people of Israel, Jew and non- Jew alike. Norman Finkelstein wrote a book about how any attack of Israel and it's US- backed state terror is twisted into anti-semitism by the ADL or whomever. It's called BEYOND CHUTZPAH. Also might want to read THE TRANSFER AGREEMENT by Edwin Black (who is Jewish), or any Chomsky (also Jewish)speeches regarding the Middle East, Palestine, and Israel, and esp. his book, THE FATEFUL TRIANGLE. You will see Jewish authors telling the truth about Israel, not hating Jews or the PEOPLE of Israel, but exposing terror and US imperialistic ties with Israel.

Deeper and wider freedom, and genuine independence, nessesitates the dismantling of the war machine and its manufactury. Given that material truth it is rather rude and misleading to be bombing the Holyland to rubble with 'Shock and Awe' militaristic collective punishment, and then pontificating about how upstanding and morally wonderous America is. Jesus never forgave the fascist Imperial Roman enslaving soldiers, only the peoples he had hoped would free them. He realized they too would be killed if they tried, and they had no means of self-defense. Seems the unforgiven bullies have won, thought they are their own worst enemies ( 1,200,000 Iraqis killed since the 2003 invasion) Wake up. It is the liberation side that ends aggressive war as foreign policy. Not the side that uses Might makes right, Unilateralism, and Pre-emptive strikes as the axis powers of Germany and Japan did during the forties of last century. Neo-con America is augmenting aggressive wars with public treasury, funding the military at the expense and impoverishment of the great majority of people, plants, and animals at home and abroad. Impeachment is provided for in the U.S. constitution and in international laws, which are the anti-fascist covenants, so people arise and utilize your national and international laws before the military takes over all law making as Bushco and the Neo-cons are doing in front of your faces. Evil power ruling, concedes nothing to the decieved and oppressed, unless conciously assualted and removed. That is the point of altering of abolishing it, if it no longer serves the needs of the people who elected it. To abolish the government because it has committed high crimes and lied to its citizenry is a right and duty of the people so that rule for, of, and by the people shall not perish from this earth. Why go on lying and making life on the planet miserable. Revolution of the masses against foreign empirebuilders is how the U.S. constitution came to be. That also is the feeling of the Arab masses who abide inside the 'cradle of civilization'. Time is ripe to put in place a peoples anti-war government utilizing all forms of struggle and unity. Workers of the world, unite!!!

If only The People would wake up and at least take the time to consider Ron Paul and his true message of truth, liberty and honest govt., we would not be slaves to this system that we are currently ruled by. We are all being lied to and manipulated. Your children's futures are being robbed. Goddamit, wake up, please. www.RonPaul2008.com
